Once the nausea passed, Demelza went to get up from the floor. Ross extended his hand to help her up and she smacked it away. Ross sighed, "Demelza we need to hash this out, it has continued long enough." Demelza said, "there is nothing to hash out I will not invite the woman back into my life." Ross said, "she is already in our life she is married to my cousin." Demelza said, "a cousin who tried to give her to you so he could get money. Why do you suppose she didn't fight that?" Ross went to answer her but she continued. "Maybe because she wants you back, she has made no secret of that. None of your woman friends do, in fact, they treat me as if I am an interloper. I at least have the support of their husbands if not my own." Demelza started to sway, "Ross reached out to grab her but she shrugged him off and made her way to her room. She shut and locked the door. She was not feeling well at all, Melza and Maggy told her tonight might be draining for her and she should rest. Ross tried to open the door. "Demelza opens this door, we are not done discussing this." Demelza said, "there is nothing else to discuss. I am not willing to compromise on this. I wish I had some old boyfriends who would keep coming around trying to have relations with me.

Ross went downstairs he received scalding looks from Maggy and Melza. Joshua told Ross, "you better hope you don't end up with a boil on your arse. Those two are quite upset with you." Ross laughed, "don't tell me you are starting to suspect they are witches too?" Joshua shrugged his shoulders, "don't tell me you haven't noticed the rain and Elizabeth or the wart on her face. I think Melza said it was her evil coming out." Ross laughed, "coincidence that is all." "Well, if you ask me, it is the truth about the wart, she is evil Demelza and everyone else can see it but you can't, you won't. Not even when she cheated on you with Francis or on you with Francis," Joshua said. Ross shook his head, "so you agree with her?" Joshua said, "in this instant yes I do." Ross grabbed his riding crop and hat setting out for Twenwith to see Francis.

Elizabeth answered the door, she wore a veil over her face to hide the monstrosity that seemed to only get larger as the days went by. Ross bent taking her hand in his and kissed her knuckles. Elizabeth said, "Ross you have to forgive my veil, I need to seek a doctor in London to see about removal, but we have no money so Francis tells me, so this is the only option I have." Ross said, "Elizabeth the blemish does little to distract from your beauty I would not worry about it." Elizabeth sighed, "you say that but if I had this when we were younger you never would have admired me." Ross said, "my dear you are mistaken." Elizabeth turned and placed her hands on Ross's chest. "Ross if that is true, let us run away together we could go to London wherever and get a divorce your father has money. I am sure he would give it to you." Francis chooses that moment to come in, no sampling the goods unless you are ready to obtain them." Ross said, "I was sampling nothing." Francis replied, "It sure seemed as though you were, or was it Elizabeth doing the sampling?" Elizabeth glared at Francis, "I should have married Ross, to begin with, I never really loved you. It has always been Ross." Then she fled the room.

Francis said, "as if she needed to tell me it has always been you." Ross said, "Francis I have a wife I am perfectly happy with." Francis said. "yet you want to strike up a friendship with my wife. How does Demelza feel about that maybe we should switch wives I am sure I can make yours happy and your money can make mine ecstatic? Ross saw red, "Francis I came here to offer you a position if you are not interested then I will take my leave." Francis realized he has pushed his cousin too far, "it was a joke Ross, that is all." Come into father's office. Once they were there and seated Charles came in and sat. He said, "my boy, did Joshua send you to give us some shares back for Grambler?' Ross said, "Uncle there is no way father will be giving any shares to anyone. The mine and property were purchased fairly. Charles burped then said, "there was nothing fair about it, you knew there was copper there. Now I understand there is China Clay." Ross said, "I admit about the China Clay but the copper we had no idea. Anyways we paid the agreed-upon price so there is no need to revisit it. I will mention it to father though, but you would need to have money to pay whatever the share of the expense in finding and the cost to mine it." Francis said, "with what we have nothing." Ross said, "what of the money you got for the mine." "Warleggan's took the biggest share of that for Twenwith. Elizabeth had spent the rest within days," Charles said, "you know what that woman is like."
