Ross and Demelza hardly slept the night before, Demelza was sore, and Ross asked if a tub with hot water could be brought up for his wife. The older lady looked at the water then Demelza saying, "hot water is not good for the bairn." Demelza laughed. "We have only been married two days; it is a little too early to say I am with child."

Ross was down ordering breakfast for Demelza and himself, so he didn't hear the exchange. The lady put her hand on Demelza stomach and said, "Aye you be with child. Early yet but there be a babe in there." Demelza felt queer when she touched her, "are you a witch," Demelza questioned? She said, "nay lass, but I am an empath. I feel other people's feelings."

She helped Demelza in the tub, "who is beating and burning ye girl?" She said, "my father.my mother was given to him by my grandmother, he resented her and me for being a girl. My mother died not yet a year!" The maid looked sad, "your grandmother?" Demelza said, "we have no idea she just took off once she was free of my mother."

Demelza wondered if this lady had any friends like Maggy Dass. She told the maid, "I had a friend her name was Maggy Dass, she helped me give me father back his own one time. She told me how to make a potion that made him sick and gave him stones he had to pass through his urine." The old lady chuckled," sounds like Maggy." Demelza said, "you know her." The maid said, "aye, she must have thought highly of you to tell her secrets." Demelza said, "she was always very kind to me." The maid said, "we know our kind and are happy to help them along their journey. Tell me you have a gift of flowers; you also have feelings and the need to help others? You are double gifted." "Oh" said Demelza, "I have no gifts." The older lady laughed, "aye you do, but you must believe in yourself and use them for good!" She helped Demelza wash her hair and said, "I best be on my way since I have other customers." Demelza said, "what is your name?" "Melza East, she replied" Demelza smiled, "My brothers call me Melza" The maid nodded and said. "don't worry about your children, some will also have gifts." The maid went down and observed Ross, he tended to be moody and could be reckless at times, but her Great Granddaughter could manage him once she took care of that homewrecking wench. She thought that daughter of hers had much to answer for she lost her gifts by being selfish and evil. Seems it did not teach her a lesson. Ross went up to the room he had the strangest feeling he was being watched; he entered the room where Demelza was still in the tub. He said, "I have half a mind to join you, but we need to make some stops, before we head out." Demelza went to get out of the tub, but Ross was at her side lifting her out with a bath blanket. He wrapped her in it and said, "come and eat." She said, "Ross it ain't proper me sitting with nothing on but a towel." Ross said, "not proper for who?
