Twenwith Wedding

Elizabeth came to meet Joshua and Ross, Dwight, Demelza was positioned behind them. She told Ross that girl does not know how to dress. Her dress is completely inappropriate. Joshua said "I'll let Mistress Treeloes know, since she is the one that picked this gown out saying it was the height of fashion and it was very appropriate for a wedding. What is the matter Elizabeth jealous"?  Elizabeth then looked at Demelza and said "what was the rude sound during my vows?" Demelza sneered at her and said "only you should say what you intend to abide by.  It cheapens the vows that people who have every intent of obeying them. So, in affect you cheapen marriage!"
Ross grabbed her arm and started dragging her out when Joshua and Dwight stepped in. Joshua said "Ross May I speak to you? Dwight, please continue in with Demelza. Elizabeth, I warn you about making any more of a scene." Ross followed his father to uncle's office. Joshua turned on him! "That girl is in love with you, but you have your head so far up your ass that you can't see the forest for the trees. Nothing Demelza has said is a lie. Elizabeth, I have no doubt told you that the two of you can have a relationship even though she is married to your cousin. I have sat back and listen to you calling her a miners brat, or a kitchen maid but no more. You play hot and cold. I want you happy and though I love you, it is time someone looks out for her well-being. I don't want you interfering with any men wanting to spend time with her, if she can find someone to replace you in her affection then so be it!" With that Joshua walked out of the office. Ross was sitting on the other side of the doorway. when he heard, Elizabeth, Margaret and Ruth, talking about Demelza, of how they needed to put her in her place. Ross came around the corner and said "any attempt of hurting Demelza will be held in the upmost contempt." He then walked out to where the dancing was. He saw Dwight dancing with Demelza. He was going to ask for the next when George Warleggan came upon her, then he was dancing with her. It seemed she had a full dance card. Verity touched his arm and said "she is a hit; she hasn't stopped for more than a drink."
Dwight came up to him next and spoke. "You can't have them both? It is one or the other and if you can't give up Elizabeth, then let someone else pursue Demelza. She deserves to be happy." Ross made a determined move to dance with Demelza when he saw George approaching her again.  Then he was intercepted by Elizabeth, and she is pulling him to dance.
When the song ended, Demelza decided she was going to go home, they were to stay at Twenwith, but she didn't want to be under the same roof as Elizabeth. She prayed asking for forgiveness she didn't like herself, it went against her nature to dislike someone, was she turning into her father. She didn't want to hurt or hate anyone it seemed that was what she was turning into,  a hurtful person, and she didn't like herself. She heard a noise behind her but kept on walking. Once she got to the church she went into the church and contemplated what was to be done. She was sitting there for fifteen minutes thinking when someone came in behind her. He said, "it is getting late do you not think we should go home". "Ross, I know you consider me a miners brat and a kitchen maid, but I can't do this anymore". Ross said, "what can't you do anymore Demelza." "I can't watch you be made a fool of, I can't stand by and watch the man that owns my heart to waste his life. I know you could never feel the same. I am not but a miner's daughter and if your mother wasn't the closest thing to a sister to my mother, I would not be here now. I told Mister Joshua that I am going to go home to Illugon." Rose interrupted and said "NO!" "Ross I cannot stand this pain, watching you throw your life away!" She got up and Ross grabbed her and kissed her. Her body melted to his. Ross said, "I can't do this you are a child". She said, "I have seen more and lived more than some twice my age".
She turned to leave again when Ross said "we can take it slow, it is not legal to marry without you parent or guardian until you eighteen. If you will allow me, I would like to court you! Get to know each other spend time. Of course, I will have to ask your guardian"  he smirked.
Demelza couldn't believe what he was saying he wanted to see if they could work together.  She nodded her head and he said "let's go home." They took the beach path walking hand and hand.
Demelza decided she needed to know what Ross's feelings for Elizabeth were, so she asked him! Taken aback he said "she was my first love she got me through the roughest part of the war. I find it hard to give up the image I have of her"! Demelza nodded she thought isn't that the opposite of what he just said we would do. It sounds as though he is going to string me along until my eighteenth birthday and then Uncle Joshua will pick a husband for me. There was something about the way Ross was wanting to do this, was he waiting to see if Francis would kick her out! She knew that Joshua had money and they could probably pay to get someone to grant them a divorce. She thought you are just being silly.
They got home and Ross kissed her forehead good night and she went to bed and dreamed of Ross Poldark. The next afternoon she was sitting in the garden, and she heard Joshua and Ross talking. Ross said "I think I've solved our problem." Joshua said "what problem?" "The infatuation that Demelza has on me! I told her last night I would court her until her eighteenth birthday and then we would know if we were compatible. By that time, she is eighteen she will see we would never work!"
Joshua saw her first and said "Demelza" before her name was out of his lips she was on her way to the barn. She had her horse saddled and was getting on it by the time Ross made it to her. He said, "I didn't mean it like it sounded!" She said, "oh no, I didn't mean it like it felt!" She got on her horse and went to the Gatehouse. Dwight saw she was upset and told her to come in. She asked him "do you need a cook and housekeeper"? Dwight said "Yes". Demelza said "I want the job at least until I have enough money to get away from here!" Dwight knew this had something to do with Ross and asked her to tell him what happened? She told him everything that transpired between them last night and what she overheard this morning. She asked when she could start, and he said "tomorrow." She said she would be there.
She got on her horse and rode to the beach to sit awhile they could make their own meals. Ross saw her and was making his way down when she got on her horse and rode down the beach where the horse would have an easier time climbing. Ross was beating himself up for not making sure she wasn't in listening distance. She got back to Nampara and went to her room she put a couple of work clothes in a sheet with some underwear and work shoes. She wouldn't take anything more then she had. Joshua knocked on the door. He came in and saw her putting things together and ask her what she was doing. She said "What I should have done before I believed that you or your son were good men! You're like the rest of them say whatever just to get what you want and the hell with anyone else!" Joshua said "Demelza enough of this where are you going, I got a housekeeper position, so you and your son won't have to worry about telling me lies because I won't be your concern." Joshoa said, "you won't be leaving here, I promised your Mam." She said "yes and I made a promise to and I intent to fulfill it. I want to go to sleep so if you could leave I would be eternally grateful."
Ross got home a short while later he had half a bottle of whisky before Joshua came in. Ross said "what happen?" Joshua said, "she said she is leaving tomorrow; she got a job." "I'll sleep in front of her door if that is what it takes to keep her here." Ross said. Demelza knew telling Joshua she was leaving in the morning would allow her to sleep in Jim's old place then she could saddle Mollie and leave before they had their clothes on!
Demelza locked her door and then climbed out her window. She went to the root cellar and got some apples and other editables stored there. She had everything ready to go. The next morning was foggy, and you couldn't see two feet in front of you, but Demelza knew she had to leave that morning. Jim came in and asked her what she was up to. She said "Jim can you go and bring Jenny out here please and don't mention yet that I am here." A few minutes later Jim and Jenny reappeared and Demelza told her "I want to tell you both goodbye and I hope that when you think of me, you have good thoughts!" Jim said "what is going on." She told them the short version. Of what happened the day before and said "I can't live on the precipice of servant or lady they were pulling me apart." The She didn't tell them about what she heard Ross and Josh say about tricking her until she was eighteen.
Once saying goodbye, she got on her horse and rode out of Nampara thinking she would never be so gullible again. Jenny went running into the house seeing Ross sitting on the Chair outside Demelza's room; she said "she isn't in there." Ross got up and said "yes she is her door is locked." They heard thundering footsteps coming down from upstairs. Joshua said "who was on the horse that just left?"  Jenny said "the Mistress she said she was going to work for the surgeon, but it was too close, so she is going to look for employment elsewhere."
Ross had thrown his boots on and swore when he went outside there was no way he would be able to track her with the fog. He hoped she stayed away from the cliffs because one could easily go over not knowing where the edge was! Demelza cut through the woods and reached Swale church she went to her aunt's tombstone and told her she was sorry but after how they tried to trick her, she couldn't stay. She kissed her fingers and laid them on the tombstone and then got on her horse and rode through the woods. She came across and old abandoned house that looked like no one had been in a very long time. When the fog started to burn off, she went and looked around. She saw something come through the trees she hid the horse and herself in a thicket and then she saw Garrick had followed her.  She hugged him and sobbed she wouldn't be alone after all. There was a clean stream in behind the house, plenty of wood, and plenty of berries even wild apple and lemon trees. The area itself she noticed was deep in the woods. She set to cleaning the shack. She brought in clean straw left over in a field she found. She decided she couldn't risk a fire during the day but maybe a small one at night. Garrick brought her a rabbit and Demelza realized he knew she was hungry, he and she were a team.
Before she knew it night had descended, while cleaning she found some buckets and took them to the stream and filled them so she could cook rabbit stew and make some lemon water. She also heated water so she could wash.
