5 YEARS LATER
"Mama, Its daddy on the T.V." Jeremiah screamed from the living room. I ran out of the kitchen, flour patches all over my clothes and face. China and I had been trying to make cupcakes all day. The batch in the oven was our second attempt after the first batch came out burnt.
"See mama, its him" Jeremiah said pointing at T.V;
"World renowned plastic surgeon Jeremy Caine seen leaving the Ritz Carlton after a very heated argument between him and his wife Lily Elswood was caught on camera. It is being reported that they are heading to divorce town"
The reporter continued but I zoned out as Jeremiah watched adoringly as they continued flashing pictures of Jeremy on the television screen. Almost five years ago I had my twins, a boy and a girl. I named my girl China Nandi Caine and my boy Jeremiah Nathi Caine. They had never met their father but had known him for as long as they could remember. I made it a point to tell them about him every chance I got. Many said it would confuse them but I didn't care. I knew from the beginning I would tell them who their father was. Jeremiah and China were set to turn a year older in a few weeks. Jeremiah was head strong and always liked to be in control. Which meant throwing a lot of tantrums. He was also the smartest little boy I knew. He exceled tremendously in school. Jeremiah was also the splitting image of Jeremy; same eyes, the freckles on his tiny nose lips, the dimples that dug into his cheeks even when he was not straining his cheek muscles and then a head full of brown curls just like his father. His hair was shoulder length and he loved his hair. I remember trying to have it cut at the barbers shop and was unsuccessful because he refused to sit still. China on the other hand was the exact opposite of Jeremiah. My sweet girl was shy and would always hide behind me or her brother in large crowds. Like Jeremiah she too resembled her father. It was almost as if I had nothing to do with creating them.
"Mama, maybe daddy can come to our birthday this time" China said staring up at me with sporting her infamous puppy dog eyes.
"Good idea China" Jeremiah quipped without taking his eyes off the television.
"Oh pumpkin, daddy is really busy with work but he loves you dearly. As soon as they let him off work he will come and visit and bring all the toys you want, " I said squatting to China's level and dusted the flour from her hair.
"Its ok China, I'll be the daddy till he comes and gets us" Jeremiah said finally peeling his eyes off the screen.
"Yuck you're a baby" She said scrunching her tiny nose up.
"No I'm not, I'm almost five years old, that's a big age" Jeremiah argued
"Alright alright that's enough, China go check on the cupcakes and Jeremiah that's enough TV for the day, go and finish your homework" I said grabbing the remote and turning the TV off.
"No please mama Julianna Rancic said tune in for more" He said jumping up and down then crying
" Did you just say no to me" I said hiding my amusement and feigning anger
" No ma'am" He grabbed his backpack and pouted walking slowly to the dining room.
"If you don't finish your work you wont be joining us at Papa's house later tonight" I said causing him to walk a little faster. I went back into the kitchen, China was on my phone laughing totally oblivious to me standing behind her.
"Who are you talking to little lady" I said startling her causing her to fall off the low chair she sat on
"Oh my baby" I cooed picking her up and cuddling her while she cried. I also picked the phone up seeing Kravitz face plastered on FaceTime ; I placed the phone on the table and continued to console China
