CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN....
TAZEEMA'S POV
Jeremy told me very little about our mini get away, only that the jet will be taking us to Cape town at noon. I had my things packed up and ready for the day but I had some last minute errands to run before take off. I was on my last errand for the day which was grocery shopping for the twins essentials.
"Gugu" someone said from behind me as I pushed the shopping cart around the mini mart. I turned and my jaw dropped when I saw who it was.
"Mami" I said staring at my mother who had lost even more weight since the last time I saw her. She had on a tattered T-shirt and some bleach stained black sweat pants. Her once lovely long hair was now shaved in a patchy low cut. I quickly left my cart in the middle of the aisle and walked towards her, grabbed her by the arm and pulled her out of the mart. She struggled out of my grasp once we got outside.
"Get in the car Mami" I screamed and she looked around the parking lot before nodding and getting in the passenger seat while I got in the driver seat.
"I knew it was you just from your hair, you look good Gugu" She said slurring her words and smiling revealing her two chipped front teeth. Another surprising new discovery to me.
"Mami, what happened to you? you were doing much better" I said turning towards her in the car and crying
"Gugu I am better, I feel great" She said laughing and leaning back into the passenger seat.
"You are not ok Mami, please let me help you" I said reaching my arm to her side and grabbing her tiny arms. She looked at me stunned
"I cant leave now, he will find me" She said and it was the first thing she said that I believed
"Who will find you" I said crying
"I am sorry Tazeema"
"I know, just let me drive you to the rehab center" I said and shook her head profusely
" I cant let you do that, just give me some cash and I will be out of your hair Gugu"
"Mami please I beg you, let me help you. Why wont you let me help you for once Mami help me help you" I yelled tears pouring from my eyes
"I don't need your help Gugu. Why are you always trying to save people. Sometimes you need to back off and let me live my life. I am the grown up, I am your mother, If you wont give me the money then let me fucking get out of your fancy new car" She said reaching out and grab the door handle but I stopped her. I grabbed my wallet and gave her all the cash I had in it. She took the money and opened the passenger door and literally jumped out laughing
"I love you Mami, and I will always be there for you. Remember that for me please" I said wiping my tears and she smiled.
"I will always love you more than you know Gugu" She said then slammed my door shut before walking away while I sat in my car crying.
Once I returned home, I told Jeremy about the events of that morning needing to find solace. He knew all the right things to say to comfort me. I didn't tell my father because I knew how much he and Lena suffered trying to help my mother over the past couple of years. My mom was in and out of rehab and my father paid for it each time without complaining. Before this clear relapse my mother had been sober for two years and was finally doing well. A few months before I left for Kravitz wedding, I stopped seeing and hearing from her less and less and I knew something was up. I went to see her then fearful of what I might find out and she practically banished me from her house.
