It was Sunday Funday and China had invited Kravitz and I to a new brunch spot she'd heard about. I threw on a quick outfit, a mustard yellow sundress with some sandals and minimal makeup. I had my natural hair in its usual wash and go state. Kravtiz and Chace moved to their new apartment a week ago so I had the house to myself for a few weeks before I decided to downsize to a smaller apartment once my lease was up; rather than find a new roommate.
I arrived at the restaurant and it seemed pretty busy, Good thing China booked us reservations ahead of time. The hostess escorted me to our table upstairs and informed me that my party had already arrived.
"Tazeenina" I heard someone yell. I turned to find out who it was. Just my luck it was Trisha. She stood waving me over to a table with about 6 women, one of whom was Lily.
"Shit" I mumbled causing the hostess to laugh.
"Sorry, I'll find you when I'm ready " I said and she nodded and walked away. I did a quick prayer, then turned around plastering a fake ass smile on my face then proceeded to the table.
"Hi there" I said awkwardly looking around at the table filled with women. Everyone replied except Lily who was busy scrolling through her phone.
"You ladies look lovely this afternoon" I said politely
"Wish we could say the same" Lily mumbled still looking at her phone causing the lady beside her to giggle. Trisha shot her a look and she immediately shut up. Alright now I'll let that slide I thought to my self.
"Ladies this is Tazeenina, one of the employees at the hospital, she is al....." Trisha said introducing me but was cut off politely by yours truly.
"Ahh thanks Patricia, its actually Tazeema ladies and I am a charge nurse for the cardiovascular as well as the plastic surgery department at Caine Elswood Memorial Hospital " Lily looked up from her phone and table
"I remember you, You're the nurse my fiancé keeps raving about, says you are his star pupil." I swallowed hard but smiled it away
"I like what you've done with your hair, kind of gives my an insight of how mine and Jerrys swirl babies will look" She said causing the table filled with women to erupt in "aww's" and "ooohh's". All I was thinking was, no she didn't.
"Not till after the wedding and honeymoon of course" She said dramatically batting her eyelids and on que her minions "awwed" and "ooohed". I needed to leave this circus show right now.
"Well it was nice meeting you all but I have some friends waiting, have a nice meal ladies" I said not waiting for a reply and turning on my heels to find the hostess from earlier.
"Finally" Kravitz huffed rolling her eyes dramatically as the waitress ushered me in.
"Don't roll them too hard it might get stuck that way" I said hugging her and making my way to China who smiled adoringly and welcomed my embrace.
"What took you so long biscuit" China said as I made my self comfortable in my seat.
"Oh nothing just running into Lily Elswood downstairs" I said casually eyeing Kravitz who looked up at me from the menu wide eyed. I almost busted out laughing because I knew with that I had been forgiven. She dropped the menu and dramatically gave me the look to continue.
"Yeah she was having a tea party with her bridesmaids" I said
"Well at least that chapter is closed" China said picking up the menu. The table got really quiet, and China slowly looked up from the menu and right at Kravitz who grabbed a muffin from the basket on the table and literally shoved it in her mouth. Fucking Kravitz, for heavens sake we nicknamed her "CNN" for a reason. When Kravitz is quiet, something is wrong. China switched her gaze to me and I shrugged.
"No way biscuit, not again, He's married for goodness sake" China said dropping the menu
"He's engaged" Kravitz said finally breaking her silence. I turned to her and rolled my eyes and she immediately grabbed another muffin and looked down at her hands.
"Same shit, he is in a committed relationship. Why would you choose to be a home wrecker" She said. I gasped causing her facial features to soften.
"Its more complicated than that. I know you're going through some things right now China but it does not warrant you talking to me like I'm a child. I know you well enough to know that you are simply deflecting and that your anger right now has nothing to do with my predicament with Jeremy. I am not the whore Joey cheated on you with" I said rising from my seat, grabbing my stuff and leaving. Thankfully Lilly and her posse had left so I walked right out of the restaurant and into the surprisingly cool breeze of the afternoon. I stood outside wishing I had a cigarette to calm my self but I gave up smoking 3 years ago. I'd still fight for one at this moment.
"Cigarette" I turned to see China offering me one. I took it from her and leaned towards her so she could light it. Two puffs and I felt slightly ok so I tossed the remaining on the floor and stepped on it.
"I know China, I know I'm in the wrong. I know how it looks but he's not happy. I know he's not. He says he'll do it, that he'll leave and I just know he will, China what I'm I doing, This is not me. I would never " I said crying, China pulled me into a hug.
" I know biscuit. You are probably right about him, and if that's the case this man has a lot that he needs to figure out on his own. If he's serious about what you two have then nothing can stop him. You need to think about you and your heart. Be prepared for what's to come, living with him or without him. Either way you need to know now. He needs to choose now" China kissed the top of my head and pulled me at arms length
"You deserve better, think about it. Now lets not let this spoil the day. Kravitz is probably about to order another batch of muffins waiting on us" She said causing me to laugh. I dabbed my tear stricken face with the back of my hand and we made our way back into the restaurant.
"Thank heavens, I was gonna give you guys another five minutes and I would ordered and eaten without you, by the way I don't think I like muffins anymore" Kravitz said picking up the menu. Just like China said, she really did get another muffin basket.
Monday rolled in and I walked into work on a mission. I had made up my mind to end what Jeremy and I had. I had avoided both Jeremy and Travis over the weekend. China's advise like a broken record played continuously in my head. I did deserve better.
"Tazeema, Sherell will like to see you in her office now" Trisha quipped as I walked into the building. I continued walking not bothering to glance at her. I reached Sherell office and knocked gently then paused waiting for a reply.
"Yes come in" She replied
" You asked for me" I said peeking in, she nodded pointing at the chair in front of her desk. I shut the door and took a seat.
"As you know on Friday last week we did a random drug test and now the results have returned" I nodded while anxiously wondering where the conversation was going.
"Tazeema you are pregnant"
