17 - The Aopai

"We're back." Y/n announces to her group as they reach the commission board." And it is exactly 9 so the others should be on their way at least."

The peppy voice called over from Eda's team who was approaching. "Willow! Y/n! Look at this fish thing we caught!" Luz exclaimed and ran over to Y/n's group, holding a slimy octopus like creature. It had a ball shape for a body and little arms sticking out from all ends, and eyes that kinda had no muscles to look anywhere. It was a nauseating, dull, green color.

"That is disgusting." Y/n churned her face in disgust. "Name it Larry."

Luz squished the thing that she had rubber gloves on to hold, against her face as if to cuddle it, but a red, rashy texture formed on her cheek rapidly. "Luz! How many times do I have to pry that thing away from you! It's gonna end up melting your face off!" Amity yelled and pulled the creature away from her with a glove on and Eda splashed Luz's face with a potion. The rash went away immediately and Amity began to walk away. "I'm gonna take this to whoever asked for it. Luz, stay here." She demanded, knowing full well she would just grab it from her before she handed Larry off.

Amity left and Eda took a seat. "Where are the other two?" She asks.

"Probably on their way, they could still be in the middle of a task too, I won't rush them. We aren't in a hurr-"

"Y/NNNNNN." Y/n was cut off by a thundering boom of a voice, shouting her name. The voice was raspy but also deep and strong and sounded like it was being yelled into an old microphone. "Who?"

A shadow like mist emerged from the forest against the town and presented itself in the sky. "Y/NNNNN."

"WHAT THE HECK IS THAT!" Willow and Luz muttered in fear and Koda latched onto her hand.

"How does it know your name!?" Eda asked and stood up.

"Do you know what it is?" Y/n asks with her hand in front of Koda to keep him behind her.

"I sure do. Its an Aopai, and if it's saying your name, you should probably run."

"Maybe they mean a different Y/n?"

It came down to ground level and went face to face with her. "Y/NNNNN!"

"I think it means you!" Willow shivered with fear. "Run Y/n!"

"That bird thing really got me. I feel like my dad by rolling my shoulder so much." Gus says as he did arm circles to relieve his shoulder pain after a large vulture-like creature tossed him in the air by the arm. He's lucky it didn't dislocate or break. "That was our last one, right? It looks like it's getting dark."

"Yeah, we'll get back and the rest of you can go home. Me and Y/n have to go to the nigh-" He froze as a gust blew some black particles in front of him and his blood ran cold. Hunter looked to his right to see an Aopai and he has never been more scared.

Gus was pretty intimidated but never seen one before so didn't know the potential severity of the situation. "What is that?" He asked but Hunter stayed silent.

He concentrated intensely the longer the Aopai stared at him, his brain panicking. "Don't! Think of anything else! Anything! Books! Ice cream! Lake! Fish! Fuck, dude, no!" But he was helpless and despite how much he demanded his brain to keep his mind off the one thing, he couldn't. If he was scared for her life how could he think of ice cream over her. Though he did tried. "Ice cream ice cream ice cream." No use. "Don't think of Y/n."

The Aopai seemed to smile, despite having no surface to have a face and flew off in the direction towards town. "No! Dammit!" He sprinted after it but there was no humanly possible way he could keep up. Gus was left behind so he tried to catch up. Hunter cussing the entire way there. "No no no no please don't fucking- shit man, shit!"

Just as it exits the treeline it goes higher to scan the area for its target and Hunter is running like it's his own life on the line, which was about to be the case anyway. He saw it lower again and Hunter was just barely entering the paved area. Too late anyway, it's already seen her and there was no chance if she tried to run or fly away.

She did try; she dashed away in another direction from the group but Hunter knew she had no chance. He ran for Y/n and they fell to the ground as he jumped onto her, with his body covering hers protectively. She didn't know what was going on nor did she know the severity of it. All she knows was it looks like Hunter saved her and now he was in a lot of pain.

The Aopai seemed to be entering his body like a spirit would but the process put Hunter in a lot of pain; he was yelling in pure agony as he clutched into Y/n's hug. She was panicked and held on tight, not knowing what to do. When the Aopai was finished, he was out and he collapsed onto her. "... What happened... Hunter?" She shook him and laid him on the ground. "Hunter! What happened! Wake up!" She patted his face and shook his body but he was out cold. The only relief was the confirmation that he was still alive with the heartbeat she heard and the breath that she felt on her head as she listened for his heart. But still, for all she knew he was in a coma or would die in the minute! "Eda, help! I don't know what happened and he's not waking up!" She yelled in a panic and Eda ran over. "I don't know what happened! I don't know- I don't!" She repeatedly cried and held her hands in her hair. Eda knew what the thing was that entered him, she must know some way to help him.

"Kid, hey, relax. He's just asleep, everything is fine. Let's just get him back to the house and let him rest." She explains and pats Y/n's shoulders.

Y/n composed herself and nodded, then hoisted Hunter onto her back to carry him home. But before she set off she looked back to Eda. "Uh, could you make sure Koda gets home safe?" She asks, looking back to the terrified child who stood in between the other 4. "Please?" She asked and Eda took him away then told everyone else to get back home.

Luz walked her friends home and Eda escorted Koda, who's parents were happy to see him after hearing all the commotion earlier (the Aopai is a loud creature) and then she proceeded home quickly to assist Y/n with Hunter if necessary. Luz made her way there too and they ran into each other. "Oh, Eda, hi." Luz says and continues walking. "Let's hurry, I don't want the Golden Guard to wake up and attack the house or something."

Eda saddened and walked behind her. "Yeah..."

Luz looked back to the witch with an eyebrow raised. "Are you okay? You've been quiet all day. I expected you to be pretty excited to see me again."

Eda looked away and walked past her. "You were talking with Amity all day, who am I to get between you two."

Luz felt a little shocked. "Are you jealous?" She asks.

"Well,I haven't seen you in 2 years and I barely got the chance to talk to you all day." She explains. "Plus with what just happened I'm anxious and scared for the boy. I'm not sure it's an appropriate time to catch up."

Luz glanced away but agreed with a nod. "Yeah, your right. I'm worried too so let's hurry."

Y/n got to the Owl House and put Hunter on the sofa, panicked and unprepared she asked King and Hooty what she should do. She got blankets and pillows for him, took his gloves and boots off and even set a candle on the coffee table. "God, I'm so scared..." She laughed out her words nervously and sat on the ground in front of him. "What did that thing do to you?"
