AMELIAS POV
I was going to John's Hopkins next week. I was super excited. I was starting there to study neuroscience. I wanted to be a neurosurgeon just like Derek - and I mean my sisters too but I really admired Derek the most. And Derek was the nicest to me. I rolled over and grabbed my phone. I had a text from a random number. I rubbed my eye and read the text message.
"Hey! My name's Kai Bartley, I just checked and it looks like we're roommates at Hopkins! The housing portal gave me your phone number, is this Amelia?" They sent. Oh finally I got my roommate. I was actually stressed about that all week, and today when they released roommates it totally slipped my mine. I hope Kai's nice. That's really all I want.
"Hey! It's Amelia!" I sent back.
"Hey," Kai sent back quickly.
"Where are you from?" I asked.
"Minnesota? You?" Kai sent.
"Seattle," I sent. I opened Instagram and typed in Kai's name to see if anything would pop up. Sure enough @kaibartley came up. I clicked on the account and immediately noticed "they/them" in their bio. I made a mental note of that so I wouldn't misgender Kai when I met them. I scrolled down and there were a lot of photos of their cat. There were a few photos of them. They were attractive. I was broken from my thoughts when Kai texted me.
"Hey I don't mean to make this awkward but can I tell you something important?" Kai sent.
"Sure, go for it," I sent.
"I don't want to make things weird, but I'm non-binary and use they/them pronouns. I just wanted to get that out of the way since we'll be living together," Kai sent. I was glad they were able to trust me right away.
"Of course I'll use they/them pronouns. And you didn't make things weird at all! I appreciate you trusting me and telling me :)" I sent back.
"Okay cool :)" Kai sent.
"Do you have Instagram?" I stupidly sent despite literally stalking their profile.
"Yeah @kaibartley" Kai sent.
"Cool," I sent. I followed them and then got up and changed and walked downstairs. My mom was already cleaning up breakfast since my siblings already ate. I wasn't a big morning eater anyway.
"Oh you're finally up," my mom said, "there's some eggs in the fridge if you want."
"I'm alright," I said, "and I was awake, my roommate texted me I was talking to them."
"Them?" My mom said, "I thought you just had one roommate?" Shit. My mom wasn't the most accepting person on the planet. I didn't want her to hate Kai already, and I feel guilty that I kinda outed Kai too. I don't know their story of how out they are, now I feel bad.
"Amelia?" My mother asked.
"My roommate is non binary they use they/them pronouns," I said.
"Oh okay," my mom said. At least she wasn't mad.
"Are they nice?" My mom said.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"That's good," my mom said, "your brother and Nancy went to go pick up a few groceries for me, what are you up to today?"
"Finish a little packing," I said. Kathleen and Liz already moved back to college, and Derek was visiting for a few days and would go back with Meredith soon. Nancy was going back in a few days too.

KAIS POV
She was hot. My roommate was hot. I was in trouble. I was scrolling through her Instagram and was immediately attracted to her. I need to block that out. We were going to be living together and I couldn't make it weird. And she was probably straight. I mean she looked straight. At least she accepted me. I was worried I would get a roommate that was homophobic or thought they/them pronouns were weird. I'm glad she was accepting. I was scrolling through the rest of her profile when I came across a photo of her and a blonde girl. The photo was from over a year ago but Amelia had her arm around the girl with the caption "lover". I hasn't seen any more photos of this girl so maybe they were friends? A past relationship? The girl wasn't tagged either. I got broken from my thoughts when Amelia texted me.
"Wanna FaceTime I want to see you face to face," she sent. I smiled.
"Yeah sure," I sent. I called her and she answered and she was laying in her bed. She was cute.
"Hi," she smiled.
"Hi," I said.
"How're you?" She said.
"Good, you?" I asked.
"Good," she said, "I'm procrastinating packing."
"You're not finished?" I chuckled.
"Let me guess you're already packed?" She chuckled.
"Yup," I said and panned my camera to my packed pile in my room.
"Holy shit your room is so neat," she said, "you might actually hate me."
"Is your room messy?" I chuckled.
"It's not horrible," she said and panned the camera to her floor where there was a book, a pair of shoes, and a few shirts.
"I've seen worse," I said.
"I'll work on it," she said.
"If it's on your side of the room it really won't bother me," I said.
"Okay," she chuckled. She was adorable. We talked for another hour until I was starting to fall asleep. I said goodnight to her and plugged my phone in.

AMELIAS POV
God they were attractive.
