Kai could hardly hold back his excitement as he stood outside of the mansion. He wasn't a fan of rich people, due to their inherent entitlement that money bestows... but this house was dope as fuck! His old Honda looked out of place in front of the golden fountain and colorful garden. Bruce was upset that Kai hadn't been grounded, he could tell because his friend had complained about it all day.
No time to think about that now, when he walked through those huge doors his magical training would begin. His journey to become not the hero this world needed... but the hero it deserved. He knocked twice.
Every comic I've ever read has prepared me for this moment. He thought to himself as he heard the handle rattle. When these doors open I'll be face to face with a warrior girl who will forge me into a savior of the innocent!
The heavy doors opened and Kai found himself looking, not at Layva Klevher, but at a wall. "Down here." Came a voice. Kai flicked his gaze downward to find a... pretty girl in a wheelchair.
"Umm... is this the right mansion that houses monster-killing superhumans?" The girl smiled at him cutely. "You're at the right place."
This isn't the best start to my origin story. Kai studied the girl. She was a redhead in a white gown. Her emerald eyes reminded Kai of a green lantern.
The girl rolled out of the doorway, leaving room for Kai to enter. "Come on in. I've had refreshments ready!" I feel like I'm meeting a friend's mom for the first time. "Don't mind if I do. Do I need to take my shoes off or something?"
"Don't worry about that. Oh, I'm Ravel by the way. Ravel Lively." She led him into the kitchen. "Woah." Kai reclaimed. The kitchen table was covered in silver platters with assortments of food on top. Ravel rolled towards the sushi platter and bit into a salmon roll. She squealed as she chewed. "It's delicious. You have to try some." Kai waved her off.
"No thanks."
Ravel gave a small frown. "Well, eat what you like I suppose."
Kai loaded a plate with cheese and crackers, before following Ravel into the huge living room.
"Grab a seat."
"I'll take the couch then. I would take yours, but I can see that you're using it." Ravel's eyes widened, her jaw slightly dropping. Kai chuckled awkwardly. "Umm... too much?" Ravel busted out laughing. "No no, it's fine. I don't get many wheelchair jokes."
"Really? Because there is tons of potential there." Kai sat down and tossed a cracker into his mouth. "I don't get them a lot, probably because they are insensitive and hurtful to a girl who will never walk again."
Kai choked on his cracker as his head whipped to the girl. She was smiling at his reaction. "What? You think you're the only one with jokes?" Kai laughed. "You're an unexpected delight." "Oh? And what were you expecting?" Kai changed the subject. "So where is Layva? I thought she was going to be the one teaching me."
"Laylay is in Limbotory. A few nadirs popped up this afternoon and she had to get to work. Oh! Limbotory is a-" Kai cut her off. "Parallel world where the soul eating monsters, nadirs, inhabit right?" Ravel clapped her hands.
"Wow! You learn fast." Kai grinned and laughed maniacally. "I had Bruce tell me everything he knew about you guys! Of everything I've ever studied this is the one I'm most excited about."
"Here is the first thing you need to learn." Came a voice. "Everything I say is right and I will only respond to the title of golden goddess. Because to be honest I'm am loving the ring of that." Clover Nolass leaned on the couch, a cup of coffee in her well manicured hands.
Kai gave the girl a once over. Bruce's taste in women is so basic. You'd think after all this time with me he'd learn... that he can't get girls this out of his league." While Kai wasn't impressed with her on ANY level of importance, he would admit she wasn't bad on the eyes. "Clover!" Squealed Ravel before rolling over to the blond.
"I haven't seen you in weeks! I'm glad you're doing well." Clover looked down at the girl uncomfortably. "You too Ravel." She gave her an awkward pat on the back. "Limitz, I'll be handling your training today. Based on Klevher's training with Bruce we decided that it would be better if you were coached by someone more suited." Clover flipped her hair and took a sip of her drink. "Namely anyone else, but I graciously stepped up and offered."
Ravel pouted up at Clover. "Laylay did a fine job teaching Bruce how to use his mystic!"
Clover cocked an eyebrow. "She only got him to use it by threatening to kill him." Ravel opened her mouth, then quickly closed it. " I have some urgent business to attend to, so I'm afraid that I must part with you all. It was nice meeting you Kai, and Clover it was good seeing you again too! We'll do lunch next time." She waved to both of them before rolling out of the room.
"Is she always like that?" Kai asked. Clover sighed loudly. "I've only talked to her twice, since moving in, but yes." Kai jumped up from the couch. "Ok! I'm ready. Make me a hero Clover!"
"I told you to call me the golden goddess." Kai gave Clover a look.
"Yeah, that ain't happening lady."
"Worth a shot." She muttered under her breath. "Ok. Let's get to it, but first, is Limitz really your last name?" Kai stuck his nose up and smiled.
"I'll never tell."
