“I’ll save Layva.” Bruce restated to the room. Ravel stared at him in disbelief.
“R-really?” She asked from the bed. “Would...would you really?”
Bruce gave her a smile of confidence that he didn’t feel. “Sure, you both will owe me though.”
Kai slowly stood to his feet, clutching his broken arm. “Don’t think you’re doing this alone.” He manifested Pacifist and sent out a chain. “I don’t have much, but I can boost you with some sole.”“Please, take all of mine too!” Ravel pleaded.
“Absolutely not!” Jean roared at her son from behind. Despite seeing this coming, Bruce still groaned as he faced his mother.
“Are you crazy?” She spat at him. “Kopierces do not pity the stupid! I know this girl matters to you, but if she chooses to fight Meridian, then that’s her funeral, not yours!”
“Mom.” Bruce said calmly. “She has saved my life a dozen times in the past month. I can’t just leave her to die, even if she is an idiot.”
Jean used her crutches to move closer to her son, her face contorting in fear. “That monster defeated all of you with ease! What chance do you two think you have?”
Bruce laughed in an attempt to lighten the mood. “Fight? Meridian? I said Layva was an idiot, not me.” He gently slapped the mystic that still covered his legs. “I’m not going to fight anyone! I’ll just wait for an opportunity, use a mist bomb followed by Miracle Step then I’ll zip in, save Layva, and I’ll be out!”
Ms. Kopierce wouldn’t back down, she grabbed the collar of his Horizon gear. “And if he’s faster than you? Then what? Bruce, you can’t fight! It’s just not in you! Layva is a trained Horizon, this is what they do, you are just a chil-”
“She’s the same age as me!” Bruce interrupted. “She’s a seventeen year old girl who only refers to her own house as a headquarters. She’s a dork who dresses like a clown, can’t communicate well, and before a few weeks ago only had two friends in the world… and one of them was her pet!”
He gently moved his mother’s hands from his collar. “Mom… I’m going.” He walked back to Kai. “Use the chains. I need to be as fast as possib-”
“Half an hour.” Bruce turned to find his mother dropping her crutches. As she stumbled he ran over to brace her. She pushed him away and forced him to look at her.
“I can see you’ve made up your mind… and that I can’t stop you. You have half an hour! If you can’t save this girl and get back in thirty minutes I’m coming after you, do you understand me?”
Bruce looked at his mother and nodded. “Yes ma’am.” She sighed and limped over to Kai.
“Show me the chains.” The other boy looked from Ms Kopierce to Bruce in indecision. “Hurry up, Kai!”
“Y-yes ma’am!” He stammered before putting his chain of absorption in her hand.
Jean took a deep breath before activating her soul. Her eyes turned from brown to a glowing emerald green.“I’ve recovered a good amount of power.” She told her son without facing him. “You’ll take it all.”
Bruce walked to Kai’s other side. “Can you use your other chain with a broken arm?” He asked his friend.
“I can help with that.” Beangula said as she achieved her power. Dozens of butterflies made of solid, gray light fluttered over to Kai’s broken arm. The insects gently lifted the boy’s gauntleted limb. Kai still let out a cry of pain, his brow suddenly becoming damp.
“I’m… fine.” He reassured the group as he brought out his chain of deliverance and wrapped it around Bruce’s waist.
“Don’t forget me!” Ravel activated her power and grabbed the portion of metal Kai sent her way.
