Later that night
After the fiasco involving Hanma, things finally seemed to calm down.
For the first time that day, I felt like I could breathe.
When I woke up from my much-needed nap, the house was quiet. The afternoon sunlight poured through the windows, and for a few seconds, I had completely forgotten what had happened earlier.
Then I remembered.
Hanma.
My stomach twisted.
But before the anxiety could settle in again, I noticed Wakasa sitting downstairs.
He was still here.
Apparently, the moment I woke up, he had texted Mikey to let him know I was awake and okay.
Mikey's response had apparently been immediate.
He was thrilled.
Of course, knowing Mikey, he had immediately asked Wakasa to keep me occupied while he finished setting everything up for our anniversary.
Little did he know...
I was already doing the exact same thing.
With the last batch of dorayaki sitting in the oven, I walked into the living room and dropped onto the couch beside Wakasa.
Without saying anything, I leaned my head against his shoulder.
He glanced down at me.
I smiled.
It had been so long since I'd seen him.
Having him here felt strangely comforting.
To me, Wakasa wasn't just my cousin.
He was the big brother I never had.
He had been around when I was little. He had been there when my father was busy. He had spent time with my mother and me when things were difficult.
And now, knowing my father had specifically asked him to keep an eye on me made my heart ache in the best possible way.
If Wakasa and Mikey hadn't been there today...
I didn't even want to think about what could have happened.
So I simply stayed beside him.
For a while, we watched some ridiculous sitcom playing on television.
