"Thank you but right now there's a more important thing to discuss. Y/n," you looked up at your grandfather as he addressed you. "Do you or do you not wish for a gift?"
You cast a glance at your family. You knew there was a risk of tearing everyone apart, but... "I do wish for one."
Everyone let out a breath they didn't know they were holding. But you quickly looked at your mother. She gave you a soft smile. "Great!" Aron beamed. "Now the magic won't die when I do! Yippee!"
You watched dumbfoundedly as he went to two big suitcases by the door and plopped one open. "Be right back," he said and climbed in the suitcase.
Once again, silence filled the air. "Erm... Is that normal?" Camilo asked you.
"Absolutely no idea," you answered.
"Heyo," your grandfather said, his head popping out of the suitcase again. Everyone in the room screeched and flinched back.
"Errr... What just happened?" Ethan asked.
"Ah, youngling," your grandfather chuckled. "That's my room." Everyone stared at him, wide-eyed. "Anyway, Y/n, come here," he ordered, fully climbing out of the suitcase, a candle that was only barely burning in his hands.
As you stood up, so did Camilo but he went to join the other people while you went closer to the man with a beard. Nearing him, you could start to make out the flower designs on the candle. "So," he said. "I should probably do this the traditional way..."
He shrugged. "Well, I don't remember how it went but the main point is: Do you swear to use your gift for good and good only?"
You nodded solemnly. He handed you the candle and gestured to the other suitcase. "Open it," he encouraged. You reached out your free hand and clicked open the locks of the suitcase. Bright golden light filled the room.
When you were no more blinded, the first thing you noticed was how the candle in your hand had grown. The second was a symbol now glowing on the suitcase - it was a ring, in the ring was a quill and along the edge of the ring was your name. Now that you thought about it, there was also a symbol on your grandfather's suitcase but it had a brain inside the ring and his name above it.
The rest also stared at the suitcase. Camilo and Bruno sent each other a wide-eyed glance, both of them remembering something.
--- "Tío Bruno!" Camilo called, walking in the walls, hearing the rain clearer now that he was nearer to the outside. "I was wondering if you wanted to play chess with me..."
He arrived in the room, seeing Bruno intently staring at a vision.
"Hey, what's that?" he asked.
Bruno flinched, clearly waking from a daze. "We- Well, I had a vision. I just don't quite understand what it is..."
The two of them stared at the symbol. "Eh," Camilo shrugged finally. "We'll get to know when the time comes. Anyway. Chess?" ---
"Thank you, Abuelo," you breathed, handing the candle back to your grandfather.
"No, keep it," he denied. "It's your turn to wield it since you were the last one who got a gift," he explained.
"Oh, okay," you smiled. "Can I...?" You looked at your suitcase hesitantly.
"Of course, it's your room," he said, mirroring your soft smile.
