The Bad Boy

Chapter 106

    Steph's P.O.V.

Miles leaves my office with a grin and I pick up one of the manuscripts. It's called "Summer '08." I dive right into it, wanting to know exactly what it is about. I soon find it's about a girl living in a small town in Texas. She never has anything to do over the summer, because she lives in the middle of nowhere. She's obsessed with radio contests, because she always wants to win one and get convert tickets. She finally wins some, it's for The Band Perry.

    That's as far as I've gotten. I feel like it could use a few more details, but I really like it. I place it into the "keep it" tray and pick up another manuscript. Just as I flip the first page my door swings open.  In steps a women wearing a pencil skirt, blazer and white button up. She has a bright blonde bob that hangs just above her shoulders.

    "Oh hello! You must be Stephanie!" A woman greets me, coming over to shake my hand.

    "Yeah," I say, unsure of who she is.

    "Oh sorry, you're probably wondering who I am...Well, I'm Caroline your new boss."

    "Thank you so much for hiring me," I reply smiling.

    "No problem. It's more like a thank you for working here. I think you'll do great things Stephanie," she says.

    "I hope so."

    "Well, we probably both need to get back to work. I'll see you around!" She waves and leaves the room.

    I tear through many more manuscripts, completely absorbed by all of them. I don't have one story in the trash pile. I don't know if it's just that these are really good writers, or I'm just too nice. I'm afraid Caroline might get mad, so I put one of the manuscripts that I didn't completely love in the trash pile.

    I think for a minute then move it back. I still liked that one. I pick up another and place it in the trash pile. It didn't have enough details. Wait, that one had a great story line.. I move it back to the keep pile.

    "What are you doing?" A familiar voice asks.

    "Miles!? What are you doing here?"

    "Look at your clock ," he says.

    "Oh my god it's already 3 o' clock? I never even ate lunch!" I exclaim, looking at all the manuscripts I've been through.

    "Yeah...Are you glad I came now?" He laughs.

    "Yeah, are you sure this clock is right?"

    "Yes."

    "Positive?"

    "Yes."

    "supercalifragilisticexpialidociously positive?"

    "Stephanie, you can stop now," he shakes his head.

    "I haven't even eaten lunch yet and two hours from being over!"

    "I suggest you go eat and take the rest of the day off. You've been working hard."

    "I'll go eat but I'm coming back until four." I say, standing up and stretching with a yawn.

    "Ok." He says. "Where you going?"

    "Uh, I have no idea." I shake my head and rub over my eyes. "I'm guessing you've already taken your lunch break?"

    "I have, but I'm sure I have enough time to go with you." He says. "I'll go talk to Caroline while you finish up what you were doing. Meet you here in five." He walks out of the room.
