He's like us.

Finishing my explanation of my vison and of what happened, I found myself biting my lip in anticipation whilst I looked at those around me. Edward looked reserved, Esme was heartbroken, Rosalie had a look of heartbreak and anger on her face whilst Jasper looked more upset and worried, though I would imagine the emotions of the room played heavily in that. The silence  was still as the information settled in.

"He's a threat to us..." Edward started to say, only to be cut off by myself and Emmet who was leaning on the door frame that joined the two rooms.

"You are not going to kill him."

"Besides, you wouldn't be able to, not alone." Looking back over his shoulder, Emmet explained his statement more. "He's a hybrid, best of both worlds."

"Then what do we do? What about the pack?" Esme put forward, fidgeting with her hands.

"They would kill him, or he would be injured enough and then left to die." Carlisle put the movement down, thinking to himself before he looked up again.  "How secure is the basement?"

"10 foot walls, 6 feet under, separated from the house. All it would need is a heavy door with a heavy lock." Edward shared a look with Carlisle, no doubt reading his mind as he nodded. "Yea, it could work. Put some sound proofing pads down on floor and ceiling and walls, you have a werewolf safe room."

"Carlisle we can't..." Esme began, before her sentence fell away as she sought an excuse. "If the Volturi find out?"

Carlisle smiled and shook his head. "The Volturi have declined. If they seek out conflict with us it will only further weaken their fragile state. They wouldn't risk losing more power, they love it too much."

"So then we agree?" I spoke up again, looking around at my family gathered; mixed emotions plastered on  their faces. "If you guys won't look after him-"

"Wow there Alice...No need to get so hasty." Ed interrupted chuckling a little with his signature smile. "I think we should raise him, who knows; if Alice's visions are correct and might I add they have never told us wrong, then we gonna need this kid."

"If we take him in, we can train him, teach him...show him not all vampires are bad." Carlisle added.

"Give him stability, a family, care for him," Rosalie surprised all present as she sighed. "What? This is one of the things I've always wanted, a family..." She fell quiet but her silence was filled by the words we all knew.

"Carlisle you can't be serious?" Esme spoke yet Carlisle spoke firmly.

"I think," taking a moment before he continued, he looked at all of us present, pausing on Jasper who nodded giving his consent, "the vote has been passed. The child stays."

Esme looked defeated, but to her credit took it gracefully. Excusing herself, she went to the kitchen and we could hear the bags we had brought back being opened. Carlisle asked for Rosalie to go down to town in the morning and get some clothes for the boy,  to which she agreed and Emmet volunteered to help.

"What can we do?" Jasper spoke up rising off the couch as Carlisle placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Watch him, when he wakes be there for him, tell him what happened, and let me know when he is awake." I nodded a little, quickly making my way to the room next door with Jasper in tow.

Hours  passed by in the quiet night and there was little movement from the boy. Carlisle had come to check on him every hour and a half or so, and all seemed to be in order. At some point in the morning Rosalie came in to let us know she was leaving, as Carlisle happened to be in the room as was Esme. Not long after Emmet and herself returned did the boy finally wake. His green/red eyes swept over the room as he slowly sat up. His nose twitched as he inhaled, slowly waking from his deep slumber. "I'm alive?"

I found myself smiling a little at the boy, tenderly. "Yes. Myself," I started, pointing to the others as I mentioned them, "Carlisle and Emmet were able to save you."

"Save me how...?" The boy asked, suspicion filling his calm voice. Carlisle spoke up this time, saving me from breaking the news. "Not to be easily misled or distracted kiddo?"

Getting up from the chair, Carlisle gestured to the edge of the chair by the boy, who nodded and moved his feet; his eyes never leaving the vampire. "I'm sure you know what I am?"

He nodded, "A vampire?"

Smiling softly, Carlisle continued to explain what happened that night, skipping over the death of his pack. The boy's face was hard to read as he listened, the only hint of emotion was  the action of tucking his legs up under his chin. When Carlisle finished, the boy was quiet, nodding a little. "What happened to the rest of them?"

Pulling a tight lipped smile, Emmet answered for us. "There wasn't anything we could do for them when we arrived, you were on the brink as it was. Had we been maybe 5 minutes earlier or later...things would probably be different. I'm sorry," The large man looked away as the teen nodded, sighing slightly.

Carlisle stood to go, and I made to follow before Jasper approached the boy slowly, pulling me along with him. As tender as a rose, he spoke to the boy. "Hey kid...What's your name?"

"Oh uh, Y/N." A half smile  made its way onto his face, distorting the scar that ran across his mouth diagonally, which Jasper returned. "My name is Jasper, and this is Alice."

Jasper paused, visibly looking for the words. Finally overcoming  his indecision, and his social awkwardness, I watched as my husband shuffled closer to the boy. "Do you like chess?"

Laughing, the boy nodded wiping away tears that had formed at the edge of his eyes. "Yes...yes I do, I used to play it with the kids around the corner."

Jasper laughed, slowly smiling and the tension in the room lifted a little; as I offered a hug to the boy which he accepted. Quietly, the boy rested his head against me. His body was lukewarm against my cold skin, yet it felt right. Sharing a look with Jasper whispered to the boy, a hand resting on his back. "Alice and I will be there for you, always. We promise..."

"And I," Emmet spoke from behind the couch, while Carlisle added his promise too. The boy looked up at us and burst into tears against me, sobbing his grief out. Looking at Jasper, I saw him smile a little. 'He feels relieved. He won't be alone in life,'  Ed's voice muttered in my head.

"Thank you...for not leaving me to die." He lifted his head wiping his eyes after a while, his eyes changing between red, orange, green and purple. "You're worth it." Rubbing his back, the boy fell quiet as Carlisle re-entered as quietly with the rest of the family in tow.

"Y/n this is Edward and Rosalie; if you accept my offer, they will be your brother and sister." Carlisle spoke, attracting the boys attention as he sat up. "Ok."

"If you wish, we will take you in, you will take the name of Cullen; we will teach you how to fight, to control your thirst, control your shifting. The only thing, is that for the first few changes you go through under the full moon; you will be put in our basement, it will be padded and you will have everything you need. Do you accept?" Carlisle looked at the boy who nodded without much thought to it, though I suppose it's better than what his alternatives are.

"Do you mind if Edward tries to read your mind? We just want see what powers you might have?" The boy frowned a little, but consented. Nodding, Edward crouched in front of the boy, explaining what he would do to him and how it would work or might feel. To his credit, y/n didn't bat an eyelid and they began. Soon however Edward doubled over and cried out, holding his head . Y/n too grasped his head, clutching both sides with his hands as he groaned in pain. "Are you ok? Y/n? Ed?"

"I am never trying that again on him...whatever shield he has, who ever gave it to him or taught him...they were very good because it bites back, geez," Chuckling, Edward recovered first of the two, wiping the sweat from his brow. "Guess we'll have to do it the old fashioned way then huh?"

"Indeed...."
