Well this is lovely.

Finally the boys were hungry, and I smiled as Bella got up stiffly to follow them back.
When we got back to First Beach, the group we'd left behind had multiplied. As we got closer we could see the shining, straight black hair and copper skin of the newcomers, teenagers from the reservation come to socialize. Great. I made to turn around, only to be pulled back by Bella. "What's wrong y/n?"

I went to answer, but it was too late. I heard Eric call us over and reluctantly made my way over. Standing in the shadow of Bella and the rest.

The food was already being passed around, and the boys hurried to claim a share while Eric introduced us as we each entered the driftwood circle. Angela and I were the last to arrive, Bella slightly ahead, and, as Eric said our names, I noticed a younger boy sitting on the stones near the fire glance up at her in interest. So far I had succeeded in going unnoticed. 'Just blend in, hide behind the humans.'  I lied to myself, hoping it would work.

I sat down next to Angela, and Mike brought us sandwiches and an array of sodas to choose from, while a boy who looked to be the oldest of the visitors rattled off the names of the seven others with him. All I caught was that one of the girls was also named Jessica, and the boy who noticed Bella was named Jacob. A particularly strong gust of wind decided to exhale at the precise moment that Mike moved away from in front of me. And shit hit the fan, fast.

In an instant, several pairs of eyes fell on me and several things happened at once. Some of those eyes moved quickly towards me, I wished I could Teleport instead of Traverse; or in fact use any of my powers to get out of this situation; I heard the eldest, Sam whom I got on with relatively okish for the situation, call for them to stop and Bella and a few others rising up in confusion.

A fist was thrown at my face, and I let it slip past me. One of the younger ones, Quil I believe was his name, had made the throw. Letting him slip past me I rolled away with my hands up in a surrender. The wolves closed in; I noticed malice in their eyes, and apprehension in others, as if they were fighting a pull.

"Guys, come on; do we really want to do this now?" I asked nervously. "Stand down now!" Sam roared; furious.

I swallowed hard, preparing to go down in a respectable manner when a chocolate haired angel stepped in, putting herself between the wolves and the monsters. "Ok, I have no idea who the hell you think you are, but I've heard it's exceptionally rude to hit someone and attack them without cause."

I think my sarcasm is rubbing off on her...

"His existence is cause enough." Jacob spoke, venom as bad as what I had dripping in his words. "Be that as it may, Jacob, he is a guest  here in our territory. Billy has given y/n permission; he doesn't need to adhere to the rules anyway. Besides, do you really want to throw away your fathers hard work for this?"

Sam placed his hand on Jacobs shoulder, whose eyes never left me. "You know, if you want to; I mean we could leave?" Mike added, receiving a lot of harsh and negative remarks in return. I don't think he thought that one through.

"If you knew what he was; would you still protect him Isabella?" Jacob asked her, his voice trembling with rage. I could feel myself losing the battle to contain myself. So much blood...

"Yes. I would." Bella's defiant answer was reaffirmed when she reached back, slipping her hand into mine. Her eyes never left Jacob. "If he was the worst monster, a creation of something truly barbaric; if he was my worst nightmare, I would still defend him."

This seemed to settle the matter, further closed by Sam who approached me with his hands up. When he got closer,  he extended his hands. "Can we forget about this? We have food and drink, I don't think there is any need," he threw a venomous glance over his shoulder at the pack members who had caused the incident, "To spoil a lovely day. What do you say y/n?"

I stepped out from behind Bella, who seemed keen to keep herself in the line of fire, and shook Sam's hand firmly. "Agreed."

It was all fine and well, until Jacob muttered under his breath as we were all returning to our seats. "Pathetic, hiding behind a human."

If it hand not been for the eye witness and the fact Bella had essentially parked herself and I between as many people as possible; I would have, and could have, torn the boy limb from limb before he or any one else would know what had happened. Carlisle had, however, made me promise to not seek a fight with the Uleys; something I intended to honor.

"Hey, you ok?"

"Yea man, you good?" Snapping out of my stupor; I looked at my two friends whose faces were creased with worry. Bella in particular seemed to be worried as she examined my face and gently stroked the bruise that had formed on the side of my head. One thing that I didn't regularly have, unlike my family, or even Jacob; was accelerated healing.  That was assuming I got hit in the first place. Which, to date, was hardly ever the case. It seems, however, today I was not fast enough in my surprised state.

"Yea, yea I'm good. Also, um...thank you guys, especially you Bella; for standing up for me there. I mean, most people in there right mind-" I was interrupted by a pair of deep green eyes looking straight into mine, causing my tongue to fumble.

"Y/n, you would have done the same for me. It's what friends do." She smiled tenderly, and I felt butterflies swell up in my stomach and my mind going a bit hazy, as Eric laughed at my predicament.

"Do you want to walk down the beach with me?" I asked, or rather blurted out; heat creeping into my cheeks. Bella laughed lightly, a smile dancing  in her gorgeous eyes.

As we walked north across the multihued stones toward the driftwood seawall, the clouds finally closed ranks across the sky, causing the sea to darken and the temperature to drop. I noted she shoved her hands deep into the pockets of her jacket.

"You getting cold?" I asked, trying not to look like an idiot as I watched her turn to me slightly.

"Yea, I am a bit;" she confessed, flustered.

"Really?"

"It doesn't get nearly this cold in Phoenix ," she explained.

"Do you um, do you want my jacket?" Without a thought, the words slipped out of my mouth and I was mentally kicking myself...hard.

"Are you sure?" It wasn't a straight no.

"Yes," no idiot stop talking, "I'm sure."

Slipping off my jacket, I handed it to her, watching in awe at how she quickly but smoothly slipped into the jacket.

I was called away by Eric, leaving Bella alone which Jacob took the opportunity to talk to her.  I could vaguely hear what was going on, Bella was polite but it wasn't friendly.

He glanced back at me, glaring but his tone was sarcastic. "Oops. I'm not supposed to say anything about that."

'That motherf-'

"Oh, I won't tell anyone, I'm just curious." she smiled like someone who was only doing it for information. Which I suppose wasn't wrong.

He smiled back, though, looking allured. Then he lifted one eyebrow and his voice was even huskier than before. I had to significantly exercise my self control at this point.

"Do you like scary stories?" he asked ominously.

"I love them," she enthused, making an effort to not scowl at him. It must've worked because he lead her back to the tree-benches, sitting across from her. I hoped to the moon and stars he wasn't gonna tell her the story I thought he was going to....
