Hypothetically speaking..?

Bella pov.

We were in front of Charlie's house. The lights were on, my truck in its place, everything utterly normal. It was like waking from a dream. He stopped the car, but I didn't move.

"Do you promise to be there tomorrow?"

"I promise."

I considered that for a moment, then nodded. I pulled his jacket off, taking one last whiff.

"You can keep it — you don't have a jacket for tomorrow," he reminded me.

I handed it back to him. "I don't want to have to explain to Charlie."

"Oh, I insist." He grinned.

I hesitated, my hand on the door handle, trying to prolong the moment.

"Bella?" he asked in a different tone — serious, but hesitant.

"Yes?" I turned back to him too eagerly.

"Will you promise me something?"

"Yes," I said, and instantly regretted my unconditional agreement. What if he asked me to stay away from him? I couldn't keep that promise.

"Don't go into the woods alone."

I stared at him in blank confusion. "Why?"

He frowned, and his eyes were tight as he stared past me out the window.

"I'm not always the most dangerous thing out there. Let's leave it at that."

I shuddered slightly at the sudden bleakness in his voice, but I was relieved. This, at least, was an easy promise to honor. "Whatever you say."

"I'll see you tomorrow," he smiled painfully, and had a feeling he didn't want me to leave now.

"Tomorrow, then." I opened the door unwillingly.

'"Bella?" I turned and he was leaning toward me, his pale, glorious face just inches from mine. My heart stopped beating.

"Sleep well," he said. His breath blew in my face, stunning me. It was the same exquisite scent that clung to his jacket, but in a more concentrated form. I blinked, thoroughly dazed. He leaned away.

I was unable to move until my brain had somewhat unscrambled itself. Then I stepped out of the car awkwardly, having to use the frame for support. I thought I heard him chuckle, but the sound was too quiet for me to be certain. He waited till I had stumbled to the front door, and then I heard his engine quietly rev. I turned to watch the silver car disappear around the corner. I realized it was very cold and I clutched his jacket tighter.

I reached for the key mechanically, unlocked the door, and stepped inside.

Y/n pov.

Driving home, I entered to find Natsuki waiting for me as well as Emmet. Smiling at him softly, I made my way over to the piano, gently playing the piano version of a song called Legenden by a German band called Dartagnan whilst I sifted through my thoughts. Aside from the one that always plagued me, I had a few others running through mind.  I was quietly playing, noticing I had shifted to Sweet Surrender by Against the Current. Emmet joined me in the room quietly. I didn't stop playing, but played so we could have a conversation.

"Hey, Emmet..."

"What's up Champ?" Answering as he sat down on a free chair, my eyes didn't leave to piano.

"Can I ask you somethings? In confidence..."

"Sure, what's on your mind." Concern was all over his face as I briefly looked up from the keys.

"Hypothetically speaking..." I paused choosing my words with caution. "Could someone love someone like me? I mean...In the sense that I'm such a monster...I-- find it difficult to believe that it could be something possible...do you?"

Leaning back in the chair, Emmet exhaled in thought, clasping his hands in his lap before he answered steadily. "Yes. You have the ability to make someone forget that side of you, or even see past it. You're not a bad kid, even when you've shifted, even when you've shifted at full moon you aren't a malicious creature. "

"I can tell that that isn't all..."

Nodding a little I absorbed myself with the sounds emanating from the piano. It was a while before I asked my next question. "Hypothetically, since I'm both a werewolf and vampire...what if...what if I fell in love with a human? Would you guys hate me?"

"Y/n, no matter what; I will never hate you, we will never hate you. But if you fell in love with a human. Well, she would either be turned, with her consent of course; or, we would just have to tread very carefully. I wouldn't have an issue with it, especially if its the human I think you're thinking of;" I flushed at his comment but held my tongue, "and I know that, again if it's the same one, Alice, Jasper and Edward don't have issues either; neither does Carlisle in fact as far as I know..."

The piano filled the silence once again.

"Why she drive me up the wall like she does Em?" My brother looked perplexed so I elaborated.

"Why is it so easy to notice her scent amongst everyone else's? Why is her heartbeat so easy to hear over the thrum of the sea of others? Why is she almost always on my mind in the smallest ways imaginable..."

"I think you know the reason why, Y/n..." His voice was soft and encouraging, compelling me to make a leap into something unknown, a leap I wasn't sure I wanted to take.

"What if I, physically,  hurt her? Kill her even? It would plague my mind...you know what I am and what I am capable of Emmet..."

"Y/n..."

"Yea?"

"Wing it..."

"I can't."

"Then just do it."

***

Driving to school the next morning, the fog was dense and cold as it clung to my hands, my turtleneck jersey keeping it away from my still healing wounds. I was apprehensive to say the least, I was fiddling with the onyx necklace that Bella had gotten me, a habit I noticed I had picked up whenever I was anxious or in thought. I had met with Charlie this morning about a case he had asked my help on, something I would be doing in my spare time, and decided I would wait for her and offer to take her too school. I saw her exit the house, looking around trying to pierce the fog. Getting out the car, I heard her heartrate bean unevenly before it steadied. "Morning Bella...Do you want to ride with me today?"

I felt like kicking myself, god I was awkward.  Lowkey I was hoping she would say no, but in the same breath I was dying for her say yes. I was a walking paradox.

"Yes, thank you." She smiled and I noticed she was wearing my hoodie from the beach. I'll admit, she looked good in it. Anyway...

"Oh I have your jacket up stairs, let me just go get it quick." She turned and started to the house but I reassured her it was fine. Reluctantly she let it go and got into the warm car. Briskly walking around the car after I closed her door, I jumped in the drivers seat and started us on the way to school.
