Chapter 18 ( Long Chapter )

TW: Mentions of Violence and horrible injuries, mentions of blood

His attention is pulled away from his hands when he hears the door they came through open again. He quickly turns to look at the door. Freezing immediately. One by one they enter the court room in handcuffs. They all look at him with anger. The last one to enter the court room was Nate. His breath quickens as he watches him. When Nate and him make eye contact he sees Nate smirk before rushing towards him. He quickly stands up and backing up. He trips and falls in the process of doing so. The room goes silent. Several guards force Nate over to the other side of the court. Nate's just laughing at him. His body is shaking. Nat stands up slowly before taking a step closer to him. Which causes him to flinch. " NuNew, it's Nat. I'm here it's going to be ok ". He looks up at Nat. He's so terrified. He doesn't want to move. " I know your scared but you need to move ok. I'll help you stand up ok ". He bites his lip before nodding his head. Nat slowly reaches out his hands for him to grab ahold of. So he slowly grabs them. Nat then helps him stand and walk back to his chair and sit down. Nat then sits back down himself.
His hands are shaking a lot. So Nat slowly grabs them. Nat then gently squeezes his hands.
Shortly after someone says " Please rise for the judge ". So everyone stands. Nat helps him to stand. When the judge sits down in his seat at the front of the room he has everyone say a speech about how they will tell the truth and only the truth. After they are done with that they are told to sit back down.
" Attorney please give us the opening statements for the case " the judge says. Mrs.T stands up and walks to the middle of them and Nate's group. " Judge before we begin can I please request for more guards to stand next to Nate so he can not get up from his spot. He has shown that he has intentions to hurt NuNew ".
" Request Granted " The judge says and more guards immediately stand near Nate. There is also one that's standing next to him.
Once all the guards are positioned Mrs.T begins to speak. " We are all gathered here today so we can help NuNew, Max and Nat get the justice that they deserve. NuNew has suffered an unbelievable amount of pain and trauma. An amount that no one should ever have to experience. As if that wasn't enough he blames himself for Max and Nat getting injured. Nate, Tyler, Eddie and Jack have constantly taken their anger out on NuNew since the start of his sophomore year. Using his sexuality as an excuse to cause harm to someone. They beat him up everyday until his first day of junior year where they took NuNew to a secluded part of the school and attempted to murder him. They beat him all over his body. Breaking ribs and causing him to get a ruptured lung. They even left several cuts all along his body. NuNew was in and out of consciousness for two and a half weeks. He had to stay in the hospital for almost 2 months to recover both mentally and physically to be able to leave the hospital safely. He then moved schools where he's been studying at for almost 3 months. He met a group of friends who started to help him heal and recover when they found out about his past. Then during spring break they went to the beach where Nate and his group waited until NuNew was alone with one of his friends to go up to them and start attacking them. They made NuNew watch as they beat one of his best friends unconscious. When his other friends arrived they started to shout back when Tyler stabbed Max in his lower right stomach. Nate, Tyler , Eddie and Jack have all left NuNew with an extreme amount of trauma. They have hurt Max and Nat. We want to charge them with 1st degree assault, 2nd degree assault with a deadly weapon, A hate crime, and 1st degree attempted murder. We are asking that they get the heaviest punishment they can receive which is life in prison ". There's a break before she turns to the judge and says " That's all your judge ". The judge nods. " Please start to present your evidence ". Mrs.T nods and says " If you could please look over to the screen in the corner of the room ". He looks over to the screen and sees that it's his journals. He bites his lip. These are journals that NuNew used to vent his feelings. In these journals it describes the abuse he suffered that day and how he felt. Most of them even include photo proof of the bruises ". She opens to a random page and starts to read " September 18th 2020, Today I accidentally spoke when not spoken to. Tyler came and got me during my 4th class. He grabbed me harshly by the arm and pulled me to the back of the school where Nate and the others were already waiting. Eddie and Jack held me still while Nate started to yell at me how I'm not supposed to speak unless asked questions. They made me run until I collapsed to the floor where they then started to kick me over and over again " Mrs.T says and then shows the photos. Nat grabs onto his hand. " He continues by saying I don't know what to do anymore. I can't tell anyone or even ask for help. Nate said he would hurt me even more than he already does. I'm already in so much pain. I don't want to feel anymore. I feel so alone and separated from everyone. The whole school tells him if I do something wrong. They make up lies just to see me get punished. The teachers are even in on it. What did I do that was so wrong. Why is being gay wrong? I just want to love who I want. Will I ever be able to find someone to love me. No one would love someone like me who gets hurt everyday by others. I am loosing hope ". He takes a couple of shaky breaths as Mrs.T flips to a new page. " January 5th, Today Nate dragged me by my arm to the back of the school. They made me take off my jacket and stand in the snow. It was so cold. They kept shouting at me. I had never seen them that mad before. I don't even remember what I did wrong. They beat me and kicked me over and over again. When they beat me they threatened my parents. I don't know how they have my address but they do. They threatened to kill them if I said anything to them ". Mrs.T shows a picture of his stomach that's covered in black and blue bruises. " He continues by saying, I don't know what to do. I want to give up but that will cause my parents to much pain. I need to distance myself from my parents. I have to protect them. I can not handle knowing my parents would get killed because of me. I am sorry to my parents. I do not want to do this but it's the only option I have. I have to distance myself from them ". He rubs his head trying to keep himself calm. He can feel himself holding back tears. " June 13th. Today is the last day of sophomore year. They hurt me so bad today. They kicked me and called me so many horrible names. They made me feel worthless and unlovable. That I was a waste of space. They laughed as they kicked me and herd me begging them. They kicked beat me until I passed out ". She shows a picture of his injuries. " He says, I am in so much pain but the pain I am feeling mentally is so much worse then the physical. I can see the pain in my parents eyes. I hear them crying almost every night. They are worried about me and it makes me so scared that they might find out. That Nate will kill them. I often wonder if it would be easier to have Nate kill me. That way my parents will be able to know that their child is no longer in pain. So that they will no longer be threatened. So I won't have to feel anymore pain. I don't know how I can handle this much longer. Even though there summer break has started I am still left alone forced to distance myself from the world. My only comfort being the cat that my parents have given me. Even after everything they constantly tell me they love me. I hate myself. Why was I born like this ". He starts to cry. He holds his head in his hands. " In the second journal. It starts the day he fully woke up from coma. Before I read from this journal I will show you the video of the first attack. Which was originally told to NuNew and his parents that there was no video footage of the attack ". When Mrs.T presses a button the screen starts to play the video. It starts by showing Nate dragging him by his hair and harshly throwing him to the floor. Nate's screaming at him and kicking him. He then has Eddie and Jack hold him up while Nate continues to beat him up. He was coughing up a lot of blood. He starts to beg them to stop. He's saying that he will do anything they ask him to do. The video shows him start to fight to get out of Eddie and Jacks grasp when Nate takes Tyler's knife. He can hear himself begging them not to kill him. He's crying for them to not kill him. It then shows Nate dragging the knife around his body. Then Nate makes the first cut. He can hear himself screaming in pain. He covers his mouth trying to stifle his sobs. When his screams get loud he looks over to Nate and the others. He sees them laughing while watching the video. It makes him sick to his stomach. Nate looks towards him and they make eye contact. Nate just laughs watching him hear himself screaming in pain. Nat makes him look away from Nate. " Don't look at him " Nat says. So he listens and looks back at the video. When he does he sees Eddie and Jack let go off him. They then all kick him once before they leave while laughing. The video continues for 3 minutes where he's just laying on the ground. Then you see him struggle to stand up. It then shows him walk out of frame and the video ends.
" When NuNew walks out of the frame he walks to a house that's only 5 minutes away. For him it took almost an hour to reach the house. He had a collapsed lung several opened cuts and was loosing a lot of his blood. The next video we have is from Mrs.Betty's security camera " she says before pressing play. He's never seen this video before. He didn't know it even existed. The video shows him swaying back and forth as he walks up to the door. Leaving a trail of his blood. He knocks on the door of the house. When the door opens you see him fall to the ground. You hear Mrs.Betty screaming for her daughter to call the ambulance right away. It then shows her pick his upper body up and lay him down on her lap. You can hear her say " Don't worry dear. We're getting help it's going to be ok. Can you tell me your name dear " while grabbing ahold of his hands. You can barley hear him say " NuNew Chawarin ". You then see him start to pass out. You can hear Mrs.Betty frantically saying " Stay awake dear. You need to stay awake NuNew. Don't fall asleep dear ". Then the sound of an ambulance. You see people run over to them with a stretcher. " He just passed out as you guys hit here! " Mrs.Betty says. The paramedics carefully lift his body onto the stretcher. You hear them ask if she was coming to the hospital with them. Mrs.Betty replies by saying " I will not let this poor boy be alone until his parents arrive. I was able to get his name it's NuNew Chawarin " she says as they rush to the ambulance and the video ends. Mrs.T then says " This next video is when he woke up in the hospital after he got there. He wasn't able to recognize anyone not even his own parents ". The video then plays and you can hear him screaming in fear as he tries to get away from everyone. He screams " Don't hurt me! Please don't kill me! I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I want my parents! I want my mom! Mama where are you! Mom " he screams and you can see his parents rush into the room. " Ma'am please stay back he's in shock " the doctor says as they hold her back. He starts to scream again " Don't kill me! I didn't do anything please! Please don't hurt me ". It shows the doctor give him a shot to have him sleep. They then put a breathing tube in his throat and start to give him air. " He has a collapsed lung. We need to get to surgery immediately or this boy is going to die. He also needs a lot of blood bags " one of the doctors shouts as they rush out of the room. It shows his mother pass out before the video ends. " The next video. Is of the first time he woke up from coma. He was still in shock ". When the video starts you see him jump up and pull the Iv out of his hand. He grabs the small surgical knife and backs against the wall screaming. " Stay away! I won't let you kill me! I won't let Nate win! If I die I'll die by my own hands! If I die by my own hands then my parents will have an easier time accepting it! ". You see a nurse jump towards him and inject him with another shot to make him sleep. The doctors then rush to put him back in the bed and re insert the IV. The video then ends.
" The next video is the third time he woke up. He didn't react to anything. The only time he would react to people is when they would come close ".
When the video plays it shows him staring off into the distance. He doesn't move he just looks forward. When the doctor comes close to him his body begins to shake and he starts to hyperventilate. It then shows his mother walk close to him. She's able to sit next to him but when she tries to check his scars he starts to shake and hyperventilate again. You then hear the doctor say that it will be a miracle if he ever recovers from this. The doctor then gives him a shot again and he falls back asleep and the video ends. " The last video is from the last time he woke up from coma. Although he does panic. He's able to calm down ". When the video plays it shows him waking up and then start to panic. He starts to scream when the nurses try to come close to him. " Stay back! Please stay away! I want my mother ! Mom ! Mom please ! " he screams in tears it then shows his mother rushing over to him. It shows how he hugs his mother quickly. It shows how it took several minutes of convincing that they won't hurt him in order for the doctors and nurses to come check on him. The video then ends. " The first night that NuNew was awake he had asked his mother to give him a journal ". She switches the screen back to the journals. " September 23rd. I have been asleep for almost 3 weeks. Although the doctors talk about me waking up more then once I don't remember it. I don't want to if it means I will only be in more pain. Nate had almost killed me. All I said was ow. When he came to get me I could tell instantly that he was furious. I had never seen him that angry before. He dragged me by my hair all the way to a secluded area outside of the school. He threw me harshly on the ground kicking me they then lifted me off the ground and continued to hurt me. However this time he would punch me in the face and other visible places. That's when I knew something horrible was about to happen so I tried so hard to get free. I even tried begging which they only enjoyed. Nate had kicked me at some point and I felt all the air leave my body and it was so hard to breathe. Everything hurt. Nate then had Tyler give him the knife. I knew he was going to kill me so I begged and tried to get away but when I saw the knife pointing at my face I froze. I still remember the feeling of him dragging the knife around my body. I remember the feeling of my skin being cut open. They cut me all over laughing. Only stopping once I was soaked in my own blood ". She then shows pictures of his chest and legs. Showing cuts all over them. " He then describes getting up and walking. He says When they were gone I wanted to give up. I was in so much pain and felt so dizzy. I was terrified that they were waiting around the corner to attack me  again if I got back up. I was so close to giving up until I herd my mothers voice saying she loved me. That's when it clicked that I have to get up. I couldn't let my parents find out that their son had been murdered. I knew that if I made it they will understand why I hid everything. So I forced myself off the ground and ignored the pain. I had to ignore it because I knew that my parents would be in more if I had stayed laying down.
When I got to the first house a sweet lady comforted me. I would like to meet her again and say thank you. Because those words she kept telling me and reassuring me was like the comfort in the darkness. I scared her so much and I feel bad but she feels like my protector in the worst moments of my life ". He can hear Mrs.Betty crying. He can hear his parents crying as well. Mrs.T skips to another page and he notices what page it is. He looks down at his hands trying to prepare himself. " The last journal I would like to show you is one where he lets himself say whatever he needs to. One where he was in a lot of physical and mental pain " she says before reading off the journal entry. " September 31st. Why didn't I stay on the floor. Why didn't I give up. Why did I get up and walk to the house, traumatizing that sweet elderly woman. Hurting my parents by having them see me in this state. Would it have been better if I just stayed on the ground. Everything hurts and I want to give up. I  won't ever be able to recover. I can't have anyone come near me without wanting to run away. Everyone scares me. I can see the pain in my mothers eyes when she looks at me. The way she tries so hard to stay strong. I can hear her crying every night when she thinks I'm asleep. I gave her to much pain. I have only given them pain for over a year. I hurt the only people that cared about me. I am still hurting them. And I will continue to hurt them by not being able to recover. I'm sorry mom and dad. I'm sorry that your son is weak and won't be able to recover. I'm sorry that your son has caused you so much pain. I really didn't mean to. I should have never confessed to Noah. If I didn't confess then none of this would have happened. They wouldn't have found out I'm gay. I hate myself. I should have stayed on the ground and accepted what had happened. I'm so sorry ". He can hear the way Mrs.T's voice breaks every so often while reading the journal. He turns to look at Nate and sees him looking at him. He can see him smirking as if he has won. He holds his hands into a tight fist as he looks away from Nate. Tears are streaming down his face. Nat grabs his hand he can feel Nat's hands shaking. That's all it takes for him to break down crying. " Judge can I please request for a recess to give NuNew time to collect himself before we continue with the second half of the evidence " Mrs.T asked. " Request granted. I will give everyone a 10 minute break ".
" Thank you Judge " Mrs.T says before gesturing them to walk to the room. He forces himself up and walks back into the small room. Once he's inside he collapses on to the floor. Everyone rushes over to him. Mrs.F closes the door. " NuNew are you ok " Max asked worried. His whole body is shaking while he cries. Max and Mrs.T help him sit down in a chair. " I didn't know there was a video from Mrs.Betty's house. And when the videos were playing they were all laughing. They were laughing at my pain " he says while pulling at his hair. Nat grabs ahold of his hands so he won't hurt himself. " Just a little bit ago I looked at him and he smirked at me. Like he had already won. It's so hard to be there " he says. The judge comes into the room and sees him. " I saw you collapse before the door closed. Are you ok to finish this trial NuNew. I only want you in the court room if you can handle it " the judge said. It's quiet for a while as he tries to collect himself. " I have to be in there. I cannot let him win over me. I won't let him control me again. I can't ". The judge nods. If it gets to much to handle I need you to tell Mr.Kornthas ok ". He nods his head. " There's a couple minutes left. Drink some water before going back in to the room ". He nods his head and the judge walks back into the court room. Mrs.T hands him some water. He tells her thank you before drinking the water. " I'm sorry this is so hard on you. I am just trying to show all the evidence so that we can charge all of them and get the sentence you want for them ". He shakes his head. " You're trying to help me. I don't want you to hold back on what you show no matter how I might react. I just want them to be out away for life " he says. Mrs.T nods and says " Let's go outside we only have a minute before we have to start " she says and he nods. He stands up wiping away his tears. He then walks back into the court and sits down in his chair. He hears Nate say " Welcome back NuNew " in the same voice he used when he first grabbed him on the first day of his junior year. It makes him freeze. The judge loudly says " You are not allowed to talk with NuNew. If you talk to him again I will kick you out of the court room. Do you understand me Nate " the judge says in a stern voice. " I said do you understand me " the judge repeats. " Yes Judge " Nate says.
" Attorney please start to present the rest of the evidence ".
