Get through Senior year. That's all I needed to do then I would finally be able to get out of Oklahoma.
Head down and keep quiet. That's all I had to do and I would survive. That was my strategy.
Until I caught the attention of the wrong person.

"Hey, Gen." Carson greets me just as I close my locker.
"Oh, Carson." I smiled. "How are you?"
He leans against the locker. "I'm cool." He shifts on his feet with a nervous smile. "So, I was hoping since it's Friday, we could watch a movie. My parents won't be at home."
"That sounds great but I can't." I closed my locker and faced Carson with an apologetic look. "We could do it another time." I suggest.
Carson hesitates, scratching the back of his head. Sighing, he shakes his head. "May I ask why?"
"A friend needs me."
What Carson does next takes me by surprise. He frowns, scoffing while his face scrunches up in disturbance. "You don't have to lie, Gen. I know it's Mercer."
"Actually, it's not." I frowned.
He lets me know that he doesn't believe me with the face he makes. "You don't have many friends, Genevieve."
Okay, ouch.
How would he know how many friends I'd have or not?
My frown deepened while I assessed him. Where was this sudden anger coming from? "What's your problem?"
Carson sighs and rubs a hand down his face. "I've told you I like you and every time I see you around Mercer, you two seem to be getting close. Do you see my problem?"
I didn't have time for this.
But I did know I had to clear things up.
Carson wouldn't pass as being anything more than my friend. Yes, I used him to piss off Mercer and that makes me feel guilty because Carson is a nice person. And it's great that he doesn't know that. Carson started in the beginning, with the signals and they confused me. Like that kiss on the cheek the other day. But then he finally came out and said he liked me and that was after the fact Mercer threatened him.
One thing for sure was I was my own person and I didn't belong to anyone.
I wasn't looking for a boyfriend nor was I looking for any sort of commitment.
