-Maeve's POV-
We've been back on the road for a few hours. The sun will rise soon.
I look over at River, her eyes were focused on the road.
I watched the way her eyes would flicker to every sign we passed, the way she'd scrunch her nose when a stray hair would brush against her skin. She always made the simplest things look so pretty.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" She chuckles after slightly glancing my way.
I smile and lay my hand on her thigh, giving it a small caress with my thumb. "You're just so pretty Rivs."
Her cheeks immediately took on a warm shade of pink. I love that I can have such an effect on her.
"I'm trying to focus on the road Maeve," she mutters gesturing to how my hand was inching higher up her thigh.
I bite my lower lip to stop the laugh from spilling past. She's so fun to mess with.
River glares at me from the corner of her eye. "It's not funny, tease."
Her serious expression only made me laugh more.

It's later in the day now. We've stopped for gas once and again were on the road.
The air has become humid now which only added to the agitation of being on the road.
I let out a groan and rest my head against the window.
"What's wrong?" Rivers eyebrows arched in question.
I shrugged, "I don't want to be in this stupid car anymore."
"Ah." She hummed, "Neither do I"
"Can we stop somewhere?" I asked, dragging out the last word.
She looked over at me for a second. "Maeve, the more we stop the longer it'll take to get to where we need to be."
She was right, but I couldn't stand to be in the car any longer.
"But it's hot." I add dramatically.
"Well what the fuck am I supposed to do?" River snapped, her tone suddenly agitated.
I immediately quiet. I didn't mean to annoy her.
I keep my gaze on my lap, slighting fiddling with my fingers to try to distract myself from the sting of sadness in my chest.
I see River glance at me through the corner of my eye. She adjusts her posture, letting out a small puff of air.
The small action causes me to tense, the lump in my throat getting bigger.
She's mad at me.
River suddenly places her hand on my knee giving it a gentle squeeze, "I'm not mad at you baby, I didn't mean to seem snappy."
I nod stiffly as tears fall down my face. Her soft tone making them spill over.
Her hand comes up to touch my cheek, gently rubbing away my tears all the while keeping focus on the road.
"Don't cry my love, it's just really hot and stuffy in the car. You know how crazy I get in the heat."
I let out a soft laugh followed by a sniff and wipe away the rest of my tears.
"I know Rivs, but you know how sensitive I am."
She smiles over at me softly and places a small kiss against my hand.
