One second, my world was bright and full of promises for the future

One second, my world was bright and full of promises for the future. The next, the light had been snuffed out with a single swipe of a blade.

My entire life flashed as I watched Cleo's emerald eyes widen in disbelief as she clutched her throat with tied up hands. Klaus released her and held his arms outstretched at his sides, accepting his death. He knew he wouldn't get away. He was outnumbered and outmatched.

I was at Cleo's side in seconds, catching her before she could fall and easing her to the ground. A chain of shrill howls rang out through the night, full of sorrow and despair.

Nat lunged toward Klaus, all lean muscle and precise trajectory as she snared his ankle in an unforgiving snap of her jaws. The first scream that came out of Klaus's mouth was a shot of pure ecstasy for me.

"DO NOT KILL HIM," I demanded, my voice booming through the clearing and shaking the ground with its force. "I want him alive and chained the fuck up!"

After my order was delivered, I left the rest of the dirty work to Steve, Andrei and Nat. I knew they'd make sure the necessary precautions would be taken.

Everything faded into the background and then it was only me and Cleo.

I frantically bit into my wrist and shoved it toward her parted lips, encouraging her to drink from my veins. It's the only hope I have of saving her life—my child's life—if she wasn't already too far gone.

Cleo's eyes were hooded, her breaths coming in quick in short as she fought to take in oxygen. She was choking on her own blood, and when she refused to latch onto my wrist, the sliver of hope I'd felt only moments ago vanished into thin air.

All I could do now was stare down at the love of my life and hold her as she bled out.

"Cleo, baby," my voice cracked, raw with emotion and the denial of what was happening.

This couldn't be it.

This could not be how it fucking ends for her. I refused to believe it. If anyone on this god forsaken planet deserved better, it was her. But instead, she was dying.

She was dying, and there wasn't a goddamn thing I could do to prevent it.

"Cleo, please," I pleaded. "Please! I can't do this without you!" tears blurred my vision, and I could no longer see past the anguish that burned in my soul. Streams fell down my cheeks, landing on her bloodstained, porcelain skin.
