“Ali I know this year has been hard for us but I have never felt happier. Sweetie you are the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am so lucky to have you in my life! Not only are you an amazing daughter, but you are my best friend. I know this isn’t much and you deserve so much more but happy birthday Ali!”

As my mom handed me an envelope probably containing a normal birthday card and some cash I couldn’t help but look back on this past year. My freshman year in high school was great! Never believe any of the rumors about freshman year being awful and awkward! I made a ton of new friends and of course having a boyfriend might have helped. Everything changed when summer started. My mom and dad used to be so close. I used to admire their relationship and wanted to grow up and get married and strive for a life just as they lived. It was around July when the fighting started and by the end of the summer they were separated. Now they are officially divorced. My dad wants nothing to do with me or my mom. At first it was hard, and there was A LOT of crying, but this brought me and mom so much closer. She is most definitely my best friend and I couldn’t ask for anything more.

I could have chosen to have a 16th birthday party with my friends, but I chose to spend it with my mom. It made it so much more special.

I started to open the card and I noticed my mom fighting with a smile plastered on her face. What was with her? I looked down to read the card and pull out the cash but I stopped dead in my tracks.

“OH MY GOD! MOM! Holy shit! AHHHHHHHH!”

My mom squealed and laughed at my reaction “No need to use that language my darling” my mom joked.

“You did not! I MUST be dreaming! You got me tickets to see THE GAZE!” I screamed and pulled my mom into a spine cracking hug “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!”

“You’re welcome sweetie. It was so hard to keep it a surprise! WE ARE GOING TO SEE THE GAZE!”

I and my mom danced around singing our favorite songs by the Gaze. The Gaze was one of the hottest boy bands out there. Usually my mom and I would make fun of all the boy band non sense, but this was different, it was the Gaze! They are amazing and their music was incredible and so relatable. Plus the four guys in the Gaze were pretty damn attractive.

Noah the drummer and backup singer has black shaggy hair and usually wears a hat. He also has tattoos covering his arms and chest. I never thought tattoos were sexy until I saw Noah. Although Noah had a bad boy exterior he was labeled as the sweet one in the group. In all of his interviews he made sure he thanked all his fans and family for what the band has accomplished. I can never get over how adorable he is!

Next were the twins Jack, and Finn. They both have light brown hair that swoops around their head and smiles that can win any girl over. I about pass out every time I see a picture of them. Although they are identical it’s easy telling them apart. Jack is the funny one; He is loud and definitely proud of it. Finn is the responsible one. He is two minutes older than jack obviously making him more mature. Finn keeps all the boys in line…..well except for Jason.

Jason….Where do I begin with Jason. Jason has auburn hair that has that messy disheveled look but we all know it probably took hours to style. He has bright emerald green eyes that are breathtaking and of course like the others he has an electrifying smile that lights up the room. Jason is the lead singer of the band and is loved by millions of girls of all ages around the world. He is the bad boy of the band and we all know everyone likes a bad boy.

My mom and I always argue about who our favorite band member is and of course my mom fell for Jason’s sexy bad boy act. I have to admit that on the inside I melt whenever I see Jason, but I always say that I love the twins the best. Over all, the entire band is perfect. Their personalities are a great combination and their music is incredible! They have the normal pop sensation boy band songs, but what we fell for was their soulful and emotional music. When we were dealing with the divorce their music helped us get through the pain. The Gaze brought me and my mom’s broken pieces together.

As I jumped around in excitement with my mom, I stopped. How did my mom afford these tickets? I looked down at the tickets that I had thrown on the table in excitement. They were floor seats! They must have cost a fortune! We live in a one story house in a big neighborhood by my school. We were living on one paycheck that my mom gets as a dance teacher and choreographer. I knew that there is no way we had enough money to pay for these tickets! I sunk down into my chair.

“What’s wrong Ali?” my mom asked sitting across from me.

“Mom, how did you afford these? These are floor seats at a concert that is completely sold out! I really appreciate it but we have bills to pay and-“ before I could finish my mom interrupted.

“Ali, Ali, shhh. It’s ok. I got the tickets from a friend at a discounted price and plus I have been saving up for a while.” She smiled and then laughed. “Ali this concert is as much for you as it is for me! When I got the tickets I about shit myself! I get to see Jason’s sexy ass up on stage!”

I laughed, my mom was practically drooling “Mom he is like 10 years younger than you…..COUGER!”

We laughed and then continued to jump around in excitement. I went over to turn on the radio and “Heart attack” blasted through the speakers. My mom started dancing around like a crazy woman and I followed.

All of a sudden the music turned off and I turned around to see Lucy standing by the radio. Lucy is my best friend. We met last year in gym class. We both don’t really have any athletic ability except being flexible for dance so we bonded very quickly.

“You too are so much alike. What’s with all the excitement anyway?”

Everyone always said that my mom and I are a like in many ways. We both have blonde naturally curly hair. She has brown eyes and I have green eyes just like my dad. That’s about the only good thing my dad gave to me. We both are short, she stands at 5’1 and I stand at 5 foot. Although we look alike our personalities are pretty different. My mom has a fiery personality, she doesn’t take any bull crap and she is always there for anyone who needs it. She is brave, courageous and pretty much fearless. She has all the traits that I wish I had. I am pretty much a scaredy cat. I’m not much of a people person either. We do have some things in common though. I defiantly got my crazy from her. We are loud, funny and totally random.

“OMG Lucy! Guess what!?” I ran over to her and started shaking her violently.

“What!? Ali what the hell!? That hurts!”

“Sorry,” I giggled. “Lucy…….I AM GOING TO SEE THE GAZE!!!!!” I screamed loudly and jumped up and down. She stood still and stared at me clearly in shock.

“You are going to see the gaze?” She whispered

I nodded my head smiling like a crazy person

All of a sudden she slapped me across the face

“LUCY! What the hell!?!”

“You’re going to see MY Noahbear on stage without me!?!”

My mom walked over holding something in her hand

“I probably should have mentioned this earlier…but here Lucy. We couldn’t go see The Gaze without our crazy bitch!”

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Lucy Tackled mom to the ground and grabbed the ticket. She sniffed it and smiled like a maniac. She then threw it to the floor and gave my mom a big sloppy kiss on the cheek.

“Thanks Ms. Nicki! I love you!” She continued to lie on top of my mom.

“Eh, why not…” I laid down right on top of them both.

“Happy Birthday Ali.” Lucy whispered as we laid there.

“Thanks guys…..I love you!”
