We made it through security and were waiting for our flight to be called. When they finally called the flight Emma helped me wobble to our seats. She put my crutches in the compartment above the seats and sat down right next to me.
I didn’t want to think about what was happening so I decided to make conversation.
“Emma….what is your family like.” She looked surprised that I said anything but smiled and answered.
“Well my husband’s name is Robb and he is a trainer for professional athletes. We have two sons named Luke and Ryan. Luke is 17, he is a junior, and captain of his football team. Ryan is 5, and he just started kindergarten. I’m sure you will get along great with them!”
I just nodded and looked away. Why do other people get to have a happy family and a perfect life? I’m stuck with a pile of shit.
I sighed and fell asleep letting a tear fall down my cheek.
“Ali wake up! We are here!”
Emma helped me through the airport and into the car. It was hot and sunny. Most people would think this is perfect weather….not me. I rather it be dark and rainy. I hate seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces. It’s disgusting.
“Welcome to L.A. Allie.” Emma said with a smile.
On the ride to her house Emma made sure not to turn the radio. I was thankful for that.
We pulled up to a large house. It was two stories and really pretty. I could tell there was a big backyard and there were only a couple of other houses around giving the Wilde family privacy.
“It’s really pretty.” I whispered.
“Thanks Ali.”
Emma walked around the car and pulled out my wheelchair. I sat down wincing in pain.
“We need to give you your pain medicine. What hurts sweetie?” She looked at my concerned.
“Everything”
“Well then let’s get you inside and comfortable.”
Emma wheeled me into the house and I looked around. It was decorated perfectly and had a homey feel to it even though it was spotless.
“Your room is upstairs but since you really aren’t able to go upstairs I pulled out a futon in the living room. She wheeled me into the spacious room and helped me lay down on the comfy bed. She gave me pillows and blankets and went to retrieve my medicine.
I sighed….this was my home now.
Emma gave me the medicine and sat down next to me.
“Ali all your stuff arrived early this morning. Once you get better we can sort through it all. Oh and I almost forgot.” She pulled out my iPhone and handed it to me.
“No thanks” I said shaking my head.
I don’t want to have any reminder of home.
“Okay” Emma said and nodded.
Emma sat with me for the longest times. Asking if I needed anything and keeping me company.
All of a sudden I heard the front door open and close and the sound of laughter.
Two boys looking a little older than me walked into the room. One had brown hair just like Emma’s that was cut so I hung perfectly above his eyebrows. I knew this was Emma’s son as soon as I looked into his eyes. They were warm and brown. I noticed that he had one ear pierced and was wearing a form fitting t-shirt with jeans. He was incredibly adorable. His friend had golden blonde hair with striking blue eyes. He was not as muscular as Emma’s son but still was built nicely. He was wearing a pair of shorts and a tight V-neck. They were incredibly adorable and for a moment I totally forgot that I was miserable.
I looked down at myself totally embarrassed. I had sweatpants on with a black tank top. My curly hair was thrown into a messy bun on top of my head. Whatever….Life sucked too much to even try.
The boys looked at me in confusion. Emma stood up and walked over to the boys.
“Luke, Kevin this is Ali. She is going to be staying with us for a while. Ali this is my son Luke,” She said pointing to the boy with her brown eyes “and this is Luke’s friend Kevin.”
“Hey, nice to meet you Ali.” Luke said smiling at me.
I didn’t bother saying anything back…I just looked away.
I heard whispering and when I turned back around I saw the boys had left along with Emma. They were probably giving me “Some space”.
I sighed. And laid my head down.
