Hiccup sat staring out into the ocean before him. It had been years since Berk caught wind out the tragedy of the land Y/n and her brothers called home. Hiccup blamed the conflicts with Alvin and Dagger. If he paid attention to the lack of letters sooner, Hiccup believed he could've done something. Hiccup held back his tears as he stood up and turned around.
The carnage was unmistakable still. Old structures were nothing but burn marks within the mountain side hadn't faded at all. Toothless whined as he paced the area again and again in vain. Toothless hadn't stopped aidding in the fruitless search, because he too hoped to find their missing friends.
Hiccup looked away from Toothless as pain seeped into his chest. He knew they were gone, but he still tried. From every day, to week, to month, to years since he realized they were gone. He wanted an answer. An explanation. A reason on why they were wiped off the earth, and how. This place was very defendable. Untouchable. So how? Hiccup squeezed his eyes shut, his chest aching.
Astrid and the others had checked the whole place over for the first year before they called it quits. It pained Astrid too much to hold to the hope to finding Liu, especially after what Atlas had told her. Even after they told Hiccup it was a lost cause, he still came back hoping to fine something. Only, he never did. Even with Toothless, he still came up emtpy handed.
"Y/n, where are you?" Hiccup whispered.
A cold breeze blew in making him shutter. Toothless whined and walked over nudging his friend. Hiccup fell to his knees and cried. Toothless winced at the sound, but had snuggled closer to Hiccup feeling a similar pain.
"I'll come back, I promise."
"Promise you'll stay."
"Til the end, Hiccup."Hiccup sobbed feeling betrayed by her words. Her promies. She never broke her promise. He screamed as the pain in his chest squeeze harder.
"Hiccup?" A worried voice had sounded behind him.
Hiccup sniffed knowing who it was all to well. The first amongst his classmates to befriend him. To believe in him after Y/n insisted on him letting her in. He shook as Astrid has slowly embraced him. It had been three years, and nothing. With their bodies not found or traces of anything other than scorch marks and a destroyed ship along the shore, it was hard to tell if they were still alive, or if they survived at all.
"I'm sorry Hiccup," Astrid whispered looked around herself. "But you can't keep doing this to yourself."
Hiccup hadn't ceased his crying. If anything, her words increased it. He wasn't ready. He wouldn't say goodbye. He wouldn't give up. He couldn't. She promised him. She promised. Hiccup clung to Astrid hoping to ease the pain. As she ran her fingers threw his hair, he slowly relaxed into sniffles and shutters.
"You're going to be okay," Astrid whispered. "I promise Hiccup."
Toothless hummed an agreement, keeping close to them both. Stormfly had walked over nuzzling herself with them as well until Hiccup was ready to leave. It was dusk when he had finally stood up. Rubbing his eyes, Astrid rubbed his back soothingly. He shared a look with Astrid before staring back at what was left. His chest constricted again.
"Good-bye, Y/n.."
Hiccup silently mounted Toothless and flew back towards his new temporary home at the edge that wasn't far from where Y/n was at last. Threw out the whole flight back, Hiccup didn't look back, only ahead as he slow came to terms of never seeing his best friend again.
