Dale had been right a month was a long time, but he was wrong to think that anything had changed. In fact as far as I was concerned Kai and I had become strangers to each other. I had assumed that I would have to somehow keep my guard up but it was clear from day one that there was no need because he had completely blocked me out.
Our journey had been filled with silence and diplomatic discussions about what our next steps were, nothing more and nothing less. Which suited me fine, or so I thought. There were times where the realisation that he was my mate really shook me and I couldn't help but wonder.
"I suggest we camp here"
I looked about me, we were but a day or two from the forbidden forest we had yet to glimpse it but we were on the right track there were no plants here and the trees that lined our path were grey and ashy with death. The stream that had accompanied us was black and slimy, it was lucky that we had filled up our water supplies before we had entered this part of the kingdom. I nodded jumping down from my horse. I tethered her quickly and watched as Kai did the same, his horse was stiff but relaxed as soon as he had tethered him up a clear sign that it knew he was not as it seemed.
It still amazed me how we were able to use horses, the King had told me about how hard it was to domesticate them, that our presence spooked them. He said if it was not for the humans it might have been impossible all together. They seemed much more comforted by our human forms, perhaps that's why humans were still here after all this time, they had the ability to use the world around them to their full advantage.
Kai began to create the fire while I checked our location on the map that Cullen had given me. Our kingdom was scattered over the regions, there were areas which were human territory, areas to which other creatures lived. It was much less of a kingdom now that I thought about it but realms within realms. We could not completely destroy the humans because they were here first, it was their God that created this world and our Goddess and all the other deities, to purge them from this land would be to incur the wrath of a God mightier than our own. In their eyes were abominations, which was in many ways the truth we were never meant to exist, not in the eyes of the Creator.
Our next destination was to the Witch Cove, we had planned to continue the journey with a small party that included Dale, Tiras and Kyal. The witch had cursed me but for whatever reason she had the last piece, we could not predict what she would do and so it was agreed that it would be safer to bring more people for protection. There was a chance that perhaps we could strike up a deal, though I was a little hesitant Kai had killed her daughter she would want something that would render our actions counterproductive. I closed up the map in frustration looking up to see the fire was lit and Kai was sat staring over the fire at me.
As I looked back at him he did not turn away as he had but stared back studying me with a slight bitterness. I shook it off, I'm sure he believed that I would have realised the truth which I had but he was yet to know that. I was curious though, what did he expect my reaction to be? There was no way of course that I could ask without arousing his suspicions so I kept my question to myself and instead posed him another one.
"What do you think she'll want in exchange?"
He sighed, moving his gaze from me and looking into the fire instead, he ran a hand through his hair which was now past his shoulders.
"I wish I knew. I'm afraid that we cannot prepare for whatever deal she may want to make"
"So we go in with our hands tied. She could ask for anything and we'd have no choice but to give it to her"
"That seems to be the case" He stated
We fell silent once more and I found myself leaning back on my arms and staring up at the patch of sky that could be seen, the night was dark and the moon was hidden but the stars twinkled down as though comforting me even in her absence.
