I woke up to the numbing pain that resonated throughout my side, a small groan tumbled out of my mouth as I struggled to open my bed laden eyes. I felt a hand brush over my arm and though the hairs on my skin raised, my eyes still wouldn’t open.
“Take your time”
The sound of the gentle voice allowed me to relax a little but the pain in my side was starting to overwhelm me. The more alert I became the more my body hurt, my legs felt as though rocks had been thrown at them, my head throbbed non to gently and my torso was overwhelmed by my cut side.
I reached my hand out and was surprised to find it was trapped by a blanket. I felt around me, slowly realising I was on a bed. Another groan escaped and slowly I opened my eyes, blinking rapidly as the candle near my bedside blinded me.
My eyes swept around the room and I was surprised by red flamed eyes staring at me. I looked away from him quickly but I felt his gaze on me never wavering. I rubbed at my eyes, trying to push the lethargy away, but movement caused me to whimper as I stretched my torso,
“You should not strain yourself, you shall make your recovery harder”
I nodded staying silent, as I stared at the creamy blanket that covered me. It took me a while to realise that this was not my bedchamber, nor was it a room that I had ever seen before.
“We are at Wolfbane Cottage”
I looked to Kai, once again it seemed that all my thoughts and emotions were so easily read. I looked around me again, this was the place that Dale had come to. My mind couldn’t help but wonder at where he was. I wanted to ask but something stopped me, perhaps it was the way Kai was staring at me as though he was looking for something.
My mind wandered to the events of last night, there were no windows so I could not be certain of what the date was but I was sure that it had all occurred last night. The bloody red wolf kept flashing in my mind, though I tried to push it away. It would have been better to have come across rogues, but what we had stumbled on was something that even the Goddess herself could not accepted. She had protected me the wolfless one, yet that soulless wolf was prevented from reaching us.
I looked up again, to note that Kai was still staring at me even as I momentarily met his eyes he did not flinch, instead the intensity of his gaze increased. I looked away again, too scared to ask about Cara and Hera.
“Kai, you will scare her if you continue to gaze upon her with such intensity.”
My head shot up as the door opened and Dale entered shaking his head at his brother. Kai shook his head as though he was coming out of a trance of some sorts, he bowed his head at me in apology and then swiftly left the room without a word. I stared at the door after he had closed it, was he staring at me because I had no wolf? Or was there some other reason?
I refused to dwell on it instead my eyes drifting to Dale, though it had only been a day I had missed him a lot. A warm feeling gushed into my stomach as he smiled at me, those familiar blue eyes staring at me with a warm kindness. He walked to my side, dragging the seat that Kai had been sitting it right up to my bed.
“What were you thinking?”
I stared at him and looked away biting my lip
“She begged me and I wanted to help” I whispered
His hand made its way to my hand and squeezed. A heavy sigh heaved from his body and he leant back against the seat, I turned to him my heart and stomach squeezing and not in a way that was comforting.
“Dale?”
He looked away from me facing one of the walls, his hand became limp and it seemed that I was the only one holding on. I pressed his hand but was unable to get any response from him. When he finally looked at me his eyes were watering.
