“Dale?”
I watched as Kai called his brother’s name again. Dale continued to stare out of the window his eyes swirled in a cloud of distraction. I hesitantly lifted my hands and tapped Dale on the back, he jumped at my touch and turned to me his eyes wide as pools of water.
My eyes flickered over to Kai who was standing at the door to our chamber, Dale’s gaze followed my own and at spotting his brother he stood up from his armchair.
“I’ll be back Izarra”
I nodded and watched the two of the exit the room. It had been two weeks since we had checked on Hera and her conditioning was worsening. Each and every day Dale had spent his time there working on every possible cure that there could possibly be. None of them worked but he continued to work in this exhausted manner with a determination I was sure would kill him. Just today Hera had announced that she did not want him present and he had entered a thoughtful trance which no-one could drag him from.
I was too worried to leave his side and had followed him like a child wherever he went. I wanted to be there for him as he had been for me, but nothing I did seemed to help, as Hera worsened he too declined into a cataleptic trance.
Sighing I closed the book that I had been reading and placed it on the small table beside me. I had been sitting here since the early hours of morning pretending to read just so I would have an excuse to stay exactly where I was. I wished that I could support him just as he had supported but I felt helpless, I guess I just didn’t know him well enough…
Yet he knew all the right things to say to encourage me and I could not do the same. Leaning back into my chair I sighed once more. It was frustrating that I couldn’t be who I once was but yet I couldn’t be the person that I wished to be either. I was stuck in a shrouded limbo, like a sheep with no shepherd to guide me. Instead I seemed to wonder aimlessly, running further and further into clouds that would become impenetrable and would ultimately deny me all access to my being.
The room was completely silent, except for the soft waves which lapped at the sound. I stood up moving to the window and leaning against the ledge. The beach looked very beautiful and relaxed with the sun smiling down onto its surface with beams of gentleness. The more I stared at the hypnotic lapping of the waves, the stronger my urge to run down and wrap myself in their coolness.
“Izarra”
I turned swiftly at the mention of my name to notice that Kai was standing at the door, the way in which he observed me made me think that he had been watching me for a while but his impassive facial expression offered no clue. Those red eyes however were full of fire though I could not decide whether I thought that they were warm or scorching.
I bowed my head at him, looking down. I tried to think of something to say but could not and found myself relieved when he decided to continue.
“You have a visitor”
I looked up promptly staring at him with confusion. A visitor?
