It hadn’t taken long for Kai to gather all those who would join our journey a mere hour after Pietro had left Delia, Tara, Daphne, Tatiana, Noah, Kyal and Laden all gathered outside the cottage each donning a horse. I looked back to Dale who stood behind me staring at them all, his sad face told me he was thinking the same as me. Without the best ranked protectors who would save the rest of the pack?

“Mummy!”

A small forced barrelled into me and I could help but laugh as I saw Cara, I had thought she would be left behind but here she was. I looked up to Kai who sat on a great white stallion, I thanked with my mouth before turning back to my adopted daughter.

“Will everyone else follow later?” she asked

My heart stopped as I realised fully what it was we were about to do. We were going to flee and let innocent people die, we would let the king destroy our home while we remained alive gallivanting in the wild. If I was truly the black wolf and thus Goddess incarnate I should be representing her on Earth righting wrongs and protecting her citizens.

“You cannot do that dead”

My head sharply looked up as Kai’s voice rang clearly through the crisp air. He regarded me with a calm expression, like he had been expecting this the whole time.

“And you would leave your people defenceless?” I countered

Kai stared at me his eyes slowly hardening

“Our people will not die, they have more value to the King alive”

“You don’t know him… he’s evil”

One would think that he would leave the innocent but I knew him to be spiteful. If he didn’t get his way then he would find a way to remedy his crazy anger. He had made a promise to destroy the pack and I knew he would keep this promise no matter what.

“Izarra you don’t have to kill members of a pack in order to destroy it” Kai stated simply

My mouth opened ready to find something to say and then it sunk in, like a rock falling to the bottom of a cold eternal river. The King had always said to destroy a pack you need to do nothing more than take their leader, the members are then yours and you will have only taken one life.

Kai looked away from me but not before I could see the great sorrow that flamed brightly in his eyes, he was already mourning his father as were the others around me. Dale’s hand squeezed my shoulders and all I could do was stare at him as he moved passed me and placed Cara on his horse.

I let out a heavy sigh before I moved to my own horse, it was a black mare with gentle brown eyes that regarded me carefully as I approached her. I had forgotten many things while I had been in the tower but one thing I would never forget was how to ride a horse. After the stars I could easily say that horses were my favourites. I revelled in that temporary illusion of freedom that one felt when riding, the wind blowing in one’s hair, the sensation of flying was one of the greatest rewards even if the feeling disappeared the moment you got off and your aching legs brought you to the harsh reality that we have been trapped in. Reality that was painful, cruel and unforgiving.
