The dinner table after the funeral was strange to say at the least. There was a loud silence that filled the room, empty of chewing or even the clinking of the cutlery. Instead we all sat staring at the food in front of us with our forks unable to eat.
I looked to Cara who was sat next to me, silent tears dripping from her face as she looked down into her lap. I reached out my hand and held her small one, trying to offer comfort that I knew would not fill the hole in her heart.
In my mind all I could see was Hera’s pale body, lying on a raft of lunacloves and other indigenous flowers. What haunted me was the small smile that seemed to be frozen on her face, as though she was finally at peace. The raft had been cast out to sea where we had watched it in the harbouring wind, until it was only a speck of white under the moonlight.
Dale and I had then stayed with Cara as other’s disappeared, finally bringing her to her new home once she had fallen asleep. She had woken up just before dinner so we had called her down, knowing that no-one would have the appetite to eat.
I looked up frowning when I noticed that Tatiana was not present, I did not ask though my mind was brandished with curiosity. Now that I thought about it, I had hardly seen her though that may have been to do with my lack of attention towards her.
“You should eat Cara” Pietro said gently
Cara looked up her nostrils flaring as more tears streamed down her face. She looked at her plate again but shook her head. We all stared at her with broken hearts, unable to face her suffering.
“I should like to be excused” I announced
Kai, Pietro and Dale stared at me, all nodding at once to approve my dismissal. I tugged Cara’s arm and lifted her from her seat. She followed me limply as I led her to her new room, it was one that was right next to ours, so she wouldn’t be too far.
It was a beautiful yellow, aspiring to capture the happy nature of the sun and all that was summer. It reminded me of a happy Cara, with her brightening smile.
I placed her on her bed where she just sat staring down at her hands. I sat next to her, hugging her she leaned in to me and began to sob. I said nothing stroking her hair as she let out all of the emotions that were bundled into her small body.
Eventually her sobs ceased and she leant away from me, staring at the wet patch that surrounded my dress.
“I’m sorry” she whispered her voice raspy
I shook my head gently
“I can get changed later”
She nodded absently staring ahead of her
“Why did the Moon Goddess take my mother?”
I looked into her eyes as she turned to me earnestly for an answer
