The moment I heard the bells clanging I jumped from my bed, dropping the book that had been in my hands just moments before. Midnight. The sound riveted through the air, entering through the window with an unapologetic melody, wishing me a happy birthday.

At 21 I could only hope that this would be the year.

The year when my wolf finally revealed itself.

The year when I would be accepted as a royal once more.

Looking out of my tower window I could see that the full moon was up, sailing in the sea of inky black, high and proud. The last full moon that had fallen on my birthday was five years ago on that fateful day when I lost the right to my title.

In the distance I could see the palace I once called my home. Lights blossomed from within the building, threatening the moon's intense shine; music and laughter could be heard even from here.

I looked back at the clawed markings on my wall it had been the only way I'd been able to keep track of time, my eyes lingered over the two X's, representing both my birthday and the Debutante ball held every year.

A ghost of a smile graced my face as I remembered the first ball I had witnessed, the soft music, gentle dances, beautiful gowns and the amorous atmosphere had been enough to make any eleven year old girl giddy and I hadn't been any difference.

With a sigh I turned away from the window drawing the tattered curtains and almost sprinting to my drawer as I realised I had wasted a precious moment. From inside of the drawer I pulled out three black stumps that were candles.

A golden lighter and incense sticks.

A soft growl erupted from under my bed and I immediately growled back.

The growls grew louder and I didn't bother to growl back again, even the stupid animal knew I was powerless but perhaps that would change tonight.

Not that it would be around to see.

I opened the drawer once more to take out a silver blade. It was blunt but I'd tried making it sharper by scratching it against the wall, it hadn't really done much good.

Slowly I crept to my bed and crawled down.

I took a deep breath and then lifted the covers and pulled out the small silver cage.

The growls quickly turned into snarls and violent movement but I held my nerve. In another time I would never have even considered sacrificing one of my Father's ceremonial wolf pups but it was a necessary evil if I were to save my own life.

The pup was certainly one of the cutest I'd seen. Regina's I was sure. She had always been Father's favourite wolf, strong, beautiful and majestic. I shook my head the longer I stared the less I wanted to do it but as midnight came and went I grabbed the mutt and stabbed it through the heart in one swift motion.
