WARNING THERE ARE SOME HORRIFIFC GRAMMATIC MISTAKES THAT I DO NOT HAVE TIME TO FINISH, IT’S LATE AND I’M TIRED. YOU CAN POINT THEM OUT IF YOU WANT.
I watched the backs of the two men who walked with purposeful strides ahead of me, I could barely hear their hushed whispers though the strong wind that whipped around us, lifting strands of my hair effortlessly and flinging them into a chaotic mess. I pushed back the strands from my face with my free hand, my other hand holding on tightly to Cara’s.
We had been travelling for five days, walking as soon as first light hit and resting during the night while Kai and Dale remained on guard. As I watched them I noticed they offered no sign of exhaustion, both walking confidently as though it were the first day. I could not say the same for Cara and myself, our feet dragged through the ground, ankles swollen and eyes lined with bags. No matter how hard we tried it was difficult to fall asleep, so we had spent each night holding each other pretending to be sleeping so Dale would not worry.
It was not the hard, damp floor that hindered my slumber it was the adrenaline that coursed through my body, every sound was a threat as were the shadows that crept through the trees. What would happen let myself go to sleep only to find that whatever nightmares I may have faced had followed me out into reality?
I looked down to Cara who held a distant look in her eyes, she noticed me and immediately brightened up, her smile lighting up the dull sky. I smiled back reaching into my satchel and taking out some water. I took a gulp and then passed it to her, she drank her thirst evident in the relieved suckling noises she made. I sighed once again looking ahead of me, as Kai’s eyes connected with mine I was once again surprised to see him give me a gentle smile.
He had been doing that a lot, smiling. They weren’t big heart-warming smiles but the effect they had was the same, because that kind of smile meant something more than just a polite greeting. I just didn’t know what more was. I didn’t quite return the smile choosing to turn and observe my surroundings, the sun was beginning to dim handing over his crown to the moon queen in the sky who currently residing over our heads. It was only a half moon but it was still beautiful the dark grey markings making me wonder who had wounded our goddess.
“We should stop here” Kai announced
We all paused in our steps, the area was well shaded with enough cover to protect us to some degree from the harsh environment, but with enough space to ensure an easy escape if need be. As per our usual routine Cara chose a tree to settle down under for a nap while we discussed what we would eat.
I reached down and then stopped myself midway when I realised I wasn’t wearing a dress, it seemed that even after five days I had still not gotten used to my male attire. I shook my head smoothing down my shirt and walked towards Dale and Kai. They stopped talking as I approached, although I was curious I simply did not have the energy to ask the questions that lay on the tip of my tongue. Dale’s eyes scanned over me and then he smiled softly.
“I’m going to hunt, there is no more meat”
My eyes slyly shifted to Kai, I wanted to object but I was scared of offending Kai. The truth was what Cullen had said and Kai’s actions towards Tatiana had scared me. If he lost control the only victim would be me.
