As soon as we entered Red Moon Territory the mindless chattering in the carriage came to a halt. From what I had observed none of the other girls had ever been out of the Crysta Region and so the environment around them was completely alien.
It was twilight but there was still enough light to be able to make out the features of this foreign land. In the past the King had taken me to many other regions within the kingdom but I had never been to Lorenae before. Crysta was a mountainous region, with great white glaciers and beautiful frozen lakes that remained eternally asleep. Lorenae however seemed the stark opposite, trees stretched for miles like stiff soldiers deep in slumber and where there had always been a cold, distant wind in Crysta, Lorenae’s gentle breeze, was heavy with salt and swirled joyfully with promises of the sea.
The sudden quiet within the carriage, not only allowed me to see the beauty of Lorenae but also introduced me to the sounds of my new pack. The running paws, the howls and growls that accompanied the carriage were enough to set my heart off into a race that could never be won. Though my nose was only as strong as a human’s I could smell the stench that immediately revealed the power and wildness of the Red Moon Pack. Already I could taste the life I would live here, below all and above no-one. A slave to all and a master to none.
I wished to be locked away in a tower where no-one would remember my presence as opposed to being here, a place where I would be put on display for all to see. I knew Pietro would see me as an insult, for the King to send him a mate that was worth less than his cheapest mare! The absurdity!
I watched each of the girls, of them all only Tatiana seemed unafraid. She had nothing to fear, she was strong, beautiful and an obvious leader. I could not pretend that I liked her but I could not lie about her features, of us all she would have the best life while we lived here and I would have the worst.
Her eyes met my own and she smirked as though she was thinking exactly what I had just thought. I looked away quickly, to confirm it to myself was hard enough but to have someone else confirm it for me was an endless torture.
The carriage began to slow down and I clenched my firsts, we had arrived.
Our keeper opened the carriage door and passed us veils. My hands shook as I placed mine over my head. One by one we stepped out from the carriage and stood in a horizontal line. We were greeted by none other than Alpha Pietro himself, along with the elders of the pack and five men who stood in a line opposite to us.
“The King offers you five of his women to match your unmated men” Our keeper announced
Alpha Pietro smiled, his blue eyes glistened. Slowly he bowed
“Give thanks to your highness” he said his deep voice booming across the whole area
Our keeper bowed his head and then got into his carriage. I did not turn as I heard the carriage leave, silence fell and all I could hear what my heart beating hard and fast, in an irregular pattern.
“One of our lovely brides is nervous” Pietro said with a deep chuckle
I clenched my fist further and tried to calm myself but nothing worked. The breeze which I had thought of as warm and welcoming had become stifling and suffocated me slowly.
Pietro paced down the line and stopped in front of me. His sharp blue eyes bore into my own to the point in which I felt he was staring at my naked soul itself. I knew him to be two hundred years old but the man in front of me looked barely a day over thirty, black hair smoothed to perfection, tanned skin and a body which he proudly revealed gave no hint to his true age.
“Do not worry you shall be well looked after, young one” he whispered.
I did not say anything for I knew that the moment he found out who I was he would no longer be so caring and fatherly. He would turn into the demon that everyone knew him to be and he would rip me to pieces, my screams doing nothing to stop his rage of violence.
