After L left the diner, he still didn't want to go home. Instead he roamed around the crowded streets, eager to rediscover the world he had missed during his self-isolation. Time seemed to slip away as he roamed aimlessly. He was fully immersed in the vibrant atmosphere and the refreshing air that enveloped him.
He glanced at his watch, his eyes widened as he registered the time.
8:15pm
A groan slipped from his lips as he was supposed to be in bed, trying to catch whatever sleep he could. Especially considering the lack of rest he endured for the past four months. And on top of that, he had work the next day. Already, expectations were set high, and he couldn't afford to show up late, unprepared and restless.
That would not only undermine his credibility with his new boss but also disrespect his previous employer.
Understanding the importance of making a good first impression, L power-walked, nearly sprinted, to the nearest bus stop. He almost could've made it there and got on the bus that was just pulling out, if the crowd of people weren't blocking his path.
He groaned again and pushed through to see what caught their attention. What he saw made his heart grow heavy, reopening old wounds he thought were sealed.
In front of them was a young couple, caught in a magical moment. Seeing the love in their eyes, as the boyfriend unveiled an engagement ring took him back to the day he proposed to Emmarie.
It was a beautiful sight.
L couldn't share that sentiment. A burning sensation filled his chest, a blend of bitterness and pain. He walked in the opposite direction, not knowing where he was going.
He fiddled with the ring on his finger, thinking to himself how stupid he looked for still wearing it.
It's been 4 months and she's not coming back so let it go.
Don't you think I know that? Don't you think I FUCKING know that?!
So why do you keep holding on?
Because I'm not ready to accept that it's o—
L took the ring off and chucked it in a random direction. Instant regret hit him as he lost sight of it. He slowly began to panic, looking frantically on the ground for it.
"Are you stalking me?" someone said, as she stood back up after picking up L's ring.
L looked up to see who said that, and it was Y/n. He hadn't realized he ended back at Ray's Diner. When their eyes met, she tilted her head to the side. She studied him intently, and what she saw could only be described with one word defeat.
