The detectives regret not speaking to Y/n first when starting their investigation because now it felt like they took several steps back. Their main theory was that Sebastian Glenn killed Jarvis, due to the fact he lied and there's proof linking him to the crime scene... And, they received an anonymous letter saying the truth behind Jarvis and Sebastian's friend.

From an outside perspective they had a solid friendship/brotherhood. But it was all for show, at least during the last months leading to Jarvis' death.

Now that Alan was thrown into the mix, things were slightly going off track. From the long rivalry between him and the victim, what he did to Y/n and his reappearance-there's a lot more reasoning behind him actually being the perpetrator.

L tossed Ranpo a file that he had been working on, "I managed to get in touch with his old teachers and classmates, this is what they had to say about him. Now we need to contact the people closest to him, family members, neighbors, old friends, just anyone I can think of. That sick bastard needs to-"

"I'm on it. I've arranged for us to go over to the Montgomery's residence to speak to his parents", Ranpo said. The room fell into silence as he flipped through the file. Then he spoke up again-ever since they left the interrogation room this had been on his mind. "What happened between you and Y/n?"

"Does this have any relevance to what we are discussing?" L was quick with his response.

"No, but I-"

"There's nothing, okay? I'm just a detective handling her brother's case nothing more or less." He mumbled. Ranpo ears perked up,"I'm sorry I didn't catch that."

"Nothing, detective."

Ranpo stared at him, as he tried to work. He had to admit seeing his colleague like this didn't give him the satisfaction L probably thought he would have. He knew from the awkward vibes in the interrogation room as well as him wanting to sit out that something sour must've happened. He knew it wasn't his place to ask and knew L wouldn't open up to him because for the longest he was seen as their biggest 'hater' of their unlawful relationship. Truth was he was just looking out for him.

"Ahem. So the New Year is coming up, do you have any plans?"

L shook his head.

"Well you should join me and a few of our coworkers at this club..."

He scoffed, "Ranpo, we aren't friends and I don't need your pity invite."

He scratched the back of his head, "That's true, we aren't and it's not a 'pity' invite. I just thought you would enjoy a few drinks and celebrate the New Year with us."
