Chapter 2
I guess I was what you would call popular. Daniel, unsuprisingly, was quarterback, and obviously, everyone on campus studied and kept up with our relationship. I sat in the cafeteria, Daniel's arm swung lazily around my shoulders. We were surrounded by most of the football team and their girlfriends. I spotted Liam across the cafeteria. He didn't try to avert his gaze when I saw him. In fact, he seemed glad I did catch his gaze.
"You sure got a beautiful one, Daniel," Daniel's friend and the line backer of the Varsity Football Team, Mark, said casually. His girlfriend, Madison, just smiled. She probably didn't have a clue what was going on.
Daniel's grip tightened almost painfully on my shoulder, but he just smiled. "I know," he told Mark. If he thought I was so beautiful, why did he beat me? I'd always wanted to say that aloud. But I was terrified. What if he killed me?
Another girlfriend of one of the football players, Kelli, was watching me quizzically. I had a feeling she knew what had been going on for so long. Her boyfriend, Chad, coaxed her to look at him, and Kelli dropped her gaze to him.
I sat there miserably for another half hour while I was prodded and squeezed in every possible way by Daniel. He rubbed my thigh, making me flinch. "Go to class and think about what I want," he growled in my ear, not at all sweetly.
I jumped up and left the cafeteria, towards my biology class. I, for some reason, was almost relieved when I saw that Liam was also in this class. I took a seat a few tables away, though, and almost immediately, he sat down right beside me.
I was trembling, wondering horribly about what Daniel had in store for tonight, when I lied and told my parents I was going to study at a friends, when I was actually and humilitingly going to be Daniel's personal stripper.
"What's wrong?" Liam asked me. The classroom was empty besides us and three other students. Lunch hadn't officially ended yet, it would in about ten or so minutes.
"Nothing," I muttered, tapping my pen on the table, trying to distract myself from my own thoughts. Liam, not looking at all annoyed, gently took the pen from my grip. His strong hand coaxed my chin upwards so I could look at him.
"These things aren't exactly uncommon in the UK, you know. You can always talk to me," his voice was low and lovely. I felt as if I had melted into the palm of his hand.
Wait. No. I couldn't.
Daniel would literally murder me, and quite possibly Liam too, if I left him.
I forced my face out of Liam's hand and stared down at my biology notes from the week before, looking but not taking in one bit.
I heard Liam sigh but I didn't look up. Class started, but I still didn't listen. I wondered vaguely how I always got good grades when usually I was too busy imagining the horrors of the night to pay attention.
I jumped a few inches when a note flew onto my desk. It read: Like I said, not uncommon. I barely suppressed a sigh. I scribbled back: Not trying to be rude, but I barely know you. Henceforth, I'm not going to enlighten you on my PERSONAL life.
Liam read the note and stared at me the whole of class. I was getting extremely uncomftorable by the time the teacher called for bathroom break. The whole class got up except for me. And Liam.
I had never gone to the bathroom at school, not wanting to see my reflection. Someone tucked a piece of my black hair behind my ear, then whispered right next to me, "I can get you to open up." Then Liam got up and joined the class at bathroom break.
That night I put on shorts and a tanktop, called my mom at work and said I'd be going to study with Kelli until ten. She and Dad worked together as book publishers, and as they were in the middle of publishing them, they wouldn't even probably be home by the time I did. Mom said okay, and I got into the car.
Daniel's house was fifteen minutes away from mine. I knew his parents were out of town, working somewhere in Michigan for the week. Daniel's little brother, Ron, opened the door and I smiled as he let me in.
"Ron, go to your room. Don't come out," Daniel said as I appeared at his bedroom door with Ron holding my hand, chatting away. Ron nodded. He worshipped Daniel, and there was no doubt he would listen.
Daniel tugged me into his bedroom, laying me on the bed. I tried not to whimper. He kissed my neck, then worked on my clothes. I said a silent prayer to whoever was listening. I tried to ignore the pain in my legs. It was going to be a long and painful night.
I was sure of it when Daniel growled in my ear, "This is what happens when you cry in front of my friends." I barely suppressed a scream.
