There were so many questions.
Too many almost.
I turned with my folded arms towards the still black woods as two guys carried Daniel's dead body from the house on the stretcher. Even with three people at the scene when it happened, it was already declared a suicide.
I sat on a bench just outside the house, watching them arrest Kellin for the murder of Julie. I watched them ask Liam questions as he sat there, the ambulance workers pumping some kind of liquid into his arm. They glanced at me every once in a while, but hadn't yet approached me. I was stiff as I looked away, out into the dark forest. It wasn't dark enough for my liking at the moment.
Eventually the cops came and asked me questions. They coaxed a few answers from me, but other than that nothing. They were flying me back to San Diego immediately, in four hours to be exact. Liam would have to be flown in a helicopter, with all the medics, since his kidney was failing faster than they thought.
He would be dead if they didn't get a donor soon.
I bit my lip, hard, as I walked over to Liam. "I'll see you in a few hours," I said quietly, wrapping my fingers through his. Liam smiled weakly. "I'll be good as new soon. And we'll be okay. Promise." he said softly, outlining my knuckles with his thumb. I gave him a small smile in return and turned to the cop who was driving me back to the airport. He nodded once and I got in, curling up like a child in the backseat, forcing myself to keep the tears in.
And just like that we were driving down the mountain, as if none of this had ever happened. Kellin was being taken to a jail in Atlanta, Liam was being life flighted to California, and here I was. Alone. I was always alone, though, wasn't I? My entire life, it was me against the world. I loved Liam more than anyone on earth, but I was still alone. Fighting against myself. It would always be that way.
I'd like to say exciting things happened after that, but there wasn't. And sure enough, mere hours later, I was in the San Diego airport, a hoard of cops waiting to take me to the station for questioning. I saw the news cameras outside; the news must've traveled around already. I wasn't prepared for interviews or questions like I thought I was. I was sad and angry, frustrated and exhausted. I wanted to sleep for a week. But I couldn't.
The California sun shone just a little too bright that day, a too-happy brightness that made me sick. Everything was awful now, it wasn't happy. I hid my face behind my incredibly dirty hair, hearing the media screaming and the cameras flashing. I didn't look up. I couldn't see their faces; so desperate to get a good story, but no, not caring enough about the actual story itself. I was just a good story, nothing more. To them, or to anyone.
I climbed into yet another cop car, driving the short distance to the police station. More cameras, more people. I recognized a few people, some from town and some from school. They were shocked, but also sad. San Diego never had something like this happen. Two students dead, one mentally fucked up, and one maybe on his death bed. We had crime here, but nothing this dramatic and hectic. I scowled. All it was was an inconvenience to them, whereas it was hell for me and Liam.
Right when I stepped in the door, I was greeted by four people: my parents, and Daniel's parents. The couples were on opposite sides of the living room, all looking down. Saying nothing. Daniel's mom was crying, but his dad had a hard look on his face that showed bitterness and resentment. They all looked up when I stepped inside.
My parents looked at me, studied me for a minute or so. Finally my mom got up, and she wrapped her arms around me gently, only saying a simple sentence: "I am so sorry." My dad's greeting was somewhat similar, and both of them looked so lost and confused it was somewhat heartbreaking. Daniel's parents said nothing.
I wanted to yell at them, honestly. Yell at them for abusing a boy who used to mean everything to me, making him mess his entire life up before ending it himself. But, in all honesty, did I care that much? I loved Daniel, but now I loved Liam. And I didn't regret choosing Liam, even though its not like I had a choice.
I could feel my face fall because of my inner conflict, it tearing my overly exhausted brain. I felt like crying, and then sleeping. But I couldn't. This wasn't over, not yet.
After a minute or so, a cop came in, leading me into a solitary room I had been in once before. He was quiet for a minute as he observed me. He wasn't observing much, honestly, because I just stared blankly at a wall, my mind drifting from Liam and his surgery and the questioning. I just hoped Liam was okay. But I wouldn't know until I got the questions out of the way. With some effort I moved my attention to the cop, who sighed.
"It's not over, not yet," he said softly.
I gave him a sad smile. "No, it's never going to be over."
