Chapter 5
I woke up the next morning with my hair sticking to my face, due to the tears I had cried all last night. I sighed, realizing it was only Wednesday. Two more days until I got to lay in my bed all day and do nothing. Daniel normally had football and baseball on weekends, so it was rare when he came over or I went over there then.
After dressing in an outfit that didn't cover anything, since people still thought I had had a car accident, I walked out the front door. It was blistering hot when I started walking the half-mile walk to school.
I reached it far sooner than I wish I would have, only to see Daniel had not yet arrived. Almost jumping with joy, I sped into first period. No one was in the room, except for, low and behold, Liam.
I ignored him completely when I sat down, and it pained me. He, oddly enough, didn't say anything to me either.
However soon after, he turned towards me. "Did I do something wrong?" he asked me.
I shook my head, tucking a strand of black hair behind my ear.
"Pushing me away won't help," he pointed out.
I knew this, but I shrugged regardless.
I could tell I hurt his feelings. I tried to tell myself that I didn't care, even though I did. I cared a lot.
"Look, I began, turning to him.
Liam turned to me and raised an eyebrow.
"I... Liam, you know I can't date you," I whispered.
Liam's face didn't show any sign of suprise, in fact, it showed intelligence. "Why not?" he asked. I buried my face in my hands and turned back around.
A hand made small circles on my lower back. "Christina, don't cry. Please don't cry," Liam whispered.
I wasn't crying. I was ashamed.
I didn't like showing weakness in front of people. Being abused so long taught me that.
"I'm not crying," I said, lifting my face up, even though my voice was shaking.
"But you want to," Liam said softly.
"Always," I muttered back.
The whole day went by in a blur. Before I knew it, it was Thursday morning. I felt weak, I was freezing, and my body ached all over. Mom came in to take my temperature around 6:30, long before I usually got up, because she heard me moaning and thrashing around in my sleep.
"Get back in bed, Chris. No school," she said sleepily, and left to go get ready for work.
I knew I was't sick sick, like with the flu or a cold or something like that. I was stressed and sad and scared. But I didn't protest with Mom, I just nodded and pretended to roll over and go back to sleep.
Images flashed in my mind from the dream I was having before I woke up. I was bruise free, cut free, my skin clear, my eyes glinting with happiness.
I was with Liam. We were running through somewhere, holding hands and laughing. Then he disappeared, Daniel taking his spot. With a gun. He shot me in my dream and then it had faded to black. I assumed that was one of the reasons I had been thrashing around so terribly in my sleep.
After I was sure my parents were gone at work and wouldn't be back until late tonight, I got up, wrapped in a blanket and a thick sweat shirt, and went to the kitchen. Pouring a glass of water, I curled up on the couch and turned on the TV. I was halfway through the first Harry Potter movie when my phone vibrated. It was a text.
Unknown number: You okay?
Who was this person? I texted them back, asking who it was. Liam, they replied. I sighed. I never gave this guy my number.
Some part of me was creeped out he had gotten it somehow, the other half was flattered he thought of me. Another really, really, tiny part, was wondering how he was texting me at 9:00 in the morning, when he should be in English.
How'd you get my number?
I replied. By the time he replied I had watched Harry defeat Quirrell and get out of the tunnel to safety.
Liam: You'd be suprised who has your number in this school.
Smiling slightly, I told him I was fine. I told him thanks for his concern. I tried not to sound too sweet, not wanting him to get the wrong impression.
Still, I really thought it was sweet that he texted me. Wondering who had my number unknowingly in my class, I turned off the movie and laid down on the couch to take a nap. I was still smiling when I fell asleep, dreaming about Liam, holding me tightly as I slept.
