Chapter 8

I didn't see my parents until the next morning, when Kelli and I came down to get something to eat. Almost as if it were some kind of joke, Dad said, "Well, Christina, what'd you do this time?" He was eying my bandaged hands. "Joseph," my mom said warningly from behind a book she was in the middle of publishing.

"I fell." I said flatly, leading Kelli to the pantry so we could get some cereal or some bread to make toast. "When are you going to learn to be more careful, honey?" Mom sighed. "When you actually start coming home and being a parent." I snapped, walking back out of the kitchen, Kelli at my heels.

"I can't stand them." I groaned, sitting back down on my bed with a bagel. Kelli said on the floor in front of me, holding a bowl of dry Lucky Charms, which she liked that way. "Do you and your parents fight a lot?" she asked me, sticking two of the marshmallows from the cereal in her mouth. I shrugged, "Not really."

From the bags under Kelli and I's eyes you could tell we'd been up late. She was so bent on proving some of the football players were in some sort of gang, but even though I hated Daniel from the bottom of my heart, I didn't really believe it. I believed him and his friends just thought it was fun and enjoyable to hurt us in the ways they did.

Around noon Kelli drove home, and I thought maybe to put me in a better mood, I'd go shopping. Dad surprised me by getting my car fixed fast, and I was free to go anywhere, as long as I 'didn't run into anymore trees'. The outlet was at least an hour away, so I left as soon as possible with eighty dollars cash, which was my leftover money from my birthday two months ago.

I had the radio on full blast, to distract me from my thoughts until I got to the outlets. I wore a bright yellow tanktop and black shorts, which might've been a pretty revealing outfit, but hey, living in San Francisco, you see worse every day.

By the time I got to the outlets I began to wonder why exactly I hadn't had Kelli come with me. But I just had a feeling.. something was going to happen and I'd want to be alone for it. And sure enough, without warning, I saw Liam enter Vanity Fair with an older blonde girl who, somehow, I knew was his sister.

I tried to hide myself in the rack of ten dollar sweaters I was looking through, not wanting to talk to Liam about last night, especially in front of his sister. After making sure they were walking in a different direction, I ran for the door. I was less than a foot away when someone gently grabbed my arm from behind.

Spinning around, the more paranoid part of my mind thinking it was Daniel, and saw Liam. There was a sweet and beautiful smile on his face. It made me sad. Why? Because I knew odds were I would never get to have him permanantly in my life.

"Think you could skip out easily?" he asked me. I watched reluctantly as his blonde sister came up beside him, also smiling. "This is Christina?" she asked, looking awestruck. Liam nodded, releasing my arms. He led us all to benches outside Vanity Fair so we didn't block the doorway leading in and out.

"Well, you're every bit as beautiful as Liam described." his sister said. "Um.. thank you." I said awkwardly. Liam was blushing slightly, but said, "Christina, this is Ruth. Ruth, Christina." Ruth smiled brightly. Obviously Liam hadn't told her about last night, because if he had, I assumed Ruth would be staring at me as if I was a very dangerous, highly contagious disease.

"I think I'll go get a water. I'll be back, Liam." Ruth told her younger brother. She got up and walked away. Once Liam turned towards me I was hanging half off the bench, trying to stay as far away as possible from Liam. He raised his eyebrow but didn't protest.

"Ruth seems.. really nice." I finally said. Liam shrugged, taking his iPhone out of his pocket and unlocking it. Suddenly I felt as if he was my boyfriend and was ignoring me. "Can you please not get on your phone while we're talking?" Liam turned his phone off and turned to look at my inquiringly. I blushed and looked at the ground. "Sorry."

Liam unexpectedly grabbed my hand, rubbing his fingers along my knuckles. I tried not to show how thrilled I got at his touch. "Don't be sorry." he told me, very softly. I couldn't help but smile. I wished that moment would last forever.

"Care to eat lunch with Ruth and I?" Liam asked me, releasing my hand once he apparently realized what he was doing. "Um.." I began. Did I? Of course I did. But .. there were complications. "I can't." I said finally. Liam stood up, standing almost six feet above the ground. "Yeah, I'm pretty sure you can. You just don't want Daniel to find out." he said. There was no point denying it.

"Come on." he told me, reaching his hand down towards me. I took it before realizing it and he helped me up with suprising strength. Ruth, by then, was coming down the sidewalk with a quarter of water left in her bottle. "It's hot," she said. Obviously.

"Christina's going to come to lunch with us." Liam told his sister, not letting my hand go. Did he expect me to run off or something? I wasn't that fast. I knew he'd catch me. Ruth smiled. "Great." her accent, unlike Liam's, seemed somewhat more American and friendlier. She started talking about her and Liam's hometown, and by the time we made it to the restraunt, I wanted to claw my ears off.

"She isn't usually like this. Honestly, she's just nervous." Liam whispered in my ear. His breath on my ear sent shivers down my spine. He felt me shake and I saw him smirk out of the corner of my eye. I shoved him with my hand on his abdomen and he winced. Telling myself he was just playing hurt, I slid into the booth first at the Italian restraunt we had entered.

Ruth excused herself to go to the bathroom and right when she left Liam turned towards me. "Just be glad Nicola isn't here," he told me. "Why?" I asked, stirring the water in my glass with my straw. "Once you get the two of my sisters together, it's... talkative." Liam told me, sliding closer to me.

There was about two inches between my hip and his hip. Don't do it Christina. Don't. I slid my hip slightly to the right, and the connection was like electricity. Liam looked down at me, a smile on his face. He was so perfect. "Do you think maybe... you could just do me one favor?" he asked. Oh God.

He looked around, obviously looking for Ruth, but she was standing in line, barely visible, for the woman's room. She was behind at least five people. "Okay." I barely whispered. Liam bent down closer to my height. "Promise me once we get rid of Daniel you'll give me a chance." he whispered. I made a noise in my throat, that was between a whimper and a noise of longing. Once, I nodded.

"Maybe sooner?" Liam suggested. He laced his fingers through mine and pulled the intwined hands to his mouth, kissing my hand. I bit my lip. I wished so badly I hadn't met him. But then again, I didn't know if I would've been able to survive without him here to save me from the Hell known as my boyfriend.

Liam tipped my chin up. "Do you say no?" he asked me softly. His breath smelled like mint. I had always loved the smell of mint. I shook my head once. Despire the face that we were in the middle of a crowded restraunt, Liam kissed me better than I'd ever been kissed before. He held my chin in one of his hands, and all I had to do was kiss back. It was quite enjoyable.

Liam pulled away, breathless, even though it had only lasted five seconds. "I really hate everything." I whispered, my eyes not moving away from his brown eyes. One thought rang through my head: Good job at that self control. Liam smiled slightly, then kissed me one more time. Fireworks were exploding in the back of my mind.

Suddenly someone coughed right beside our table. "Liam, you told me she had a boyfriend." Ruth whispered, her eyes wide. "Oh, my God." I muttered. I slid out of the booth faster than normal and bolted towards the door, as if I suspected Daniel had hidden cameras set up everywhere. Knowing him, he might.

I didn't stop to look back at Liam, not wanting to see his hurt and confused expression. I walked as calmly as I could to my car. Once I got in I stared in my rear view mirror, one thing remaining in my head: I was as good as dead now.
