Chapter 20

My insides were hollow. The world was spinning. The smell of blood was intoxicating. I stumbled backwards blindly, my eyes filling with tears. A pair of hands caught me and helped me stand. "Come on, love." Liam whispered, leading me away from the bedroom.

I couldn't feel his hands on me anymore. I couldn't feel pain. Everything was empty. Before I knew it I was sitting on the concrete driveway while Liam stood a foot away, calling 911. "There's been a murder." he was saying. He gave them Kelli's address and stood there watching me miserably.

I buried my face into my hands and sat there, listening for the sound of sirens. The neighborhood was quiet. I risked a look at the upstairs window, and I could've sworn I saw a sihouetted black figure in Kelli's window. I couldn't even force myself to be scared.

Finally, after what seemed like years, the almost too familiar sound of an ambulance and a cop car came speeding down the street. I barely felt Liam pick me up. "We're going to need you both to come down to the station and answer a few questions." a police officer said quietly to Liam.

We drove in silence to the station. I stared blankly out the window. Daniel had done this. He had finally went a step too far. Kelli was dead. She wasn't coming back. And it was all Daniel's fault. What had made me like him in the first place, that whole year ago? I had asked myself that repeatedly. It didn't make any sense why I did...

"Christina, we need to go inside." Liam's familiar voice brought me back to the present. He was rubbing his stomach absentmindedly. His kidneys. That only made my mood worse. I opened the passenger door and stepped out into the cool evening. The sun was setting beautifully. As if it was a final tribute to Kelli.

I let Liam lead me into the station. Four sad faces greeted us in the waiting room. Kelli's family. "Oh, Christina!" Kelli's mom, Jane, cried, jumping up. Her face was wet with tears and I could see the desperate saddness in her slightly crazed eyes. "They said you found her?" Jane asked as she wrapped her arms around me.

She took a step back as I nodded. "I... There was a note. And I knew something was wrong. I.. I'm so sorry." I sobbed, fresh tears falling down my face. Kelli's dad, Mark, rubbed his tearful eyes under his glasses. He pulled his two sons, Kelli's little brothers, Michael and Matthew, into a hug on either side.

The boys were twins and were only seven. They had no idea what was going on. All they knew was that something had happened to their sister. It really just broke my heart, watching the remaining family gather into a hug like that. Liam pulled me into a hug and I buried my face into his chest so no one could see me cry.

"It's not your fault." Liam muttered into my hair. His hands made small circle motions on my back. "It sure feels like it." I whispered, my voice cracking. I did feel responsible. I felt like Kelli had died under my watch. I should've known something was going on when she acted scared all day on Sunday. I should've known when she hadn't showed up at school today...

Then entered the two officers that had showed up at Kelli's house minutes before. He nodded grimly at Kelli's parents. "They have her." he said. Jane's face fell and she walked closely beside Mark. That was it. Kelli was officially dead. Her body was out there, about to be sent out to a morgue.

I almost said something when one of the officers said, "I'm going to need you two in that room back there." He pointed to a room down the hall way with a sign reading 'Interviews'. Liam squeezed my hand softly and led me to the room.

The door closed behind us and a short but bulky officer pointed at two chairs. We sat down, and he sat across from us. "My name is Officer Stevens. We only have a few questions." Liam nodded, but I merely stared. I didn't want to do that. I wanted to go and grieve for the one person I could call a friend.

"I'd like to start with you, Christina. Please describe tonight's events." Officer Stevens said. I didn't even bother asking how he had found out my name. "Kelli wasn't at school today. I had seen her yesterday, but she was so nervous. I was concerned, but I decided it was nothing. But when I got home, there was a note on my front door. It said 'Help me'.

"I didn't know who had wrote it. So I went inside and my boyfriend called me, and he said he had a surprise. We talked for a few minutes, and finally I realized he had done something horrible. He told me I was right when it was about Kelli. He said she was where she always was. I got nervous, even though he meant she was home.

"It was Kelli's hand writing. I got into my car and drove over there. I saw someone in the backyard. I don't know who. It was either Daniel, my boyfriend, or Tony, Kelli's boyfriend. He abused her. So I went into the house. I got a knife from the kitchen. I thought there was someone in the house who wanted to kill me, too.

"I was searching when I heard someone come in the house. I hid in the closet with the knife. It was only Liam. He told me he had come to find me and I told him to check Kelli's brother's room for anything or anyone. I checked Kelli's room.. and I found her." I finished quickly before my voice could crack.

Officer Stevens was a fast writer. He had a full summary of what I had just said on an evidence sheet when he turned to Liam. "Your side now, Liam?" he asked, getting out another sheet. Liam's version was shorter. "I was in San Fransisco getting tests done today.Christina called and she sounded upset or scared, I wasn't sure.

"So I went to her house when I got home, but she wasn't home. She had told me Daniel was calling when she was on the phone with me. She's terrified of him, by the way. He abuses her, too. Anyway, I got nervous. I decided to check the two people's houses she'd most likely be at: Kelli or Daniel's.

"I checked Kelli's house first. Her car was there, so I went inside. The house was so quiet. But I went looking. I heard her breathing heavily in the closet. She cut me in self defense, but I don't blame her. The last thing that happened was me hearing her scream when she looked in Kelli's room. She was dead."

Officer Stevens was writing again. About a minute later, he looked up. "And that's why we found a knife on the ground in the kitchen?" he asked. I nodded. I had thrown it in the kitchen when leaving. I got scared for a moment. Were they going to pin the death on me? "The blood on the knife was fresher on the knife and there wasn't enough on it to be the murder weapon, we were curious." he told me.

I let out a sigh of relief and leaned against Liam. He stroked my hair absentmindedly. "One more thing. What are Daniel and Tony's last names?" Officer Stevens asked. "Daniel Richards and Tony Martin." I replied, my voice dry. All I wanted was to get out of this station. Maybe to have Liam hold me for a few hours until I could sleep.

The officer rose. "Please, wait here for a moment." He left the room and Liam and I were alone. "I'm so sorry for all this going on. You don't deserve it." Liam said softly. His hand was absentmindedly playing in my hair. "Thanks, Liam, but I probably do deserve it." It had slipped before I could stop it.

"What are you talking about?" Liam demanded. I wondered if he meant to sound so hot when he was angry. "I'm not a good person, Liam. You should realize that." I said after a short pause. He opened his mouth to retort when the officer came back. "It appears Daniel Richards and Tony Martin left the state tonight." he said gravely. My worst nightmare was officially coming true.
