Chapter 19

Monday morning came slower than normal. Liam had to go to San Diego for.. tests. I choked on the thought. Daniel came back home, but I hadn't seen nor talked to him in over a week. I walked into school more depressed than ever and all he did was smile at me. He didn't even say hi.

My grades were slipping dramatically. I had managed A's and B's in all my classes , but after missing so much due to my hospital visits and my simply not paying attention, they were closer to C's and D's. I could imagine Liam's disapproving face when I got my report card. It almost made me smile.

What I found strange, though, was Kelli not being at school. I had seen her on Sunday while at church, but she seemed distant. More terrified than even me. I knew Tony was still hurting her, but even I didn't act so nervous and jittery in public.

I got out of school and went straight to my car. Daniel watched me menacingly, but stayed put by his car, as he was talking deeply with Tony. What were they talking about? I couldn't even guess. Still, it made me nervous. I climbed into my car and checked my phone. No messages. Liam must still be taking his tests.

Making my way home, I frowned at the sight of a note hanging on the front of the front door. Reading it, it had two simple words written on it: 'Help me.' My heart rate picked up for some unknown reason. I was getting ready to bolt to my car when my phone vibrated.

"Hello?" I asked. "Hi, love." Liam's voice came. I almost dropped in relief. "Hi! Are you okay?" I asked hurridly, unlocking the front door to find out who's hand writing this was. "I'm fine, Christina." he didn't continue on. I could hear the pain in his voice that had been in there for a while, and it made my heart break. Like always.

I put the phone on speaker and went to pull a sweatshirt on. "Are you okay? You sound exhausted." Liam asked curiously. I could hear the wind rushing over the phone. Evidently he was driving home from San Fransisco. I glanced at the note, wondering if I should tell him. "Uh, yeah. Everything's fine." I lied.

I heard Liam sigh. "I'm not dying yet, you know, love. You can still tell me things." he said. I bit my lip as a new call came in. Daniel. "Hey, Liam, I'll call you back. He's.. he's calling." I stammered. I didn't have to see his face to see his expression harden. "Okay. I'm calling back in ten minutes." he told me. "Okay." I replied quickly, and transferred to Daniel's call.

"Hi, babe." I greeted, drumming my fingers on the table. I was still staring at the note. 'Help me'. Who had written this? "Hi, Christina." Daniel said. I could hear the malice in his voice. "Just wondering.. have you gotten my little surprise yet?" he asked me smoothly. I could practically feel the air leave my lungs. "What surprise?" I whispered.

I could feel Daniel's evil smirk. "Oh, you haven't yet? But it's so great. You should really find it." he said innocently. I still wasn't breathing. "What did you do, Daniel?" I asked, deadly quiet. There was no anger in my voice, only fear and dread. "Didn't you get our little note?" Daniel asked softly. I froze, glancing at the note once more. Kelli.

"Where's Kelli?" I asked. My breathing had come back, but quicker than normal. I clung to the table for support. "Ah, babe. That's where it gets complicated." Daniel replied. White hot anger filled me. "Where is she, dammit!" I yelled into the phone. My only friend. What had he done with her?

"She's where she always is." Daniel said. I could tell he was enjoying himself. Home. Kelli was always at home. How was that... Oh, God. Pressing end on the call, I grabbed my keys and ran towards my car.

It was barely four, and there was barely any traffic. I sat in front of Kelli's house for a good ten minutes. Suddenly there was a flash of black in the bushes in the backyard. Ducking under the steering wheel, I stayed another fifteen. Finally I lifted my head back up. There was no one around, not even her parents.

Carefully and slowly opening my car door, I stepped out into the cool, late October evening. I crept up to the front door. There was absolutely no noise coming from any place in the house. It was too quiet. Almost eerie.

Half terrified but half bold, I grabbed a knife from the kitchen. No one was in the living room or kitchen, which completed the downstairs. There was still absolutely noise. I started creeping upstairs towards the bedrooms. I was scouting her parent's bedroom when I heard the front door open. I froze and ran towards the closet faster than I'd ever run before.

I didn't breathe, and didn't move. Who was here? Was this it? Was I going to die? Or maybe it was Kelli. Maybe Daniel was lying. Maybe he was tricking me, getting me all worked up for no reason. I heard them creeping around the house, obviously looking for someone. My heart wanted to explode from how fast ot was beating due to how scared I was.

Suddenly, just like that, the closet door was being yanked open. I said nothing and just swiped with my knife. "Ow, Christina!" a familiar voice groaned. I opened my eyes and Liam stood there. He was in a gray T-Shirt, that he was in the process of removing to wrap his hand with. There was a five inch gash there. "Oh, God, I'm sorry!" I burst out softly.

Then I punched him in his good arm. It probably wasn't good to do that to someone with kidney failure, but I was mad. "You almost scared me to death, Liam!" I hissed, my voice never raising. I didn't know who or what was in this house still. Liam narrowed his eyes, now shirtless. I tried not to let that distract me.

"I was worried! You weren't home, and you were either here or Daniel's! I'm glad I checked here first!" he said, also talking softly. "Now, what the hell is going on? Why are you in the bloody closet?" I cleaned off the knife with my black jeans and looked at him. "Daniel said he left me a surprise." I whispered.

Liam's mouth was in a straight line, a complete poker face. "Can you look in her brothers room across the hall? I'm going to check Kelli's room." I told him. He considered this for a moment. "Keep that knife with you." he finally decided. I nodded, and scooted past him. His hand briefly touched my hip as I passed.

I looked up again and he kissed me shortly but passionately. "I'm sorry for snapping at you." I muttered. Liam almost, but didn't, smiled. "Same to you." he whispered. He kissed my forehead one more time and let me go.

I crept down the hallway after watching Liam go into Kelli's younger brother's bedroom. I had a feeling nothing would be in their bedrooms, though. If anything was anywhere, I was heading towards it right now in Kelli's bedroom.

The door to her room was cracked, which was unlike her. I pushed it open. It took me two seconds. I screamed louder than I ever had before, a blood curtling sob. I heard pounding on the floor behind me and Liam was beside me. "NO!" I screamed. I couldn't take my eyes off of Kelli's dead body, laying in a puddle of fresh red blood.
