Chapter 16
Beep. Beep. Beep...
Was I dead? What was that noise? My eyes fluttered open, but was blinded by the bright lights a second later. Where was I? I looked around, not moving my neck, only my eyes. The walls were white, the cieling was white, everything was white. Was this what Heaven looked like?
I became aware of the pain in my right arm, and looked to see an assortment of needles pumping fluids into my arm. My mind was blank. What had happened? Obviously I wasn't dead. I pinched my eyes shut, seeing if this maybe was a dream. I opened them again. It wasn't a dream. I looked around again, to see an empty room. Why wasn't a nurse coming to see how I was? I was awake and concious.
I sighed. I used my index finger to press the assistance button on the remote beside my bed. A minute late a small blonde nurse came bouncing into the room. "Oh, you're awake! How do you feel, Miss Young?" she asked. Her voice was annoying, but I didn't say so aloud.
"I feel fine." I said shortly. My mind was racing a hundred miles an hour. Flashes of memories kept flittering across my mind. I could remember my whole life, except there was a blank spot. The last thing I could remember was seeing Liam in the bakery. What had happened after that?
The blonde nurse produced a bottle of water from a fridge on the other side of the room and handed it to me. "So happy you've woken up. The same guy has been here for these past few days. Seemed very worried, he'll be glad you're concious." she said, and finally she walked out of the room.
I lay there for a few minutes until something hit me. The nurse had said someone had been there the past few days. Days? What had happened so badly that I had been unconcious for a few days? I tried to sit up in bed, only to realize I was too dizzy. I laid back down right as the door opened.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around me before I saw who it was. "Thank, God." Liam whispered, his voice cracking. "You don't even know.. Oh, God, when I found you laying there.. I thought you were gone." he went on. I could barely understand him. "Can someone tell me what actually happened?" I said, slightly annoyed.
Liam stood back and ran a hand through his brown hair, staring at me sadly. "You don't even remember?" he asked softly. I just stared at him in a way of saying no. Liam sat in a chair beside my bed. "You tried to kill yourself, Christina." he said flatly. This was a big shock for me. "And, I found you on the floor. I think you hit your head maybe.. but you weren't reacting to the blow because of your overdose on pills." he said softly.
I said nothing. Reaching gingerly to the back of my head, I felt a huge knot there. I definitly had hit my head, apparently unknowingly. Liam took my hand and traced his thumb on my knuckles. I sighed at the touch. "Why, Christina?" he asked me quietly. I closed my eyes, trying to remember why.
The memory all came flashing back. Running out of the bakery away from Liam. Shaking the pills into my hand. Taking them. Falling backwards, apparently unaware that I hit my head. And finally, laying on the ground as I died.
I felt tears burning in my eyes and I opened them again to see a tear sliding down Liam's cheek. I brought my hand up shakily and wiped it away. Liam looked up at me, and I felt miserable that I was causing this. "I wanted this to go away," I whispered to him. "Please, never think that." he said, pressing a kiss to my forehead.
"I just hate myself." I moaned. There was no reply for a few minutes. "You shouldn't." Liam replied.I finally got the courage up to ask the obvious question, "Where's Daniel?" Liam shrugged. "He came by the day you were here, and the nurses promised that they'd have you call him once you woke up. He hasn't come back since." he told me. Shows how much he cared.
"Thank you for coming and staying." I told him. Liam smiled a breath taking smile. "You're welcome, love." The door opened and the blonde nurse walked in. "Liam, they need you down the hall. And Christina, it's time for your medicine." she said bubbily. "Why do they need you?" I questioned Liam. A somewhat forced smile came to his lips and he said, "Nothing. I'll see you soon."
I decided I should call Daniel after Liam left. He was at football practice and didn't answer, which I was perfectly fine with. I left him a voice mail telling him I was okay and then I sat there waiting for Liam to come back.
When he did, he had a teddy bear and a McDonalds bag in his hands. "They're letting you feed me this?" I exclaimed, smiling. Liam put a finger to his lips. "It won't hurt." he said, handing me the stuffed animal. Opening the bag, he handed me a chicken sandwich and some fries. I accepted eagerly, apparently having not eaten in days.
"I left Daniel a voicemail." I said in between huge bites of the sandwich. Liam watched me curiously as if he'd never seen anyone eat like I was. "I'll leave in a little while. Wouldn't want him to know I've been around." he said after a moment. I frowned but agreed. I had really wanted Liam to stay. I could live without seeing Daniel.
Twenty minutes later Liam kissed my forehead and walked out of the room. No less than ten minutes later did Daniel walk in the room. He sat down in the chair Liam had recently vacated and stared at me for a few seconds. "So you had a concussion?" he finally said. Oh. They hadn't told him about the pills. I nodded and said, "I fell and hit my head."
Daniel nodded slowly, leaning back in his chair. "I missed you." he said. I watched him carefully. "I asked the doctors if anyone had been here. They said you'd only showed up once." I said. He shrugged. "I was busy." he replied carelessly. My mouth went dry as thoughts struck me. "Busy doing what?" I asked.
An evil smirk appeared on Daniel's lips, which frightened me. "Let's just say I've been planning things with some guys." he told me. My mouth would've dropped open if it hadn't been for my common sense. "Planning what?" I asked, terrified.
Daniel rose to his full height, looking down at me. The smirk had not gone away. He bent down to where his mouth was level with my ear. "Just watch out, Christina." he whispered. His voice sent shivers down my spine, and not the good kind of shivers. And then he was gone.
