Chapter 9
I put the car back in park once I pulled into the driveway around four. Mom and Dad left a note saying they went out to eat with some clients, so I was alone for the evening. It wasn't like I minded. I loved being alone. I went into the kitchen and poured a glass of water. I realized how hungry I was. I guess this was normal after you run out of a restraunt before ordering.
I decided to call Kelli. She picked up after two rings. "What happened?" No hello or anything. Apparently she always expected the worst. "Daniel is literally going to kill me." I said. I could hear Kelli move around and I heard the creak of a matress, indicating she had sat down.
"What happened, babe?" she asked me. I sat down at the kitchen table, put the phone on speaker, and wrapped my hands around my glass. "I.. spent a few minutes with someone." I said, choosing my words carefully. There was silence for a moment as Kelli thought. "The british one?" she asked. "His name is Liam, but yes." I told her.
More silence. "And.. you just.. talked?" she asked me. I didn't reply. "So.. that's why you think Daniel will kill you?" Kelli guessed. I shrugged, then remembered she couldn't see me. "Not if he doesn't find out." I replied. Kelli sighed. "Okay, Christina. Just.. remember what I said about Tony and Daniel and all of them. They'll get violent still." she said, her voice sincere.
Her theory began making more and more sense, but it still was unlikely. "I'm not an idiot. I know they'll get violent." I told her. Another call started coming through, and seeing the ID, my heart sank. "Daniel's calling me." I said softly to Kelli, who was still on the phone. "Are you going to answer?" she asked me. "I'll call you later." I muttered, and hit end on her call and decline on Daniel's.
I put my phone on silent, shaking slightly and got up from the table. There was tea bags in the cabinet, so I got out a pot and poured some hot water in it. While it was boiling, I left my phone in the kitchen and went to lay down on the couch, noticing how badly my forehead was throbbing.
Why did it smell so weird in here? I apparently had dozed off, I shut my eyes tighter, trying to convince myself I was dreaming. The smell didn't go away, The tea. Swearing loudly, I jumped up to find the water overflowing and smoiking. Scorching water was all over the stove, and started dripped off and was on the floor.
Not meaning to, I stepped into a small puddle of it and screamed. My foot started turning a horrible red color, and tears started sliding down my cheeks. I turned off the stove, got an oven mit, and grabbed the pot. I dumped it down the sink, and a billow of hot air gushed out of it, hitting me, very painfully in my face.
I got a towel and started wiping up the boiling water, which was a huge mistake. In no time I had suffered first or second degree burns on my foot and hands. And it hurt. Badly. I grabbed my car keys and phone, which had mist on it from the heat in the kitchen, and walked out the front door very hurridly to my car.
I saw Liam's car coming down the street as soon as I got into my Sedan. I screeched out of my diveway, and using the tips of my fingers, steered the car down the street. Looking in my rearview mirror, I saw his car following me.
The hospital was half an hour away from my house, and with the traffic, it wasn't until almost five thirty I pulled into the hospital parking lot. I heard a car door slam right beside mine, and Liam came running over to me. "What did you do?!" he exclaimed, reaching for my wrists and examining my hands that by now were covered in irritated blisters. He saw the tip of my foot sticking out of my sandal and his mouth dropped.
"Care to explain?" he asked, letting me lean on him as I hopped on my good foot into the front doors. "Fell asleep while some water was on on the stove." I muttered. His strong arm pushed the door of the hospital open. A nurse took one look at my hands and sent me into a small room with ointments and bandages lining the walls.
Liam sat in the corner in a chair and crossed his arms. "See, you wouldn't have been home and hungry if you would've ran out of the restraunt." he told me. I narrowed my eyes at him. "Your sister was right. I do have a boyfriend." I snapped. Liam raised an eyebrow. "One that you hate? I didn't think that counted." he said.
I opened my mouth to retort but couldn't think of anything. He was right. What could I say? "You have to understand, Liam. There's no way he's letting me go, and one day, he might just decide to get rid of me. Make it look like an accident." I said slowly. Liam's expression softened and in a heartbeat he was beside me.
"Why don't you just let me handle it?" he asked. "Because I've only known you a week." I pointed out. Liam gave me a look that said "haha, stop trying to be funny". He then sighed. "Just.. if something happens again, I'm going to do something." he told me, a look on his face that said he had never been more serious.
I didn't know what to reply. "Do you remember when you were crying in front of my house a few days ago?" Liam whispered, his hand rubbing my upper arm. I nodded. "And do you remember what I said?" Liam asked. I nodded again. "Because I think I just found the girl of my dreams." I recited. The words had been permanently drilled into my brain.
This time it was Liam's turn to nod. "Do you think I was lying?" he asked me. I shook my head. "I'd hope not." I answered truthfully. "Exactly." Liam said as he tucked a piece of hair behind my ear. I smiled. "Thanks." I whispered. Liam returned my smile, and I couldn't help but sigh. He was perfect, and it was unfair. Why? Because I knew I probably wouldn't be able to have him.
