Chapter 4
The next morning I could barely move.
My legs and arms and torso were stiff, and my blood was pounding against my skull. I moaned and, very carefully, rolled over onto my stomach. It was 7:00. Half an hour until the bell for first period rang.
Not wanting to make a scene, I pushed myself out of bed, ignoring my muscles screaming in protest. I put on a T-Shirt and shorts, not caring that they could see my wounds. I was in a car accident, as far as the kids at school knew.
I told Mom and Dad good-bye and started my short but painful walk to school. I saw several other teenagers leaving their driveways as well.
"Christina? What happened?" a shrill voice suddenly exclaimed from behind me. Kelli, who had a lime green sundress on and had her blonde hair pulled up in a high ponytail, was closing in the distance between us.
"I got into a wreck last night," I lied smoothly, hoisting my book bag higher on my shoulder. Even that small movement hurt.
"If my parents ask, I hit a tree near your house," I said softly, turning away. But I couldn't outrun Kelli.
I couldn't even walk four steps before she bombarded me. "What do you mean? You weren't at my house last night!" she said, looking dumbfounded.
I sighed as I kept walking, her right beside me. "I know, but my parents... they think I was all right?" I told her, trying but not succeeding to keep the irritation out of my voice.
Suddenly Kelli yanked my arm, forcing me to stay still. "I may be the only one who sees it, but I know Daniel is hurting you! You have to tell someone, Christina!" she said quietly, apparently not wanting to bring attention to us.
I met her gaze. "I don't know what you're talking about," I whispered through clenched teeth, then continued the walk to school.
Daniel's car was not in it's spot. My heart leapt with joy when I saw this. I checked my phone, and saw he had texted me.
Daniel: People at the airport wanted $50 extra bucks to fly the charter plane a few more hours to the San Diego airport. They landed in a small one about 50 miles from here. Went to pick them up, so I won't be at school today. Be good. I mean it.
I ignored the threat at the end. I was ecstatic he wasn't here.
I almost skipped into school, but stopped when my knees threatened to give out. By 7:20, ten minutes before the bell, I was in my seat in English. Five minutes later Liam walked in. The classroom was still basically empty when he sat down beside me, and a wall of depression came crashing down on me. I almost, for one second, had believed Liam was my boyfriend, and I had been so happy to see him today.
"I saw his car wasn't here," Liam's familiar voice said, filling me with warmth I liked but hated at the same time.
I knew there was only one solution: push him away. "
Mhm," I replied, acting as if there hadn't been a deep connection between us the night before. As if I hadn't fantasized about his lips on mine all night in my dreams.
Liam didn't look up from his homework as he said, "I assume you're happy."
Push him away, Christina, push him away.
"Not at all. He's my boyfriend, I'm upset he's not here," I said.
Liam raised an eyebrow and looked at me. "I hope you know I don't believe you for one second," he told me.
"I don't care," I replied with a false coollness in my voice.
"Quiet everyone, quiet down. Pass up your homework," Mrs. James loud voice came from the front of the room, and there was a rumble of paper being passed in all directions.
