A bit of a serious chapter for the day, in honor of Memorial Day, established 154 years ago in 1868. (Here in the United States specifically)

Ash's POV

As is customary on Memorial Day, the President of the United States, or someone they designated will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown. It is a truly humbling experience and breathtaking to witness.

My father had done this multiple times over the years, but we also knew that this may be the last time he was able too.

As we arrived at Arlington for the ceremony, Dad, Alex and I were ushered away to discuss the presentation, while the remainder of our family was shown to the gallery.

We were ushered into the room, the commander of The Old Guard, saluted my father, welcoming us. His eyes fell to me and the whole unit snapped to attention.

"At ease, gentlemen." my father said.

"General Summers, we are honored that you and your daughters could join us today."

"Col. McGuire and Maj. Mason, it's a pleasure to meet you both."

We both nodded and smiled.

I watched my Father and the commander walk away to chat, as Alex and I looked around the room. These men and women dedicate their lives to guarding these remains. We spoke briefly with a few of them, exchanging pleasantries.

Suddenly, I felt something wrap around my leg, and as I looked down, I saw Rose looking up at me smiling.

"Rose, baby, what are you doing here??"

"I asked the commander if I could include Rose, Capri, and Erin..." my Father said.

"Dad."

"Ashlyn, I know this may be the last time I am able to do this, and today, I want my girls to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity."

"What about Sydney and Lauren? Wait, where are Capri and Erin?"

"They all declined. They said they would prefer to watch from the gallery."

I smiled down at Rose, as she clung to my leg. She was enthralled with everyone in the room, and they all smiled at her.

"Rosie, are you sure you want to do this? You have to be totally quiet, and cannot move."

She nodded her little head, "I can do it Ashy. I has to stand between you and Poppi, and sawute and be quiet as a mouse."

"Ok, baby girl."

"General, it's time."

Scarlett's POV

Everyone has seen videos of the changing of the guard at Arlington, but to see it in person, is truly breathtaking.

Normally, media are not allowed, but today being Memorial Dad, a select few are allowed for the celebration. They are kept at a distance l, so as not to disturb.

We have been ushered down front, so that we could see the ceremony. Looking around at the people in attendance, The President and his wife are in attendance, along with several other political figures.

The Guard began the ceremony, and I watched as the new Sentry made their way out with the commander. Wait, that's my Ash.

I was floored. Normally this is done by the commander of The Guard, but today, it seems my girlfriend is taking the reins.

I watch in absolute awe as she goes through the motions, and it takes my breath away. I'm so insanely proud of her. I can only hope Rose got to see it too. When Robert asked if she could be a part of the ceremony, I was shocked. To be included in something so important, I didn't expect my shy child to actually do it.

As the changing of the guard finishes, my eyes fall on Ashlyn as she makes her way off. Her movement is crisp and precise.

The commander makes his way out, his choice booming as he makes the announcements. We turn to see a Sentry holding the wreath, followed by Robert, Alex, Ashlyn, and little Rose.

Robert looks so proud, Alex and Ashlyn, face both stone cold and focused. Rose holds Robert's hand as she walks between them, smiling from ear to ear.

As the wreath is presented, I watch all four salute as Taps begins to play. I feel the tears as they start to fall. As the last of Taps fads, we watch them turn, making their way back inside. Shortly after, we were escorted away from the gallery, and reunited.

As we stood outside, waiting for them to join us, I heard my little girl. "Mommy, Mommy, did you see me?!?"

"Yes, baby girl! You did so good, and I'm so proud of you!!" I said, lifting my daughter and hugging her close.

"She did fantastic!!" I heard Ash say as she appeared.

I put Rose down, and she runs straight to Robert, who lifts her in his arms. Rose wraps her little arms around his neck, kissing his nose. The sight absolutely warmed my heart.

"I think you lost your title of being the favorite." Ash whispered in my ear, as she wrapped her arms around me.

"I think so too," I replied smiling.

We made our way back to the waiting cars that would whisk us back to the airport. As we all loaded into the car, I couldn't help but think again, how lucky I am.

A/N:

NightOwl: As a teen, I had the opportunity to be there when my school presented a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown and saw the changing of the guard. It was one of the most humbling experiences in my life. If you ever visit Arlington National Cemetery, I highly recommend it.

HedaLok: As a teen, I also had the opportunity to be there in person, not for a Memorial Day ceremony, but for a wreath laying. It was truly incredible to see. --- Coming from a Military family, I grew up knowing the difference between Veteran's day and Memorial Day. On this day, we honor those that have served our country and have fallen. You never wish a service member a 'Happy Memorial Day', as this is a day to remember those brothers and sisters in arms that have died. It is truly a day of remembrance.
