Day in and day out, paperwork seems to be the biggest part of the day

Day in and day out, paperwork seems to be the biggest part of the day. Chasing trails to lead to the suspects. It is what I live for.

Being a Detective is something I have wanted since I was a young child. Growing up, Mom and Dad got me all the games and mystery books. It always made me strive to finish and find out who it was in the books or to beat the game to find out.

As soon as I could, I joined the academy and worked hard to get to the stage I am at. For me it is helping to protect the innocent lives in the way I know how. It is what I am good at and never stop until the one responsible is behind bars.

Scanning through the file, I make sure everything is there from the case I just finished. Reading over my notes, making sure nothing is left out. I move the file over so the the clerk will pick it up from the container for it to move to the next person.

The suspect we just chased down, came in easily. It was honestly something different, as the perp came in on his own.

That is a rare event but with all the news media to help once we got a clear image of his face, he just walked right in. The Chief tried not to laugh when we got called to the front for that.

Made for some extremely easy paperwork. Although, his sentencing will probably be lighter than if we had to actually chased him down.

At least is just one less thief on the streets. It was the fact he was stealing chips from gas stations is what gets me. Never believed to be armed during it all.

With a shake of my head, I stand from my desk. With a look around many of the Officers seem to be out on patrol with the time of day.

Walking into the break room, I fill up my cup of coffee.

"Woo, Gatlin! Heard about your suspect." Brit laughs.

He has been a good friend of mine since becoming a cop. We have worked several cases together since being Detectives and I couldn't ask for a better partner when needed.

"Yeah, that was something else." I nod.

"To bad they won't all do that."

I shake my head, with a smirk. "Then they wouldn't need Detectives."

"True. Do you have a new case already?"

"I was fixing to look through the files and see where I can help out. Cheif has not put me on one that needs immediate attention yet."

"I got a case that could use an extra set of eyes."

"Lead the way. You know I will look over it with you."

I follow Brit to his desk as he sits in the chair. I move to mine opposite of him, and take a seat in my chair.

Brit hands the file over. I flip it open instantly.

"It is over the string of car jackings." Brit sighs.

I read over how many they believe to be involved and my eyes go wide.

"Is this number of nine people being suspects?"

Brit simply nods.

"If we can find where the cars are being taken too than it will pretty much be the jackpot for us. The thieves are smart though. They are only taking aged cars that don't have the computer tracking techonology but of high dollar value."

"Does there seem to be a area that has the most jackings?" I skim over the notes and don't see that.

"I be damn. Not five minutes and you're at it."

"Nah, man. Just wondering if you have tried making that connection or not." I hand the file back over.

"I will get to work on that and see if I find any connection. Thanks man!"

"Anytime." I take a drink of my coffee.

"Gatlin. My office three minutes." Cheif calls out from his doorway.

I stand from my desk once again and make my way to the Chief's office. Because anyone can know, he means now and not in actually three minutes.

I walk in his office and he is already sitting at his chair again.

"Take a seat. So, the one that just walked in early today has already spoke with the DA and will be getting a lesser sentencing."

I nod my head, because I figured that might happen.

"In return for not only turning himself in but because he is leading the us straight to a higher one we have been after for a few years. The guy that he is giving the name to has been involved with a string of armed robberies to any small bank over the state."

Now my mind is blown.

"It will close a few cases up if we get the perp. So it is good work having the news media putting the picture of his face up for him to turn in like he done."

"Thank you Chief."

"Now, onto the next assignment. Right now the biggest thing is the car jacking that Brit has. So for now work with him in solving that case. If something else turns up I will put you pull you and place you on it. As you know cases come up all the time."

"Of course, I will get on it more with Brit."

I walk back to my desk and go over the case more with Brit. We work over theories until it is time to go.

One of the Officers has been at his desk most of the day and seems to be getting flustered. One of the downfalls is we don't get answers quickly.

"You got this man. Don't let the nerves or anger get to you." I pat his shoulder on my way by.

"Thanks Gatlin."

I finally make it to my truck and my phone rings. Pulling it out to see it is Mom.

"Hey Mom. I just got off."

"Another late day on a case." Mom chuckles lightly.

"Your sister is coming over tonight for dinner. Your Dad and I both want you to come over too, have a family dinner together. I know you need a home cooked meal."

"I will be on my way there. That does sounds amazing tonight."

"Great! Both of my babies will be home for dinner."

"See you soon Mom." I smile while hanging up.

I am twenty-seven and she still calls me her baby. Guess in her eyes I will always be.

Starting up the truck, I head to my parents house instead of mine.
