"Shane! Shane!" Rick yelled running through the school hall way. Shane looked up from his conversation with a few school mates seeing the concern in Rick's face, the fear in his voice.

"What?"

"It's Daryl." Rick replied grabbing Shane's hand and pulling him towards the boys locker room. Shane narrowed his eyes and panicked as he followed Rick. "Come on faster."

Shane ran after him quickly till they opened the locker room door and burst in. Daryl was crying his lip busted and his eye was bruised. Shane raced to him quickly dropping to his knees beside Daryl concern etched in his face.

"Oh Daryl what happened?"

"My..my dad." Daryl sobbed falling into Shane's arms. The fifteen year old was shaking, Shane snarled, Will Dixon was one terrible man and an even worse father. "He was drunk and angry...I. I was headed off to school when he saw the track jacket. Be..beat me for wearing another mans jacket.. h.. I'm sorry Shane he burnt it.. I don't have it anymore I'm sorry Shane."

"Daryl please don't apologize, Daryl this isn't your fault don't act like that. I'm so sorry." Daryl cried harder as he held him tightly, he just wanted to feel safe. He couldn't go back home he knew that. "Why don't you come home with me tonight? I'll call my mom and make sure but I'm sure you can come home with me."

"Shane.. I couldn't.. if my dad knew and then found out.. he'd kill us.."

"Daryl you're not going back there." Shane replied kissing his forehead as he ran his thumb over his bruises. "Never again."

"I couldn't crash at your home... your parents wouldn't want me to stay.. do they even know.. do they even know you're gay."

"Yes Dare, and I've told them about you." Shane smiled pecking his nose trying to avoid the cuts on his lips. "You know Rick's dad and mine would take your old man in."

"If he gets out or doesn't get booked he would find me.. find us. We can't.. we can't."

"Daryl just come home with me," Shane begged. "My parents are going to let you come home with me. The worst that will happen is they will make you sleep in the couch because of us being together."

Daryl looked him over and then moved his eyes to Rick thankful the older teen had brought Shane to him. "Fi..fine if you don't think your momma will be mad."

"You know she wouldn't. She's been begging to meet you Daryl. So has my father."

Daryl held him tightly as he tried not to cry more, he didn't know how Shane could be so kind to him. He didn't know how he could be with the life he had. The track record of his family. Daryl had to use the school showers to stay clean, he did yard work for the teachers in exchange for school supplies. He worked for neighbors and his friends parents in order to afford school clothes and even had to do more work for the school to have school lunches.

Yet the star track player loved him.

Daryl stood up slowly as Shane helped him to his feet. "I'll call my mom, but you're coming home with me regardless of what she says."

Daryl blushed deep red but was thankful he wanted to help him. Rick and Shane walked with him from class to class even if they had to rush from one end of the school to the other. Daryl walked with them happily and Shane made sure to give him a small kiss before he went to class each and every time. Daryl tugged his back-pack on and walked with Shane to his home. "Mom, dad we are home."

Shane's mother Jean raced from the kitchen with some fresh made cookies. The moment she saw Daryl's busted lip and bruised eye her heart sank. "Honey, is this your boyfriend?"

"Yes ma'." Shane smiled. "You're okay with him crashing here right?"

"Yes of course, well hello dear. It's so good to meet you finally, Shane's told me a little bit about what it's like at home. My husband ca-."

"Please don't it will only make it worse." Daryl said softly side stepping closer into Shane's comforting hold. "I'm sorry miss I just don't want to be hurt more or put Shane in danger. If my daddy knew who put him behind bars he would make some calls and people would get hurt even if he's behind bars."

Her eyes softened seeing Daryl was just trying so hard to keep people he cared about safe. "Will your father care you didn't come home?" She asked handing both boys cookies.

"No mam." Daryl smiled. "He probably won't expect me to show my face around for at least two weeks... last time he beat me I stayed away for a month and when I came home he said he was surprised to see me so early."

Jean bit her lip seeing Daryl eat part of the cookie and then hand the rest to Shane. Shane smiled softly finishing it knowing Daryl wasn't used to eating a lot, Shane tried his damndest to bring him meals from home so he had lunch and the school did their best when Daryl worked for them to give him something but Daryl wasn't used to a full belly most of the time. Jean was going to change that for the poor kid however. "Dad home?" Shane asked as he directed Daryl to the table so they could work on some homework.

"Not right now, he was called into work. Some unruly teenager stole some pills from a local gas station. Got caught."

Daryl looked up and narrowed his eyes. "You know their name?"

"No sorry sweet heart." Jean said setting the cookies down for them if they wished to eat them. Daryl nibbled his lip.

"Do you have a phone I can borrow?" Daryl asked raising an eyebrow.

Jean nodded and handed him her phone. Shane watched Daryl as he dialed his brother number. "Hello?" A rough voice responded.

"It's Daryl.." Daryl replied as he got up and walked away for a moment. "I'm hanging at Shane's for a while, dad beat me up again."

"Damn that man, are you okay?"

"Fine big brother, not as bad as it's been before."

Jean looked up at the admittance and frowned, Shane lowered his eyes as his mother gave him a stern look. "You should have brought him here when you two started dating." She muttered.

"Sorry mom..." Shane whispered lowering his eyes.

She frowned as Daryl said bye to his brother, he honestly thought he was the one who got picked up. He was happy he hadn't, some days he wished he could move in with Merle but he just crashed on the couch of a drug buddy he had till he made enough to get his own place. Daryl didn't want to make his brother worry more about him than he did.

"Thank you." Daryl said handing her the phone. Shane squeezed his hand when he saw the look on his mothers face.

"You're never going back home alright?"

Daryl looked up. "I couldn't ask you to do that for me mam." He said. "I'll be okay miss."

"No, you're Shane's boyfriend and a part of our family. So you're going to stay okay? We have a guest room we will set up for you, as long as you and Shane behave I see no problem with it."

Daryl beamed in excitement, he was actually going to get to stay! He was so thankful for them that Shane's mother was going to let him stay, he was even more thankful that he wouldn't have to go back home. Shane threw his hands up in excitement cheering that he would get to see him all the time and know he was safe.
