I got dressed for a prom, hoping you'd see me anew
Take off the drunk goggles and see how I cared for you.
I tried so hard to stick up for a man I only saw
When everyone wanted to write you off and say you weren't worth all the fuss.
I could see you were funny and sweet and kind.
Why didn't you show others this amazing side?
You hide behind subtle smirks and muted gestures.
I'm standing right here but you seem miles away.
We used to whisper secrets and share glances
But you're sitting across from me and smiling away chances.
Talk to me. I'm here for you.
Look at me. I know you can see it, too.
Don't bring up the past without addressing the elephant in this room.
You Janie I want you to say it.
Just make your lips move.
You're hiding behind those gesticulations, again.
A chuckle here and there at somebody's expense.
You're the worst version of yourself right now
And I've seen your best.
When you find time to talk to me,
I hope it's to get something off your chest.
A weighty guilt for the hurt you caused.
We could've been fine if you had been honest.
Instead we make small talk and you touch me without that promise.
This moment may be big, but it's the last we're going to share.
You feel it like I do, but you'll run away scared.
Stand with who you came with and never leave their side.
It's funny 'cause I've got nothing
But at least I know I tried.
