Harley sighed as she looked around the bland apartment she was in.
Groaning, she got out of bed and headed towards the shower, wincing as she limped, her leg not fully healed.
She stood in the scorching hot water not moving, letting the water just run down her body.
Her and J had gotten into a huge fight which turned into the most physical damage he had ever done to her. Her hair was chopped short, resting just above her shoulders, she had a broken leg which was finally out of the cast, and a scar running down the back of her head.
He had left her and she finally had enough, going to Batman to get out of the city and start over as normal once again. J didn't like that and hunted her down.
She was lucky to even survive, Batman had rescued her and helped send her out of the city under a new identity as soon as possible.
He had been very vague but hinted that he would be watching her, if she started going back to her old ways she'd be back in Arkham.
The water switched off as she climbed out and dried herself off. She got dressed and flopped onto her couch, turning the TV on just to stare at it blankly.
She had gotten a job at a grocery store a little ways away and didn't do anything other than sleep and work.
Dragging herself up she grabbed her keys and walked out the door, starting the long walk to work.
It was already starting to get dark and chilly. She shivered as she wrapped her jacket around her more.
Everything seemed to have her on edge. The random screeching tires as people raced in the night, the sound of stray cats and dogs fighting, people standing in the shadows, even the sudden movement of plants in the wind. She was terrified of J finding her, even if it had been half a year since she left.
She felt empty. She didn't feel she had any purpose now that she had no one and was back to normal, or as normal as she could get.
She trudged her way to work and went straight to her register.
"Hi how are you?" She asked bittersweetly to the customer in front of her.
He shrugged. "Good. Can I use this?" He asked handing her a coupon. She nodded and took it.
She rung up his items and sighed as he walked away. It was going to be a slow night.
Her eyes flew over to look as she saw a flash of neon green out of the corner of her eye. Her breathing quickened.
Nothing. There was nothing. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes.
It's just my imagination.
She rung up yet another customer and sat back down after they walked away.
She was nodding off when all of a sudden her head shot up as she heard crazed laughter. Her head flew around trying to locate it until they landed on a coworker looking at their phone.
They laughed as they pressed buttons, assumingely playing a game.
She felt like she was going insane. Getting up, she went to find her manager and request to go home early. Her manager knew of her episodes, just not why.
"Hey, can I go home early? I'm having an episode and I'm freaking out..." She asked quietly as she stood in the office doorway.
Her manager glanced up then sighed. "Sure, but that's the third time this month, you're lucky it's slow right now." She said waving her off.
Harley nodded and ushered out, grabbing her jacket and booking it out the door, eager to get away from the store.
She was paranoid the whole time home, jumping at everything and whipping her head in every direction. She had never walked home so fast.
