I was practically dragging myself into my dorm complex. It was somewhere around 3 am and I was coming home from work. This was nothing new to me. Working odd hours just so I could make enough money to pay for my college tuition and somehow manage to feed myself. I needed to get to sleep, I had a lecture the next-well, that morning at 11. "Shit, sorry," a voice slurred as a body bumped into mine. "You're fine," I mumbled, digging out my keys. "What are you doing at this hour?" They asked. Looking up, I realized it was the boy who lived across the hall, Ashton. "Work," I gave him a weak smile. "That sucks," he muttered, tripping over the steps while I grabbed his arm to keep him stable. "Sorry," Ashton smiled lazily, holding onto the railing. I draped his arm around my shoulders to support his drunken body. Dammit, I wish our fucking elevator worked at times like these. The whole way up to the fifth floor Ashton was mumbling and playing with my hair. "You're so pretty." "I'm sorry, am I crushing you?" "Oh my god, you are so cUTE." "I really like your hair, it's so pretty." I stopped in front of our rooms, digging into Ashton's pockets to find his key. "Oh, Y/N you just grabbed my butt. Cheeky," Ashton giggled, twirling my hair around his finger. "Okay," I pushed the door open, gently shoving Ashton into the room. "Luke," he slurred, "I just saw Y/N, you know the pretty one that lives across the hall." Luke caught his roommate, steadying him. "Thanks for not letting him get hurt," Luke rolled his eyes. "Yeah, no problem," I giggled, "Night Ash." "Oh, bye Y/N," Ashton turned to wave at me as I unlocked my door. I smiled, shaking my head as Iet the door shut behind me.

There was a faint knocking on my door later on that morning. My roommate was already gone and I had been nestled in bed, deep in sleep. I rolled off the bed and padded across the cold linoleum floor to the door. "Morning sunshine," Ashton smiled at me brightly, holding out a cup of coffee for me. I raised an eyebrow at him, taking the cup. "Thanks, but um...why?" I asked, sitting back on my bed after letting him into my room. "For making sure I made it into my room last night and not letting me split my head open on the wall," he smiled at me, showing off his dimples, "And, I knew you had a class at 11 and you'd probably need it." Smiling at him softly, I set the cup down on my desk, "You got that right." "That;s what you get for taking McGuire's class," Ashton teased, leaning against the door frame. "I need that class to graduate, so I didn't have a choice," I sighed. "That's why you should've gone for a major in the arts. All the classes are fun," Ashton laughed, tucking his hand in his pocket. "Yeah, except I have no musical talent whatsoever," I groaned. "You can't be that bad," Ashton protested. "Trust me, Ashton, I'm shit at art. Unless you count music as art." "You sing?" Ashton looked impressed. "A little. I wish I could just become a famous rockstar and get out of here, but that's not how it works. Unfortunately." "Well, you'll have to let me hear you sing sometime," Ashton rocked back on his heels, " But for now I should probably let you get ready for your lecture. See you around." I nodded staring at the door after it shut behind him, silently wishing he'd come back.

I had always liked Ashton, not the same way a girl likes her lover, but platonically. He was a darling guy, the few times I had spoken to him. He and his friends could get pretty rowdy but they were fun company to have. Not to mention his laugh always brightened my day, I could hear him across the hall even when the doors were closed. And I could imagine the big grin that was spread across his face as he doubled over in laughter. Without him even realizing it, he made my college experience just a little bit better.

"Hey Y/N," Ashton's voice startled me, making me drop my keys. "Shit, Ash. You gave me a heart attack," I breathed, my heart beating quickly in my chest. "Sorry," He giggled. "What are you doing out here?" I looked down at him, sitting on the floor outside his room. It was 1 am and the hallway was dark. "Luke and his girl are in there," Ashton made a face, making me laugh. "I'm sorry," I paused, "Do you want to stay here? My roommate's gone for the weekend." Ashton hesitated. "Sorry, I know we don't really know each other, I just thought-you know-never mind," I turned back to unlock my door. "Wait, I'll stay, I just-I was just checking to see if they were done. But, yeah, I can stay over," Ashton stumbled over his words, pushing himself up off the floor. I bit back my laugh, gesturing for him to come in. I flicked on the light and closed the door behind me. "You can stay in her bed, I'm doing laundry tomorrow," I shrugged, pulling my had out of it's pony tail. "You think I don't shower?" Ashton pretend to be offended. "No," I panicked, "I just mean, she's probably not too keen on the idea of a stranger sleeping in her bed." "I'm teasing," Ashton laughed. "Oh," I stopped, "Okay, well I'm changing so don't look." I turned my back to him, pulling my shirt off and putting on something more comfortable. I wiggled my jeans off and tossed them to the corner, "Okay, I'm decent." Ashton was laying across my roommates bed, shirtless, with just his sweatpants on. "I'd say you look better than decent," he muttered, eyeing me. I didn't say anything, I just blushed in response. Attempting to hide behind my hair, I searched for my makeup wipes. "You're not used to compliments are you?" Ashton asked quietly. "Umm," I hesitated, wiping off my makeup, "No, not really," I admitted. "Well, that's what I'm here for," Ashton smiled down at his phone. "Are you flirting with me?" I bit my bottom lip, climbing into my bed. "What?" Ashton's voice raised an octave. I raised an eyebrow at him. "Maybe just a lil'," he admitted, his cheeks turning pink. "It's cute, Ash," I laughed. "I like when you call me that," he smiled, looking over at me. "Ash? Do your friends not call you Ash?" I asked, surprised. "No they do, I just like how it sounds when you say it," Ashton turned onto his back and stared up at the ceiling. I watched him for a moment, while he tried to conceal his smile. "Night, Ash," I said softly, turning onto my side. "Night Y/N.
