You were walking home from a terrible date when you first saw him again.

The neighbour that had captured your heart all those years ago that was then taken away to pursue his dream of being in a band.

He stood in front of his path with his parents talking to your mum over the white picket fence - that didn't symbolise a happy family unlike the stereotypes - when you came into his view under the flickering lamppost, your leather jacket wrapped around you like a blanket, your dress too short and your heels far too high.

"How was your date?" Your mum asks with a smile on her face and her arms crossed trying to keep a tiny amount of warmth in.

"It was good," You lie, it was horrible. He hadn't wanted to date you at all, you were seen as unavailable - always longing for someone that would never be yours - so he had set up a bet with his friends, so cliché, to see whether he could get you away from the little dream world in your mind where you were happy with someone else.

You didn't want to say yes - in fact you hadn't - your friend had jumped in and said yes because 'he was hot and interested', he was interested for the wrong reasons (the chance to win the large amount of money that everyone had put in a pot).

"Didn't he offer to drive you home?" Your mum frowns, "No manner's these days."

"I wanted to walk," You lie, you had walked out. His friend, his friend that was over-ran by guilt, had sat down in his place when he had gotten up to go the toilet and told you the story, rubbed your arm up and down as a few tears fell. You got your own back though; you ordered the 3 most expensive meals on the menu, asked the waiter to tell him he can pay for it out of his winnings and walked out leaving him to pay.

"It's nearly 11pm, why would you want to walk home on your own?" Your mum frowns, you shrug your shoulders.

"It's quiet. I like it," You whisper before taking your keys out of your pocket.

"Well, go get something warmer on and come down and talk to Calum, he's been away for a while I'm sure he'd love to tell you some stories."

"Yeah, I'd love to," Calum smiles looking at you.

"Maybe another time," You say before walking towards the door and slamming it shut before falling down it slightly and covering your mouth as the tears fell.

Tears had fallen every now again, even on your way home a kind woman with a pram had asked you if you were okay and needed to use her phone to call someone. You had declined and told her it was just a rough night and you were nearly home anyway - you weren't.

You slipped the heels off of your feet as you held them in your hands and walked up the stairs at a slow pace.

"That was rude," Your mum says walking into the house, you turned to look at her and she froze.

"Honey? What happened?" She asks walking closer to the rail of the stairs - knowing all too well you wouldn't tell if she got too close.

"I was a bet," You say simply.

"A bet?"

"They know I love someone I can never have and bet to see if I would say yes."

"You didn't say yes, Jess did."

"He still wins though, I went on the date," You say.

"I'm sorry," She says, "Who is this someone you love that you can't have?"

"I'm going to bed," You say walking up the stairs and throwing your shoes onto your bedroom floor. You turned on your fairy lights - eyes too sore from crying to turn on the bedroom light - and start to get dressed into something that didn't cling to your skin like cling film.

The pro of your house was the flat roof that over looked your garden and the tree house you and Calum used to play in, it always made memories of him so fresh that you found yourself just staring sometimes, trying to remind yourself of the times when you didn't long for something so far away.

"Come here often?" A voice snaps you out of your day dream; your head turns to see Calum climbing across the tiny gap between your houses.

"Sometimes," You say.

"Same, not so much lately, but sometimes," He laughs; you nod your head at him and look back at the tree house.

"Remember when I almost fell out?" He asks.

"I had to grab your foot," You answer.

"You were strong."

"I had to be, we used to fight a lot," You smile.

"I have some things for you," He tells me.

"Where from?"

"Everywhere. I got you a present from every place I was in."

"You didn't have to do that."

"Well, we promised we'd go everywhere together and now I've done it and I want to share some of the memories with you."

"That's generous," You say.

"I did fight for you to come with me on the tour, as my babysitter but Ashton wanted to be with his girlfriend so I let him and I said next time it's my turn."

"You didn't have to do that."

"It's better than being apart, you're my best friend."

"And you're mine," You say ignoring the pain in your chest.

"So you went on a date?" He asks.

"Yep, I did."

"What was it like? You haven't been on a date since that awkward blind date with Luke 3 years ago," He laughs.

"Luke's date went better."

"Really? He dropped food down himself and you!" He laughs.

"At least he made me laugh."

"What happened?"

"I was a bet," You say.

"What?" Calum asks leaning up and looking at you seriously.

"They know I love someone I can never have and bet to see if I would say yes."

"You love someone else?" He whispers looking at you, his facial expression falling.

"Yeah I guess."

"Who is it? Who is the idiot?" He asks, you look down and contemplate before taking a deep breath and looking him in the eyes.

"You."
