summary: you and your best friend calum always spend christmas together.

Everything was ready for you and Calum. Two steaming mugs of hot chocolate were placed on the coffee table, the yule log channel was playing on the television, you turned on some jazzy holiday music, and your presents for your best friend were wrapped neatly and waiting underneath the tree. You were walking around the house in your most festive holiday pajamas, excited for you and Calum's eighth Christmas together.

You couldn't help but squeal when you heard a familiar rhythmic knock at your front door.

You opened the door, revealing a bundled-up Calum, hands filled with three poorly-wrapped gifts with your name written on each one. A beaming grin was plastered on his face the moment he laid eyes on you. "Merry Christmas!" Calum cheered, stepping inside your house.

You closed and locked the door behind him, immediately wrapping your arms around your best friend in a bone-crushing hug. "Merry Christmas," you mumbled back, lips curving into a smile as you inhaled a sugary sweet scent. "Did you bring cookies?"

"They're from my mum," Calum informed, nudging you with a large tupperware. "Snickerdoodles."

"Excellent," you responded, pulling back and taking the box from his hands. Every year, Joy made you the best batch of cookies you've ever had the privilege of consuming. If you were completely honest, that was one of your favorite parts of Christmas- the other part was spending it with Calum.

The two of you settled on the couch, Calum making himself at home with the knit blanket you draped over the armrest. You reached underneath the tree, scooping up the pristinely-wrapped gifts marked Cal. Calum let out a chuckle the moment he saw them.

"Yeah, I'm not much of a wrapper," He defended, gaze shifting down to the square-shaped gift he had for you. "Mali already gave me shit for that. Speaking of, this is from her." Calum slid a Starbucks gift card towards you.

"I love your family," you murmured, smile growing as you set it down on the coffee table, picking up your mug of hot chocolate. "Open your gifts!" You then prodded, nearly bouncing with excitement.

Calum hesitated for a moment, before shaking his head. "I think you should go first."

Your eyebrows furrowed as you took a sip of your hot chocolate, setting the mug back down on the table carefully. Without another word, you picked up the box with your name on it, an envelope taped to the front.

"Read that first," Calum hinted, his voice cautious.

Complying, you tugged the envelope apart from the gift and gently ripped it open, revealing a simple, yet adorable card. You opened the card, finding that the inside was filled with Calum's tiny writing.

Y/N,

There's no easy way to say this, considering the fact that we've been best friends since grade school. To clarify, no, I am not dying. I'm very much alive, so don't freak out.

You sighed in relief, and continued reading.

To this day, I remain convinced that the universe put us together for a reason. You're the most caring, gentle, and gorgeous soul that has ever graced my life. You steal the breath from my lungs each time I see you. Every room you walk into is filled with so much love and brightness. Before I met you that first day of grade school, I didn't know life could be filled with such vibrant color, and so much happiness. You exposed me to a whole new world. I don't want to know a world without Y/N.

I am overwhelmingly, completely, unconditionally in love with you. I fall deeper in love with you each day. You fill my thoughts and dreams every second of the day, and being able to be a part of the journey you call life is enough to make me feel complete. Even if the feeling isn't mutual, you will always be my best friend, my soulmate, and the absolute love of my life.

Love always, your Calum.

You hadn't noticed tears had welled up in your eyes the moment you reached the end of the card. Your breathing was shaky, eyes widened with shock as you reread each line over and over. After what felt like an eternity, your gaze shifted up to Calum. His eyes were clouded with anxiety, his lower lip pinched between his teeth as he scanned your face for a reaction.

"Calum," you stammered out, setting the card down.

"Surprise," Calum whispered, a worried smile twitching on his lips.

The room went silent. Your mind was racing.

Without another thought, you moved across the couch, cupping his cheeks in your hands. Your lips pressed gently to his, eyelids fluttering shut. Calum froze with surprise, but quickly came back to his senses, letting his hands rest on top of yours. The kiss was shy, but filled with years of built-up passion. It just felt so right.

Your lips parted moments later, his breath warm and heavy.

"I love you, too," you sighed in content, the biggest grin forming on your face. "Holy fuck, Calum, I love you."

"I love you," Calum repeated, his face mimicking your grin. Your lips met once more, your heart swelling with warmth in your chest. "Open the gift now," he breathed out.

You moved back in your spot, picking up the square-shaped box and ripping off the wrapping paper. Inside was a mixtape, labelled the things I never had the guts to tell you.

"I was told handmade things held more sentimental value," Calum explained, his cheeks tinging pink with blush.

"You made me a mixtape," you cooed, flipping it over and reading the tracks. "Calum, I love it."

"Had a feeling you would," he admitted.

You set down the gift, giving him an appreciative peck on the cheek. "Mine are kind of lame. I don't think I can top yours."

"You know what the best gift you would be able to give me is?" Calum questioned, his eyes looking straight into yours. "Be mine."

"All yours," You grinned, leaning into his side as he threw his arm around you. "I'm all yours."
